It's finally time. Science Fiction is probably the most expansive and unique film genres ever, and I had a blast going through and counting all of the unique lists that were sent in. The final list has a large array of movies from dozens of different sub-genres. Comedy, horror, action, drama, romance, thriller, fantasy, mystery, adventure, and crime are just some of the things that can all be accessed through Sci-Fi. Before we get to the actual list, let's start off with some details.

64 Lists were submitted

360 Total films were entered

18 Ties were broken

-I will reveal 2 film each day. When I get to the Final 50, we will have a brief intermission and I will reveal the one pointers. After I get to the top ten, I will have a prediction game, and will start revealing only one each day.

-Please do not reveal your entire list until the countdown is over (you may however reveal a film on your list once it is announced).

-Huge thanks to everyone who sent in a list (posted here (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1589981#post1589981)).

Looking forward to the list Nope, and the eventual crowning of 2001.

Top ten in no particular order: 2001, Alien, New Hope, Blade Runner, Back To The Future, The Thing, Solaris, Empire Strikes Back, Children Of Men, Jurassic Park.

* That's a prediction ( I didn't submit a list)

The Stats

Looper
https://www.movieforums.com/images/lists/scifi/oscars6.gif
The first film to crack the list is a fairly recent one. Looper floated around the 100 to 150 spot until it finally rested at #100. The film was tied with one other film that also received 49 points, but it was only featured on 2 lists.

Layout: 3rd, 13th, 16th, 24th, 25th

Dune
https://www.movieforums.com/images/lists/scifi/on8mEzz.gif
Nothing too special about this one. It was tied with another (#98) film that also had 51 Points and 3 lists, but the other film was placed higher on a list the this one, so Dune lost the tie breaker.

Layout: 4th, 8th, 15th

I actually kind of like Dune. It was nowhere near being on my list though haha.

I agree on Looper. I just thought it was fine, and sort of keep forgetting it even exists since it didn't leave much of an impression.

Co-signed. Nice, bold, big black fonts with a nicely balanced photo-layout as well... Simple, clean, clear and full on contrast. I dig it!

Good job on the list so far, Nope, I admire all the work you took on yourself with this one. Looks like you were the right MoFo for the job. ;)

I haven't seen Dune primarily because of its reputation, and while I find interest in Lynch, I'm not a fan (yet) and I need to really dive deeper into his works in general, so maybe this will come along with a binge in the future...

Looper was really interesting, with a great vibe and an interesting story, until they screwed it all up in the end and with the whole boy with powers aspect. I wish they just kept the story about Joseph-Gordon Lewitt, his job and his future self. The eventual big climax had eventually turned its focus completely on what I thought was a sub-story... a shame.

Can't wait for more !!!

Dune is one of the worst films i've ever seen and i'm the curator of the Lynch Club. Can understand if fans of the book dig it but then all i've heard is that it's not a good adaptation. To me it was a boring mess but i'm happy to see it here anyway. Never seen Looper.

Also i wasn't sure if there was going to be a one pointers list or not and was thinking about having Duck Dodgers as my #25, forgot to ask though. Others may have voted for it anyway.

Why didn't you submit one? Not a sci-fi fan? I'm not really either but thankfully Nope allowed us to go by IMDB so i got to pick certain not strictly Sci-Fi films i lovve. I doubt Solaris will make the top ten; i think it will be pretty high but i think there's too many films that more people would have seen than Solaris.

Do you mean the 1972 or 2002 version? Or both?

I really did not enjoy the American version. I saw it first, and it made me hesitant to watch the original, but I did anyway and liked it quite a bit more, but didn't love it. Unfortunately I don't remember much about it, and I didn't have time to rewatch it before submitting my list.

Just never had 25 I was comfortable with. Honestly, I never considered myself a fan but there are a few I love. Makes me feel like I haven't seen enough.

Speaking of the few I love. Looper would have made my list. My second favorite movie of that year.

I like Looper, but I don't love it as I have some problems with the way time is being used in it, which is the case for most time travel films. There are only a few films that get it right (according to me) and those are on my list. Metaphorically the old vs young self kind of works, but the story doesn't fully use that potential either, so it kind of falls flat in the end too.

Looper wasn't on my list, but I'm OK with it being on the top 100. It's not a bad film overall and a lot of people probably love it for the reasons that I didn't. I respect that. There's still a lot of cool stuff going on in the film as well.

Haven't seen Dune yet.

Nope, the countdown looks great! Thanks for doing this for us:)

Dune...was #8 on my list and believe me I've seen a boat load of sci fi movies:p You guys need to see Dune before you decide it's crap. I've seen it numerous times and the extended version is crap, but the original theatrical cut is worth watching.

The theatrical cut is not without it's faults, mainly do to the very long and complex novel being condensed down into a 2 hour movie...which gives a visually rich looking film without a lot of meat for the story.

Dune (theatrical cut) is worth watching, but go to Wiki and read the entire synopsis before seeing the film.

Looper is in imo a well made action sci-fi film which i rate [rate]3[/rating]. Not superb in anyway, but definitely a good watch / take on the sci-fi genre.

That said it was not in the vicinity of making my list.

I have Dune on DVD but i have no intentions of actually watching it. I <3 Lynch, but this film by its reputation, is not something i am looking forward to watching.

I have seen the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, which is quite fun :)

So far, so great Nope. The layout looks great and I like the stats box after the entries.

Looper was a bit hit and miss for me. It has great moments, and the basic story with Levitt and Willis is a good one, but the ending with the kid was predictable. Liked the Beatrix gag, though.

As for Dune, I haven't actually seen it, but I've watched and red stuff about it, enough to get the basic story and the trainwreck that was it's creation. I've heard the same as the others have said, though; if you're going to see it, go for the theatrical cut.

I agree with this. I completely stick by it being one of the worst films i've ever seen but clearly it works for others or it wouldn't have made the list so i'd give it a shot especially if you love Lynch and you own it.

I saw Looper a while back, and I remembered liking it so I rewatched it for this countdown. I liked it more this time, but it didn't make my list. It's a good movie, but not a great movie.

I tried watching Dune many years ago, but all I remember is being so bored with it that I turned it off part way into the movie. I haven't had any interest in trying it again.

I remember disliking Dune very much the first time I saw it. I had already read the books twice at that time, so you could say I was a fan. I just thought it tried to cram as much scenes from the (first) book into the pellicule.

But then I revisited it, and holly molly do I like it! How did Lynch manage to adapt such a dense and rich universe, that is a mystery to me. Plus, the soundtrack by Toto is amaazing :)

Btw, I must be the one putting it a #4, and I'm glad I did, because now it's on the list, and some of you may revisit it.

The first animated and/or superhero film to make the list. The Incredibles had a pretty slow start, but once it was first listed it started ramping up speed. The Incredibles was tied with Dune both in points and lists, so since the highest place The Incredibles got was 3rd compared to Dune's 4th, it won the tiebreaker.

Another Earth is one I've wanted to see for a long time... this only made me more excited about it.

The Incredibles is fun and entertaining enough, but I never thought of it to be much more than that. The action-packed movie is too fun and fast-paced to have the same depth and emotion as other Disney/Pixar films. It's there, but it's less present and it's not like I talk down to it for being more actiony... it's just the reason it never was much more than that for me.

I actually watched Another Earth a couple of months ago. Wasn't really what I was expecting but I did like it in the end. Its actual sci-fi quotient is really quite minimal. In fact the sci-fi element of the second Earth serves almost no purpose to the actual plot. Instead it exists more for metaphorical reasons, representing second chances and how our lives can be completely changed by the smallest of decisions and moments. I'd definitely describe it as more of a human drama about guilt and grief than a slice of science fiction. Once I'd realised that and accepted it I was able to get on board with it. That was helped immeasurably by a rather beautiful and heartwrenching performance from Brit Marling. In fact for her performance alone I'd say it was worth a watch for anyone that's not seen it

How is it not Science Fiction? Nevermind the superhero aspects, it contains technology that doesn't actually exist.

I like The Incredibles, never heard of the other.

One of the reasons I didn't make a list is Superhero and Star Wars movies. Could have filled a list with them easily, but they feel like a different genre. Goes against the spirit of Sci-fi in my opinion. Hard to find that line I guess.

I'll give you the technology, but unlike superhero movies such as Superman or Spider-Man (both on my list) and the Fantastic Four (not on my list, but with a totally sci-fi base story), the Incredibles never offered an origin for the heroes powers. Now, say they got their powers from a wizard in a cave or they came from a magic orb or something - that would severely diminish the sci-fi factor of the concept.

So every superhero movie ever needs to give an origin story? Okay, whatever.

No. I didn't say that. I'm just saying, like the movies I mentioned, the science-based origins establish them firmly as sci-fi superhero stories. Now, if we take a superhero like the Crow whose origin is one of supernatural reincarnation into a semi-corporeal form with super powers (it's basically a ghost story), it's still a comic book superhero, but has no elements of science fiction.

Personally, I loved The Incredibles, but it wasn't one of the first that came to mind when thinking of "science fiction."

My #3. Whatever. Old news for MoFo vets.
The Incredibles (Brad Bird, 2004)
http://www.news.com/i/ne/p/2004/family_650x267.jpg

I love everything about this movie. I realize that, first off, most people think of it as just a Pixar film or an animated film or a super hero film, but I think those tags for it miss the point of what I believe the film to be. It certainly tells a good story, not only in the context of a "family film" or the greatest James Bond film never made, but also in its overall creative presentation. The Incredibles displays sparkling wit and invention on almost every level: character animation, vocal expression, art direction/set design, the yummy musical score which sounds like it's from a '60s spy movie, only much cooler, and the use of both old-style "newsreels" and modern technology to make the plot more-complex and put the entire thing into larger satirical focus. This doesn't even mention the incredibly fast pace of both the editing and the verbal/visual humor.

A normal movie about super heroes wouldn't dig this deep into all the hassles inherent in being a super hero inside when the world won't allow you to express it on the outside. It also presents a family dynamic which is realistic in that it is so full of contradictions. The males in the Incredible family really want to express their super powers, while mom (Holly Hunter) knows it's better for the family (in more ways than one) to stifle them, just as the legal system and government have deemed necessary. The daughter is at the age where she's getting interested in boys but is very shy about this normal process and is able to use her power to help her get through it. The son just wants to be able to show off in sports once in awhile. The baby, well, we don't know about the baby...

Before I start sounding too serious and pompous about what I consider one of the most exhilaratingly FUN movies ever made, let me mention the "Incredible" supporting characters. Mr. Incredible's (Craig T. Nelson's) best friend Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) is one bad mutha, Jason Lee is a riot as a science/tech geek who wants to be Mr. Incredible's sidekick, and perhaps best of all, director/screenwriter Brad Bird plays Edna E. Mode, the costime designer to the super heroes, as a sort of cross between Edith Head and Linda Hunt.

All the gibberish above can just be ignored if you like, while I cut to the heart and soul of how I feel when watching The Incredibles. I feel like the giddy kid I was in the 1960s who fell in love with movies and cartoons. The main difference today is that I can love this film because it reminds me of so many other terrific films which are a part of me, yet it feels newer and more intense than almost all of them. Another thing I think about when I'm watching this movie is that it's a great FILM. I certainly don't think I'm watching a cartoon because these characters are real to me. I'm just glad that the technology is available so that a film classicist of the stature of Brad Bird can share this story with all of us.

I love The Incredibles, and I strongly considered it for my list, but since IMDB doesn't list it as "Sci-Fi", I didn't think it was eligible so it was cut from my list. I'm glad to see it made the list anyway because I thought it should have been eligible, but I waited too long to finalize my list, so I didn't have time to ask about it. (Plus my original list was so long that I was looking for any excuse to easily narrow it down.)

I watched Another Earth for this countdown, and I liked it a lot, but it didn't make my list mainly because it didn't "feel" like a sci-fi movie. Don't get me wrong. I know that it's a sci-fi movie, and I'm not saying that it shouldn't have been eligible for this list. I'm just saying that I had a very long list of movies that I wanted to include on my list, so one of the ways that I narrowed down my list was if the movie "felt" like a sci-fi movie, so some great movies were cut from my list just because they didn't have a strong enough sci-fi feel to me. But I highly recommend Another Earth to anyone who likes a good drama.

When I look up The Little Prince on IMDB it says Family, Fantasy, Musical. (But since it involves another planet it's definitely sci-fi, if in no other respect).

I still use the old version of IMDB's pages, so it shows the genres as "Family | Fantasy | Musical | Sci-Fi", but I think the new version only shows the first three genres on the top of the page, and you have to scroll down below the cast list for the rest of the genres.

Great format, Nope, and fun stuff so far!

I've seen only two of the four listed:

Dune and The Incredibles. Dune, I saw at the cinema, having just read the novel. The novel was fairly deep but worth the read. The movie simplified it a bit, but apparently the "powers-that-be" thought it was too incomprehensible so they either opted not to film some things or cut them out. I remember a movie book not unlike Leonard Maltin's guide (in fact, it may have been his) reviewed it, trashing it, and saying something like "you know you're in trouble when the movie is explained at the beginning and the explanation is almost impossible to understand!" I thought that was funny. And I remember Siskel and Ebert being divided over this, with Siskel HATING the movie. Ebert would bring it up every few weeks just to aggravate him. :) All that said, I liked the movie and will still watch it if it comes on cable. There was a mini-series remake made for TV in 2000 but I never saw that one.

The Incredibles was great but I really need to see it again. Once is just not enough.

I really want to see Looper and Another Earth, as I've mainly heard good things about them.

Didn't vote for any of these.

Looper - great sci/fi film that did not make my list. I like how it blends modern lifestyles with future technology. It doesn't come across as NOT believable in my opinion.

Dune - Never seen this one, but am interested in the remake we're going to get.

The Incredibles - Never considered this a sci/fi film, so it didn't make my list. Great film though.

Another Earth - Slow sci/fi. I liked it, but it wasn't memorable enough to make a TOP 25 of all-time list for me. There are too many great sci/fi films out there. Glad to see it though, means there are fans out there.

Dune is a very good movie [the theatrical version. there's another version, longer, that really adds nothing to it, except making it a lot more boring].

I find it hilarious that many Dune fans complain that Lynch's Dune is not a total rendition of the novel [and I'm so glad it isn't] and insist that Jodorowsky's would have been better, when the man himself says that his version would be NOTHING like the book. I would still watch it just to see what the crazy dude imagined, but in all seriousness, Lynch's version still beats the crap out of the TV version

Yeah, Dredd was written years ago, and the script was shelved for something silly like 4 years... they filmed it in 2010-2011, then it was shelved for 18 months as they had no funding to release it. Then eventually in 2012 it got released.

Then the script got copied, and ended up in the hands of the guys behind The Raid... and while the Dredd movie was still trying to get funds for release, The Raid fast tracked production, managed to secure funding, film it, and released it in the space of a couple months.

So people now think that Dredd is the copy, when in fact Dredd was written, filmed and completed years before The Raid was even thought of.

Altered States (Ken Russell, 1980) 4

Anybody calling this a "mellow Ken Russell flick" seems out of his mind but I stand by that statement based on most of the work he had done during the previous decade. Somehow this film is able to juggle intellectualism, extreme drug use, sensory deprivation tanks, the search for the first self, the concept of faith, at least in the context of loving another person, religious imagery, especially of the Judeo-Christian ethic, sexual attraction and obsession. overlapping dialogue, genetic changes and reconstitution, etc., so obviously it has plenty of fish to fry and can topple over into absurdity at almost any moment. Screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky apparently thought it did and had his name removed from the screenplay credits, but Ken Russell got the last laugh as he was able to turn the whole thing into a 2001-ish trip while never being boring and filling the screen with memorable imagery provided by cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth, complimented by an intense musical score by John Corigliano. William Hurt, Blair Brown, Bob Balaban and Charles Haid all give solid acting turns, and look fast for several actors in early roles, including a pre-E.T. Drew Barrymore.

Had I been able to submit Looper would have ranked higher, I consider that one to be a masterpiece and one of the best films of the last ten years.

Altered States, is an okay Ken Russell film you've got some really practical effects in that but I don't think it would rank in my top 100.

Another Earth was okay but it put me to sleep. The other Brit Marling film that came out that year The Sound of My Voice was I found vastly superior.

Incredibles was fine, I watched it once liked it well enough and moved on.

Still have to watch Dredd and Dune

Haven't seen Dredd but plan on it. Saw Altered States a couple of times long ago, and whoa, what a mind-trip that was! I liked it quite a bit back then but don't know if I feel like seeing it again. I feel the most important factor in the film has been left unmentioned, and that is the Blair Brown factor. Blair, who is frequently undressed in the film and smashing to ogle, is terrific in it. .Nothing Sci-Fi about her, just real-life flesh and blood and such beautiful flesh and blood! I've gone on too much about her, I guess. On with the list...oh, sweet Blair!

The only one from my list is The Man from Earth, at my #5, great film very philosophical, intellectual with a great idea well executed, films that make me think like that are rare.

I've seen criticism about the acting, I disagree it's a movie about dialogue which was well presented. Also, the main actor needed to have a sort of detached wisdom to be believable which he absolutely had, I thought, great film.

The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017) in pre-production with director Richard Schenkman who also directed The Man From Earth.

It could be an interesting sequel, but I expect it will be a big budget, block buster Hollywood type movie.

I remember reading that when The Man From Earth was being made, the big producers wanted to turn it into a block buster film, but Jerome Bixby who wrote it, and who's father wrote the original story idea, didn't want to go all Hollywood with it, so kept it a small indie film.

YES! YES! YES!

I'm so relieved. First movie from my list (I think... I tossed out my list, Nope please resend it to me) and it's my #1 movie. In case you didn't guess.

I think gbgoodies and I might have helped get this movie on the countdown, and thank God some other people helped, too.

I am now worried about my #2 movie, but, at least this showed up.

And I didn't just pick that as my #1 because Jake Gyllenhaal is in it. I seriously think it's one of his best movies ever.

The Man From Earth...almost made my list. I bet it made GBG's list. I think it's a great concept for a film. Yes, it has low production values, but do we really need crane shots and CG in every Sci Fi movie?

I love The Man From Earth, and I strongly considered putting it on my list, but even though I know that it's a sci-fi film, it just doesn't have a sci-fi "feel" to me, so it didn't make my list. I'm very happy that it made the list without my help. :)

I think gbgoodies and I might have helped get this movie on the countdown, and thank God some other people helped, too.

Source Code is another movie that I love, and this one is the first movie from my list to make the countdown. It was #16 on my list, but it could easily have been higher because I love all the movies on my list, so ranking them was extremely hard.

I still haven't seen Source Code yet, but mean to. I've never even heard of The Man From Earth, which slightly embarrasses me, as Tony Todd's in it and I really like that guy. So far, I'm batting zero on the list for films I've voted on.

War of the Worlds

First film to come before the 1980s to make the list so far. This film was tied with The Man From Earth, but was on one more list, so won the tiebreaker.

This was a film i was definitely not expecting to make the countdown. This one was tied with another film, but that one was on 7 lists instead of 4, so Wreck-It Ralph lost the tiebreaker.

War Of The Worlds is far too low imo
Wreck-It Ralph being here surprises me a little - good film just doesn't spring to mind for this for me.

Source Code - Really enjoyed this one, but it didn't make my list. Had the film ended when I thought it was going to (and where it should have) then it might have made it into the 25th spot, but yes, as others have mentioned, that ending takes it down a notch.

Wreck-It-Ralph - Didn't even consider this Sci/Fi and still don't. Really great flick, but shouldn't be on this list in my opinion.

Haven't seen the other two.

Never seen the original War of the Worlds.

As I've mentioned before, Wreck-It Ralph is really good entertainment and it's well done, I'm just not emotionally invested or truly captivated as with other Disney or Pixar films.

Wreck-It Ralph is such a fun movie and is among my very favorite movies of all time. Seeing that it was eligible for this list was one of the things that made me decide to send in a ballot at all.

I see some people are complaining that this list is "weird" and that some films don't fit their definition of Science Fiction, but those people need to remember is that this countdown is meant to represent MoFo just as much as it is to represent the genre.

It's about time Tom Cruise has made an appearance for War of the World's. Oh wait you mean that movie.

I find it hard to believe Wreck It Ralph is a Sci Fi film.

Only seen the Spielberg War of the Worlds which i hate. I had Wreck-It Ralph at #16, it was the animated film i mentioned that i like less than The Incredibles which i voted for. Great film top five Disney.

And guys we all know there's going to be films here that we don't think are Sci-Fi as Nope allowed us to pick any film with Sci-Fi tags on IMDB including in the extended tags. Is it really worth mentioning every time? If so carry on haha.

War of the Worlds at #90, ugh...I shutter to think where a classic like 2001 A Space Odyssey will end up, probably #89:rolleyes:

If you've only watched Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds, ask yourself one question, why? The 50s were the golden era of sci fi. Sure a lot of the films were B budget, but not War of the Worlds. It's available restored in high def too.

Probably number 1, since there are a lot of crazy people on here who love that movie for some reason.

Also, it's shudder. A shutter is something that goes over a window or is part of a camera. ;)

2001 will be top three at least.

I've only seen the Spielberg one because i don't watch Sci-Fi too often and i was dragged to see that when it came out.

I know it will finish high, I was being sarcastic about 2001:p

I'm one of the few people who actually like Tom Cruise and while I didn't hate his version of War of the Worlds, it's not that great. I prefer the original 50s version. No surprise there.

War of the Worlds (1953) is the first from my list to show up on this countdown.

H.G. Wells' - one of the literary pioneers of science fiction - classic story from 1897 of an alien invasion put to film for the first time.
Groundbreaking movie making and special effects for 1953 and a film that treated the subject matter with utmost seriousness.

Ha! My mistake of arranging my list in chronological order (as opposed to by preference) did something good.

These last two are just an example of movies that classicists (old movie lovers) and lovers of newer movies (including animation) like but appear to be diametrically opposed. If you look at all our MoFo lists, there are always "odd" or "weird" choices on the bottom halves of basically every list. My two choices were obviously considered strange too. The original WotW is on almost every sci-fi list ever made, including our other one. Maybe I don't think as much of it as others do, but I've watched it at least 15 times in the 50+ years since I first saw it. Ralph is a very good movie and got the IMDb-"approved" sci-fi label which The Incredibles didn't, but luckily (and obviously) Brad Bird's The Iron Giant did.

I've seen Wreck It Ralph once but I haven't revisited since couldn't really tell ya much about the film it didn't really stick with me. Most animated films I see these days never really draw me in and I don't really go out of my way to see them unless people are raving about them. I've also never seen the Original War of the Worlds.

The 1953 version of The War of the Worlds is a great early sci-fi movie, and it's far superior to the 2005 remake. I considered it for my list, but it's not a big enough favorite for me, so it didn't make my list. I'm glad that it made the countdown, but I expected it to be much higher than this.

I recently rewatched Wreck-It Ralph for the Animation Tournament, and after several watches it just keeps getting better and better every time, so it's quickly becoming a favorite movie for me. I was on the fence about whether or not it belongs on a sci-fi list, but I thought about the idea of the video game characters being real, and it reminded me of TRON, so I decided that it was sci-fi enough to deserve a place on my list. It was #21 on my list.

Sweet! War of the Worlds made it! It was #18 on my list and, like Captain Steel, it's my first pick to make it. I love this movie. From the first time I saw it as a kid, I never missed it when it aired. And I truly need to pick up the DVD, hopefully the restored digital version Citizen spoke of. Already have it staked out on Amazon.
