Going back a couple of pages but I think Pinocchio is very good, but I always thought it was pretty dark too, haven't seen it in a while though :p
Secondly, Waltz with Bashir looks awesome, all you guys posting all these great ratings and images make it look great, looking forward to watching that eventually.

Why so harsh on Scream 3? :( What do you rate the second and fourth films?
Why so harsh on Scream 3? :( What do you rate the second and fourth films?
I'm a big Scream fan, I love all three of the other films. Scream 2 is probably a rating_3_5+ if not a four, while Scream 4 gets a rating_4. It might seem like a high rating for four, but I have good memories associated with it.
My rating for Scream 3 might seem harsh but I really didn't like it. I don't blame Wes Craven though, I blame Ehren Kruger. It's his mess - he is a terrible writer. He didn't understand the world of Scream and the "Scream style" and a lot of what he writes is just stupid (the way they bring Sidney back into the picture is pretty dumb, for example - the killer calls her and threatens her, so she goes to Hollywood, where the killer is, because there's 'no point in trying to get away from him' :p). There is a MASSIVE difference between it and the other three in that Kevin Williamson wrote those and Kruger wrote this one (okay, Kruger did some rewrites on Scream 4, and I guess the things he changed was stupid based on what Sexy told me, but Craven says it's still Williamson's script). I also hated that it took place in Hollywood and not Westboro.
That might not be a good enough explanation for you or Cobpyth, but I don't care. I go by my gut. :D

Quite a few to update. This is from the last couple of weeks.
I basically embarked on two actor-oriented "seasons" of movies: Robin Williams, then Audrey Hepburn - sparked by a viewing of the wonderful Roman Holiday. Plus a few others.

August, 2014 movies watched-50
His Girl Friday (1940) 3 I'm a big fan of Cary Grant; he made this movie for me
Lucy (2014) 2.5 Decent to watch once, but very forgettable
The Purge: Anarchy (2014) 3 Plenty of fun if you like action and violence
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQecm9ho6zg2YEvTF9_VLSh1mTit1lpxsSQ-JEKk6NbNdXF37mivQzOeMI

Sharknado 2 (2014) 2 A bit entertaining and I liked the cameos
Klute (1971) 2.5 I liked the ingredients, but the final product was just ok for me
The Exterminating Angel (1962) 2.5 This somehow kept me interested. I like this director
Doctor Zhivago (1965) 2 Too long for never caring about the story. Great to look at, but a very tough watch
Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) 2 A good experimental film is what I would call it
Ebola Syndrome (1996) 3 Pretty sick, but very entertaining
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTI3G2hG9Nz_vrNaN33O2-tM6CHmvyV5qCipV-4v4nZ51a2qbNI0AUn7qhB
August Underground (2001) 1.5 Extremely vile; this movie looks real, like a snuff film
Femme Fatale (2002) 2.5 Rebbeca Romijn's acting, and a lack of tension were negatives, but I was entertained
Onibaba (1964) 5 Creepy, vicious, and brilliant
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRLuPdupBJzz59S19QeDwRDHDtGMRn_Lnd_PCF20lnYoCSsp-Qx-43KL19r

The Turin Horse (2011) 1.5 Excruciating to watch for this viewer
Out of the Furnace (2013) 3.5 It didn't have the wow moment I needed to make it great, *but this is a very strong all around film with a great cast

Breathless (1960) 1.5 I didn't really like anything about this and I thought the main character was lame
L'Avventura (1960) 2.5 Continues a pattern this month of solid 60's classics that I'm fairly indifferent to
The Children's Hour (1961) 4 Intense and emotional domestic drama with a story that's ahead of it's time
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRVM9rccz5E4sU04bkK9ejjjfANoQ88KHQhlY4bNzE-g0i96u5NHQVTco7r

I could never catch up to Mark, or other members on this site.
I'm still unsure how to rate a lot of movies. I adjust many by a half popcorn at the end of the month when I do my full month tally. I try to compare them all to each other to keep perspective.

It's very good. It's also more or less a silent film, which is very effective. There's only a tiny bit of spoken parts and they're only incidental.

Glad you liked Ernest and Celestine, Miss Vicky. Thought you would.
It was excellent, although I couldn't help but notice a minor problem with the plot - Mice wouldn't need dentists. Like, pretty much ever. It's extremely rare for a rodent to lose a tooth because their incisors grow throughout their lives and so are impervious to decay.
Still, it was really funny and very touching. Definitely a possibility for my ballot and I hope it gets a good place on the countdown.
Hmmm, I didn't know that. That's kind of passable considering the sort of film this is though. I mean, mice can't talk either, you know?

Romancing the Stone 3.5 a fun movie that is a good addition to my filmography that I have watched from Zemeckis
Ace in the Hole 4 Wilder doesn't make anything that disappoints me. I would consider this tier 2 Wilder, but still was good.
Big Trouble in Little China 3.5 My third Carpenter, and least favorite, but it was still a fun watch.
The Avengers (rewatch) 4.5 the definition of a fun watch for me. Really amped up for the next one next year.
Thor (rewatch) 3.5+ I think it is better than what people say it is! could be me though.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (rewatch) 2.5 a blast from the past. Made me feel like a child.
eXistenZ (1999) - David Cronenburg
OK. I'm not a big fan of Cronenburg, with the exception of The Fly, but I still found this to be one of his weaker films. rating_2_5
A River Runs Through It (1992) - Robert Redford
Looked nice and the fly fishing/life metaphor is a good one but having Craig Sheffer play the lead role was a big mistake. Just made the whole thing feel kind of bland.
rating_2_5+
Deep Red (1975) - Dario Argento
Generally not a fan of Argento but this is one of his better films. rating_3+
Loving Memory (1971) - Tony Scott
Surprisingly good debut from Scott. rating_4
Boyhood (2014) - Richard Linklater
Two amazing films in a row from Linklater. IMO he is currently the leading American filmmaker. rating_5
Tenebre (1982) - Dario Argento
Atmosphere is good but Argento needed to put some effort into things like script & acting. rating_2+
Brokeback Mountain (2005) - Ang Lee
I really like that Lee focussed on this being a romance. rating_4
Comanche (1956) - George Sherman
Dana Andrews was alright ... everything else was bad. rating_2+
Paris Je T'aime (2006) - Craven/Coen/Chadha/Natali/Assayas/Van Sant/Cuaron/Tykwer/etc.
I tend to like the concept more than the execution with these compilation movies but this one was of a higher quality than most. rating_4
Un Chien Andalou (1960) - Luis Bunuel
I like Bunuel a lot but whilst I enjoyed this, I didn't love it. rating_3
High Note (1960) - Chuck Jones
Interesting but, strangely, felt too long. rating_2_5
Tango (1981) - Zbigniew Rybczynski
Probably the best 8 minute movie I'll ever see. rating_4

Tenebre (1982) - Dario Argento
Atmosphere is good but Argento needed to put some effort into things like script & acting. Demanding good script and acting from a giallo is like demanding kissing from a b*tch. Some do, but you can enjoy 'em without it.

Sure, if you can forgive their flaws then they are great.
That same argument can be used for any movie. Sure, Adam Sandler movies have terrible acting and scripts but their kind-hearted feel makes them enjoyable. Well, not to me but if it works for someone else then that's great ;)

Punch-Drunk Love 1.5+ The latest in my "Films I didn't want to watch/see/wasn't interested in but it was on and so decided to try it" season (recording The Wild Bunch atm, which is another I've never liked. Sorry, HP.) I didn't really have any preconceptions going in other than I wouldn't enjoy it. However, when I was watching it I found myself thinking that I thought it'd be a bit more annoying. So I guess I did have some somewhere. So, while not as annoying (though definitely annoying) as I thought it'd be, I'm afraid I found it really boring. I really wasn't interested at all and couldn't/didn't engage with it. It felt conspicuously 'quirky' (is PTA someone who describes himself as "wacky" or "zany" because I had that feeling) but the main problem was boredom. Twice in this film Adam Sandler says the line "This is funny." Now, you know what I thought and so did I, and, the first time, sure enough I said "I wish". But the second time, I was so bored I couldn't even say it. An obvious, terrible joke at the expense of something I wasn't enjoying and I didn't have it in me to make it. That's how bored I was watching this.
But, for some reason, I did like the scene when Sandler goes to Utah to face PSH in his shop. It was a good scene and, literally, the only thing I liked about the film. That was the best thing about the film. The worst? The score. I don't think I'd have found it half as annoying if it weren't for that.
The Man In The White Suit 2 - Is satire always "biting" or "cutting"? Because this didn't seem harsh enough on its targets to be concided either, though that's how I hear it described in listings and things. Maybe it's just lazy journalistm. Anyway, this is actually a very gentle satire. Cuddly, even, if it's possible for a satire to be so. It's a well made film. Well acted and the rest of it but, as with most comedies, I don't find it funny. True, but not funny. My favourite bit was the sound of his experiment and that the subtitles had the words "beep" and "boop" to describe it and alternated between the two, one slightly to the left of the screen, the other to the right.
Heli 2 - Do you like Mexican films about corruption, crime and poverty? If you do, take a look at this. You'll probably really like it. Me? 20 years ago I'd have eaten this up and felt well sated. Maybe even two popcorns more. But now? If you're going to have me watch this, make it interesting. Give me characters and don't just give me long takes in long shot of scrubland with a single entity moving (be it a vehicle or a person) from one side to the other or from top to bottom. Or, if you do, make it somewhere pretty.
The opening shot of this film reminded me a little of De Palma, as it felt like a director leaving his calling card. Thankfully, it was the only time it felt like that.

I've read somewhere that Pain and Gain was Michael Bay's Citizen Kane I wouldn't go that far, but it sure is not a mindless full of explosions action movies. I liked the ending it was pretty funny, I had very few laughs, but at least, after watching the 129 minutes film I didn't thought I lost my time and find the movie to not be so bad

Maybe I am a snob, but that movie is just perfect to me I love every single bit of it, I love to hear those university teacher speaking to each other it shows prefectly a certain period of society people that are centered on themselves very narcicistic and centered more on their little individual person and the oh so complex mask that they were for society that actually being themselves, there are some very intelligent symbolism that makes you able to watch it on numerous occasions. I'd also auggest The barbarian Invasions which is the sequel that is just as good.

Nymphomaniac: Volume 1 (2011,Von Trier)

Nymphomaniac tells the story of the early phases of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg, who Lars Von Trier loves) life as a sex addict. Often disgusting, but occasionally erotic (rarely), Lars Von Trier creates a unique film. He uses a more artistic Brian De Palma style of direction, incorporating split screens, text on screen, ect. Von Trier's other films are also highly sexual, but if the actors in this film were just a bit darker I would think Almodovar was behind the camera. The narration plus the pulling of outside materials (maps, film) gives the metaphors some educational value, kind of like Joe's father gave her. The most powerful, perhaps the only powerful, scene is the dinner confrontation, very uncomfortable narcissistic moment. Well designed, and memorable I'll be sure to give part II a watch soon.

I disliked both parts of Nymphomaniac as well. The Wild Bunch 2+ Another of my "Films I didn't want to watch/see/wasn't interested in but it was on and so decided to try it" season. Now, I know looking at that rating you're going to think I hated it, but I didn't. In fact, I've never enjoyed watching this film as much as I did this time around. I can't quite go upto 2.5 because I still really don't like the stuff with the General and in the village, which is a decent chunk of the film. However, I didn't ff through any of it or even want to and that's a big improvement on any other viewings of it. It's a Western, so I don't like the look of it and it's set in and around Mexico, so I hate all the music that tells us where we are, but the rest? The rest I quite liked.
Night Of The Creeps 2 - Horror comedy is rarely my thing because there's not enough/any horror. If they're not trying to scare you then it ain't horror as far as I'm concerned and I didn't feel they were trying. It's not bad, I can see why it's so beloved by so many (especially anyone who saw it back when it was made) but it all feels a little too stale for me. I'd like to see it again, though and I did like the last 20 minutes or so.
Solaris (2002) 2 - I'm not quite sure how to rate this one because I don't really feel anything about it. I didn't like it. I didn't enjoy it. It looked OK and the acting was all right. That said, I wish someone would tell these people that whispering and acting well aren't the same thing. There's just nothing for me to care about here. None of this means that I disliked it. It's just a void. I watched it just over 24 hours ago and, already, I don't really remember it.

3 for Lifeboat? I demand an explanation! :tsk: I'm not even going to start with The Wrong Man rating... And it being higher!
They're both fascinating to watch from a directorial view point, but my ratings reflect how good I actually think they are, and Lifeboat isn't one of Hitchcock's great for me. He does a great job of building up characters and suspense, making use of limited location and objects, but I think the film loses a little steam once when Willy the German takes over the boat, and it gets a little rushed and messy at the end.
And The Wrong Man is higher, because it's better ;) Great atmosphere and music, and fantastic direction/editing to really get into the character of Henry Fonda and his wife, every scene works well and makes such a bizarre story so compelling.

I just looked at that review and it looks like Godard was the kind of critic who was more interested in shot-for-shot analysis (and drawing comparisons to the works of other auteurs) rather than commenting on the qualities of the film itself.
He sounded like he explained the story in at least 70% of that review. I tried to read it, but had to stop since I've not seen the film yet and it basically describes most of the plot

Fritz the Cat So boring I couldn't finish it. A new member of my top 10 worst movie of all time.
Dancer in The Dark Pretty good, it was my second Von Trier, I had some problem with it mostly regarding the stupidity of Selma and how this whole thing was just for 2000$, but the ending is riveting and touched. a very very very emotionally strong ending.
The Barbarian Invasions It was a second viewing, it's the sequel of The Decline of the American Empire and it's just as good if not better. I watched A Woman is a Woman a few days ago too, Sane and I'm giving it 4! I love the very ending, in which Anna Karina blinks to the camera! (hope it's not too much of a spoiler xD). Mother Joan of the Angels is a great Kawalerowicz film. Check out Poci±g (Train) as well!

But that's what you said youself. :)
When you posted two posts one after another with so many films it wouldn't be technically possible to watch 'em in 24 hours you said that you post these films with a lag, because you limit yourself to 20 films per post. I know of your condition and that you watch enormous number of films and your latest posts may be all up-to-date, but that's what I remember from about one year ago.
The backlog was a day or two when I said that. Right now, the backlog is four movies. I post 20 at a time because I watch so many and I'm used to my current format. I guess I could post them in the Last Movie You've Seen thread and get 100 + reps instead of 10 in here. Does anybody really care?

I'm mostly old school when it comes to TV. I watch most of it when it's on. Ever since college days started (that's 41 years ago), I've preferred crap movies to TV shows. I know the best ones today are movie-quality, but I'm not that interested. I am participating in the TV countdown because I have seen some great ones but they're old and many younger MoFos probably haven't experienced them. Every one I show to my daughter she loves though. :)

How come you disliked it that much?
You know, my first thought was that the sentimentality and didactic structure were completely dumb and lazy. And they are. The cliche where someone commits some fraud but makes good by learning/teaching a valuable lesson about honesty and being yourself seems to be a prerequisite in paint-by-numbers affairs like this, as opposed to the sort of well-meaning rebellion they preach. It's so common it's not even interesting or provocative to point out the irony anymore. (Cue some self-styled voice of reason to point out that "avant garde" cinema has its own set of cliches and ironies, its own didactic fixations, thereby neatly changing the subject.)
But I have a more fundamental and personal issue with School of Rock; which is that even if I played along and accepted the message of "rock", pretended to care about the characters, to the extent that it's tempered by the legitimate concerns of "school" (The stuffed-shirt administrator is sympathetic too!) it just makes the comedy kind of bland and wishy-washy. I say that's a more personal complaint because I'm at least self-aware enough to recognize that I often find my sense of humor in conflict with my desire for nuance. I don't experience too much cognitive dissonance when rating Tenacious D higher even though it's just as stupid and has even less of a point, though. In terms of comedy, I simply prefer and find funnier non-sympathetic caricatures and their nonsensical worldviews to ones who are humanized via formulaic sentimentality. In that sense "sympathy" is a dirty word to me, but that's okay because I'm "being myself"; now if only I could learn that important life lesson about caring, I'd be able to appreciate pablum like School of Rock.

Frank is all about celebrating eccentricity over sanity. There really is no digging behind the characters and their illnesses, but the line between "normal" and "weird" is basically shown to be nonexistent except for how one copes with society. But I'm making the film sound too serious. The music is often enjoyable, although that's probably not the right word, and the performances are quite good. I would call it light-hearted whimsy which is often amusing but ultimately only hints at the despair underneath. I find it does just enough to be a worthwhile way to pass 90 minutes, but I can understand why others would love it or hate it. And no, I knew nothing of the real Frank beforehand, although the film incorporates the lives of Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart into the character, and I'm very familiar with them.

One,Two Three (1961) - Billy Wilder
My least favourite Wilder film but still decent. Comedy is a very subjective thing and too much of it didn't really work for me. rating_3+

Was this the full second season of the mini-series? I've never been sure about watching it but now I might. Did you rate the first season as high?

Trans-Europ-Express is wildly cool! How many other films from the director have you seen?
Was this the full second season of the mini-series? I've never been sure about watching it but now I might. Did you rate the first season as high?
Yes, this was the 4 3/4-hour "second season" which came three years after the "first season" ended. The cast is intact and it picks up exactly where the first one ended, which may have been the highlight of the entire thing. Both mini-series were released in the U.S. as movies, and my brother was one of the few to actually view it in the theatre both times. I also give the first Kingdom 3.5.
Trans-Europ-Express is wildly cool! How many other films from the director have you seen?
The director/screenwriter is the same guy who wrote Last Year at Marienbad. This was the first of his directorial efforts I've seen, but MUBI has L'Immortelle available now, and they're going to have some others very soon (in a week or so).
Mr Minio
09-19-14, 02:18 PM
L'Immortelle has incredible cinematography, but it's 'only' good. Slidings of Pleasure is my favourite, but Eden is freakin' cool too.
Why haven't I seen any Robbe-Grillet film yet? I'll have Trans-Europ-Express, L'immortelle and The Man Who Lies all lined up to watch. Thanks for reminding me indirectly.

Yeah, the film definitely isn't for everyone...but a 0 is just wrong. It means the film is void of any artistic merit whatsoever. That's just my opinion though.

I didn't rate a single movie rating_0. The sheer fact somebody actually made an effort of making a film deserves a rating_0_5. To rate zero popcorns films like Hausu or Werckmeister Harmonies is simply to be ignorant.
Yeah, I don't think so. A 0 is as relevant as a 5 I am not rating effort, I am rating my enjoyment. Granted I don't give out a lot of 0 because of the simple fact that usually I would not make it to the end of a movie that I am not enjoying on any level. It is a MOVIE rating, no extra points just because it was made. That's just ignorant.

Really? Your comments show that you approach films with a "here we are now, entertain us" mindset which simply doesn't fit with watching arthouse films all the time. Films like Tarr's require you to invest in them and to think about the images and the themes being presented.
Of course there is no requirement for anyone to actually do that which is why it seems like a waste of time to watch them if your approach simply won't allow you to enjoy them.
Which arthouse films have you seen and enjoyed?

What do you consider arthouse?Tarr, Angelopoulos, Haneke, Kiarostami, Weerasekathul, Greenaway, etc. Lots of people seem to class anything "foreign" as arthouse which seems weird to me. For example, whilst Kurosawa may have made an arthouse film at some stage, he was not an arthouse director IMO - in fact most of the great Japanese directors weren't.

The Party (1968) - Blake Edwards
An old favourite but watching it now I found a lot of it kind of annoying. Still, enough fun scenes to make it worthwhile rating_3
Rocky II (1979) - Sylvester Stallone
Basically a remake with a worse director. rating_2_5
The Swindle (1955) - Federico Fellini
Pretty conventional compared to his later films. A good con man movie. rating_3_5

Mostly up to Allen's usual standards ... except the songs were pretty badly performed. rating_3
Peter Pan (1953) - Clyde Geronimi/Wilfred Jackson/Hamilton Luske
Unlike 101 Dalmatians I've never been a fan of this story. It was decent though I guess. rating_3-
Old is the New (2012) - Dario & Mirko Bischofberger
Interesting idea about a Chinese tourism consultant in a small Italian town looking for stuff that may be of interest to tourists. Beyond the concept it's a bit of a mess though unfortunately. rating_2_5-
I Will Buy You (1956) - Masaki Kobayashi
A cynical look at the business behind recruiting in Japanese baseball. Decent enough but not up to the standards of Kobayashi's later work. rating_3+
The Crucified Lovers (1954) - Kenji Mizoguchi
Very good Japanese forbidden love story. Mizoguchi reigns in the melodrama a bit and it works well - still a very dramatic movie but doesn't go overboard. Beautiful ending. rating_4+

Shakespeare in Love- 3 Nothing that really should have been oscar worthy. I thought Paltrows performance was good, but Dench's acting is limited and even then overrated in itself.
Chinatown-4.5+ REWATCH my third watch and it has gotten better each and every time.
Charlotte's Web- 4 very entertaining, a great child film that is even great for a big kid like me. Such a true story of friendship trust and loyalty. The characters in it were very memorable for me. I can remember seeing this as a child now actually and it's a shame it took me so long to get back to it.
Iron Man- 4.5+ REWATCH it's definitely my favorite Marvel film of all-time, and if like them all. Simply put, Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man.
My Neighbor Totoro- 4+ This is Miyazaki in prime form. Could easily go higher upon a rewatch, but it left a great impression on me. Something about his films are just magical and touching to me.
Signs- 4.5 REWATCH this movie is everything I want a horror to be. The atmosphere of the film works as good as any film I've seen.
The Hunger Games- 3 An entertaining flick due to J Law. Without her I fear this franchise would be a mess.
Breakfast at Tiffany's- 4- while it was really good, something held it from being great for me. Still liked it mostly due to Hepburn.
I'll admit the rating seems extreme, but if he doesn't like it, he's going to rate it low. What I would be more interested in seeing are any other well-received films which Loner rates 0-1/5.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on Bernie, Mark. I wouldn't necessarily say I disagree with your rating, I thought it was a very strange film, a fascinating blend of actingand documentary that I wasn't sure what emotions I was supposed to show towards. Jack Black is great though.
I enjoyed Bernie quite a bit. I think I ranked it about a star higher than Mark, which means we enjoyed it about the same I think.:D I thought the characters were great and the narrative was very engaging. IMDB pissed me off because they gave away the big moment in their plot synopsis. I noticed they have changed it since. Not my favorite Linklater but certainly a good one.
I've actually seen the Loner list, the full list. It was pretty good. Think I lost it, though. Damn inbox limits.
Me too! Doesn't matter, it's probably changed
Mkay, I see I cannot neither convince you, or get any other reason than boredom from you.

I really don't know what to say about Bernie. It's modestly entertaining, amusing in its use of townsfolk "interviews" to reveal the appearance of Bernie's life, very awkward in the depiction of the shooting and trial and Bernie's reaction to it all. I know Bernie is out now, basically in the custody of Linklater, so I guess what I see as awkwardness in the film may also be seen as awkwardness in the justice system dealing with this case. Black is good, but I'm still not sure who Bernie is and why he does anything that he does, so in that way it is more like a doc with a subject who's not especially forthcoming.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic JayDee, but I think he's probably referring to the '46 version.
Now I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. :p Surely you don't think I actually believed it was the Disney version he was talking about. Just how daft do you think I am? I mean give me a little credit. :D

Breakfast at Tiffany's (Blake Edwards, 1961): Good movie, but definitely a bit of a letdown considering how much I was looking forward to seeing it. Chemistry between two leads is an essential component in films of this type, and Hepburn and Peppard share very little. For example, the early scene when he's shirtless in bed and she lays beside him should be rife with sexual tension, but instead it's a limp d!ck of a scene. Peppard is incredibly bland and keeps the film from reaching its potential, so I never bought into the love story. However, the stunningly gorgeous Hepburn is fantastic. She's the reason this film is so iconic. I also loved the "Moon River" song that's used throughout the film and I thought the ending with the cat and the rain was a powerful scene. The dialogue is great. I can definitely see why Rooney's Asian character offends so many viewers, but misguided or not, I thought he was funny and there's no denying that he fully commits to the role. His character still stands out like a sore thumb, however. A good movie, albeit very flawed; maybe it will grow on me with subsequent viewings. 3
http://freebeacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Bad-Words-screenshot.jpg
Bad Words (Jason Bateman, 2014): I like humor that isn't afraid to offend, and that's the forte of Bad Words. Bateman's direction is pedestrian at best, and I'm not sure if he was the best choice for the lead role. I enjoy his dry delivery, but he's much better at playing the affable everyman than a borderline sociopath. The best scenes feature him and the little kid he nicknames Slumdog as they indulge in various vices. The ending is overwrought and the forced sentimentality involving Bateman's backstory is completely unnecessary, but there are enough laughs to make this a decent comedy. 2.5
http://www.filmlinc.com/assets/uploads/films/a-touch-of-sin-3.jpg
A Touch of Sin (Jia Zhangke, 2013): Films that string together several loosely connected stories tend to either hit you over the head with THEME (Crash into me) or the narrative pulls away just as your interest peaks. The former isn't a problem with A Touch of Sin, but certainly the latter, which kept me from loving this film as much as it probably deserves. The four segments are apparently based on true events in China. I imagine there's also quite a bit of political subtext that wouldn't go over so well in China, making this a rather bold film in that regard. A Touch of Sin is expertly directed, features some great performances, beautiful cinematography, and some of the most effective uses of violence I've seen in a while. The first segment is by far the best and the most compelling. If the other three segments had been as strong, my rating would be much higher. 3
http://g2g.fm/uploads/screenshots/Devils-Knot-Screenshot-1-G2G.FM.jpg
Devil's Knot (Atom Egoyan, 2014): I was a bit familiar with the real-life case of the West Memphis Three, mainly because of Johnny Depp's involvement. Some of the courtroom scenes in this film are compelling, but overall it feels too much like a made-for-TV movie. Lackluster direction, southern caricatures, unfocused narrative and I'm-just-here-to-collect-a-paycheck performances. The film also relies too much on text to relay information to the viewer. 2
http://thehipsterfiles.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/upstream-color-screen-shot-1.jpg
Upstream Color (Shane Carruth, 2013): I like weird films that unfold like a puzzle and demand your attention. Upstream Color is that type of film, but for some reason it just didn't work for me. I had the same problem with Carruth's previous film Primer. The latter has developed a cult following and is infamous for its complicated time-traveling plot, but I was too disinterested in its delivery to bother paying close attention. Upstream Color is nowhere near as confusing and the premise is very original, plus it features some stunning imagery, but the flat characterization and fragmented narrative failed to engage me as a viewer. 2
http://www.ruthlessreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/rage_da_da_dum.jpg
Rage (Paco Cabezas, 2014): One of the worst Nicholas Cage movies I've seen, and that's saying something, given how many bad films he's been in over the years. Dour, depressing, dull, and devoid of thrills or excitement. Even in bad films, I enjoy watching The Cage do his thing, but this poorly directed, by-the-numbers thriller doesn't even give him the opportunity to overact; instead he just scowls for the majority of the film. Rage might also contain the most incompetent police force I've ever seen. An early contender for worst film of 2014. 1.5

Sorry, MV.
Also, watch the documentaries for the West Memphis Three. It's really well known now, and there's been a result, but Paradise Lost is still the most WTF moment I've ever had watching a documentary. I was, literally, agog.

Way too much opera-type singing plus it's about 20-25 minutes longer than their Paramount classics (this is their first with MGM). The stateroom scene and the finale are fun, but I decided to drop it from 2.5.

Thanks. Looked at the release date and it seemed about 5 years too early because I saw it at the movies. However, looking at the plot summary it looks right - I guess New Zealand was just five years behind the rest of the world ... again ;)
If NZ was like the US, it could have been a rerelease second feature to a new(er) release, such as Living Free. I used to watch older Disney movies when a new one came out.

It just really worked for me, I found it pretty enjoyable overall and I dig this kind of humor. Perhaps it could have been half an hour shorter, but that's the only flaw that I can think of, really. It often happens to me with westerns that I fail to connect with the characters, but that wasn't the case with this one. The film is slow-paced but I never found it tedious or uninteresting, + it's effortlessly cool.
Sometimes maybe some modest, old-fashioned entertainment is all you need.

I don't often agree with Quentin Tarantino, but he pretty reasonably called Rio Bravo the greatest hang out movie of all time, and I think that's directly related to its length. It wouldn't be nearly as laid back if it was shorter

The best part of the saga of Tom Cruise's hotshot navy pilot are the well-staged and photographed aerial scenes.
Yep, that's a 3/5 from mark for Top Gun.
TOP GUN BABY!!!!
I'll admit the rating seems extreme, but if he doesn't like it, he's going to rate it low. What I would be more interested in seeing are any other well-received films which Loner rates 0-1/5.
I'm sure it will happen again. Probably today.

QT has also said that uses Rio Bravo as a litmus test for dates. If she doesn't like the movie, then the relationship probably isn't going to succeed. Sounds like QT and Mark F won't be getting married anytime soon.
Personally, I love Rio Bravo. One of the greatest hang-out movies and one of the greatest westerns. It's easily my favorite John Wayne movie. The scene where Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson sing "My Rifle, My Pony & Me" is one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema.
I hereby support the love for Rio Bravo. Great movie.
Where did I say that I don't like the movie? I just don't understand its cult that has grown during my lifetime. If someone told me that youth would think a movie with John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson hangin' out would be supercool, I would think they're crazy.

On the other hand, I can think of plenty of reasons for Ghost in the Shell to be the lowest rated of all those movies.
Mysterious Skin (Greg Araki, 2004) - 5
Traumatizing.

Detailed private parts? Nope. Cyborgs are asexual!
I haven't watched "Ghost in the Shell" in a long time but I remember really liking it.
