Not too surprised, except by the gap: 100 points between the top two? Is that the biggest gap on any of these lists, or at least the ones with more than X participants?

I think the comics list has a jump of 200+ between #2 and #1...

Just checked, the Comics List had a difference of 139 points between places 2 & 1... this list had a difference of 107 :)

Of course 2001 was way ahead, it's the best sci-fi film ever, and the best film ever. That's right. I had it at #1, and Blade Runner at #5.

Aaaand my list is now complete!

Sci-Fi is not a genre I'm as strong on as I want to be. I love a lot of sci-fi films, but I need to watch plenty more...

Anyways, seeing The Thing rank at #3 is the biggest surprise yet. How it got so high is crazy, but obviously I'm only glad for that. I had it at #13 but it could even have been higher.

1. Her #25
2. Children of Men #20
3. Terminator 2: Judgment Day #9
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind #27
5. A Clockwork Orange #7
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey #1
7. The Fly #15

9. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial #21

15. WALL•E #16
16. Planet of the Apes #17
17. Jurassic Park #13
18. Prometheus
19. The World's End
20. Ex Machina #30
21. Face/Off
22. Inception #24
23. The Martian #60
24. Westworld
25. Coherence

I'm glad to see more people had The World's End on their list. A very underrated movie. I should have bumped Coherence up instead of counting on a one-pointer placement, though I doubt it would have made the final list even so. Prometheus is a movie that has grown on me and I've really begun to appreciate it lately. Westworld was one of the only sci-fi films I watched in preperation for the countdown, but I thought it was really good and thought that it deserved a place somewhere towards the bottom. Face/Off was probably more action than sci-fi in the minds of most mofos, but since it counted I had to include it because it's awesome.

I did not have Blade Runner on my list, but I like the movie okay. It's visually and technically stunning but I'm not in love with it (yet). But who knows. So far I have only seen it twice and usually with films like this the third time's a charm! We'll see.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this, Nope1172! It takes a LOT of hard work and I admire the dedication. Great presentation and a very smooth running. Hats off to you my man.

Should've kept quiet - I don't think anybody noticed ;) Well, I suppose Ray, is about as much sci-fi as Caveman is:p

When will the list be available in the list section Yoda?
Longer than usual, in this case; fairly busy this weekend and I need to rewrite some code to make sure we preserve all these images. So maybe next week?

@Captain Steel (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=87640), I was very interested in seeing your list! I know you're a big sci fi fan and over the years you've given me some some neat sci fi recommendations.

I'm glad to see that you included a lot of the great classic sci-fis. Some comments on your list below and or

Captain Steel's list
1. Frankenstein (1931)
2. Destination Moon (1950)...one of the recommendations you gave me, a milestone in sci fi.
3. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
4. War of the Worlds (1953)
5. Forbidden Planet (1956)
6. Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), you're the man! I had this on my list too. Sad that it didn't make it:(
7. The Time Machine (1960)
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Kind of low, but, then I remember you did your list chronological. Question what would have been your top 10?
9. Planet of the Apes (1968)
10. Marooned (1969) another one that you told me about, made before the Apollo moon missions. This movie needs more attention.
11. Logan's Run (1976) for Jenny Agutter, the rest of the film is good too.
12. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
13. Superman I & II (1978)
14. Alien (1979)
15. Star Trek the Motion Picture (1979) I think me and you are the only two who like this movie, everyone else:rolleyes: Ha!
16. Road Warrior (1981)
17. Star Trek the Wrath of Kahn (1982)
18. Blade Runner (1982)
19. Back to the Future (1985)
20. Aliens (1986)
21. Robocop (1987)
22. Independence Day (1996)
23. Starship Troopers (1997)
24. Spider-Man I & II (2002)
25. District 9 (2009)...This and Spider Man II are the only one's I haven't seen.

Question what would have been your top 10?

Rules, as you know I have a hard time classifying films I like as one being better than another (see my past comments on Alien / Aliens). It really depends what mood I'm in - the first time I saw Solaris I was actually looking for a sci-fi, but was not in the mood for what I found. But I was intrigued enough by it to get in the mood to watch it again.

Age has a lot to do with it too - I remember hating most of 2001 when I was a kid.

If I were to redo my list I'd have ST-TMP higher because I love the movie - not for the things others hate about it, but for all the nostalgic reasons I've described in the past: first movie I went to with a friend without any parents, one of the early TV to film motion pictures, the reunion of the original cast, Klingons with spines on their heads! ;)

Now there's so many from this countdown that I want to see (some I've heard of and others I haven't).

@SilentVamp (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=87364) are you online
I am online now. :) I will do the 40's countdown. I considered it last year already when the 50's were done. So if there are no major objections to my running it, I will do it.

And if there aren't any objections, then I will probably begin it right after Easter.

Anyway, this is the Sci-Fi countdown, I won't go on about the 40's here. :) But congratulations and good job to Nope for doing this! I really apologize that I never got a list to you but at that particular time in life I really had other things that I had to focus on and I wouldn't have been able to concentrate on anything like this. But if I had sent in a list, I can say that my top 5 would've at least been these films:

1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. The Day the Earth Stood Still
4. E.T.
5. Star Trek II

A lot of help now, I know, but I just wanted to say what my top 5 would've been, at least. :)

Rules, as you know I have a hard time classifying films I like as one being better than another..... Met too! I had a monster list of over 250 sci fi films to narrow down to only 25 movies...impossible I tell ya:p

If I were to redo my list I'd have ST-TMP higher because I love the movie - not for the things others hate about it, but for all the nostalgic reasons I've described in the past: first movie I went to with a friend without any parents, one of the early TV to film motion pictures, the reunion of the original cast, Klingons with spines on their heads! ;) Interesting, we had similar viewing experiences for STTMP. I seen it first run at the drive-in, and it might have been the first drive-in I went to with friends. I was a huge Star Trek fan and just the fact that they finally brought the original cast back made the movie great for me. But more than that STTMP was and is, what I wished the original Star Trek would have been like, more serious! With less camp and more sciences...I know that's why GBG doesn't like it, as she likes ST for the fun camp. Which I like too, but I always wanted the crew of the Enterprise to be more serious and they were in STTMP.

I am online now. :) I will do the 40's countdown. I considered it last year already when the 50's were done. So if there are no major objections to my running it, I will do it.

And if there aren't any objections, then I will probably begin it right after Easter.

That's way too soon, IMO!

Rules, haven't responded because there's a lot here I'd like to comment on. Just a couple to start with:

The Incredible Shrinking Man was a ground breaker in concept and effects (many of its props were reused by other movies & TV shows) - it was handled seriously and even philosophically making it quite a deep film. I might have put it on my list if I remembered it at the time.

Robinson Crusoe on Mars is another past favorite (poor Adam West gets killed early on!) I don't remember why, but it seemed like it lost a little steam for me toward the end. Maybe I didn't buy Friday as an alien? I'll need a rewatch.

Wow Dr Strangelove was #101. Now I LOVE Dr Strangelove and have written about my love for the film on multiple occasions. But I left it off my list. While I can see how some people would consider it sci-fi, I just never did. To Me Dr Strangelove is a comedy first and foremost. While the nuclear Armageddon angle and Doomsday Machine could make it qualify, I just can't call it science fiction.

Captain Steel and Citizen, I also love Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Saw it twice in the cinema and was so pleased to see the beloved crew on the big screen. To be fair, there was some humor in it, like McCoy and Chapel seeing Spock and McCoy saying, "Spock! So help me, I'm actually pleased to see you!" and Spock just giving him the old "stone face." Or this following exchange, which is my favorite in the movie:
McCoy: Spock, you haven't changed a bit. You're just as warm and sociable as ever.
Spock: Nor have you, doctor, as your continued predilection for irrelevancy demonstrates. :D

I loved that they didn't dumb down anything and banked on the fact that the audience would know what they were talking about (when it got to the science part) and would appreciate it when the science and the humanity joined at the end. Great, intelligent action movie.

Interesting, we had similar viewing experiences for STTMP.

I wasn't a "Star Trek" fan when I first saw STTMP. My mother was a huge ST fan, and I saw it with her. Neither of us liked it, but for different reasons. I just thought it was a bad movie, regardless of it being a ST movie. My mom didn't like it because it wasn't the ST that she fell in love with so many years earlier. She said that the ST crew were all out of character, and the movie took the focus away from the characters that she wanted to see, and put it on Decker and Ilia.

I became a ST fan after seeing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I didn't love the movie because it was a ST movie. I became a ST fan because the movie was amazing. I loved the interaction between the characters, and the movie was just a great action movie too.

I came very close to putting The Abyss (1989), Predestination (2014) and Ex Machina (2015) on my list. If I made my list a year or two from now, after I've had a chance to rewatch these movies a few more times, they might all make my list. But it's hard to break into a list of favorite movies, (movies that I've seen so many times), with movies that I've only seen once.

This thread was fun.

I think everyone would agree that there were moments when you thought "How did that movie make the list?" and "How did this movie not make the list?" and "How did Movie X beat Movie Z"?

Some factors that help explain the list:

Differences in what is considered science fiction (This wasn't helped by IMDB, which I learned has inconsistencies in what it labels science fiction...)
Differences in what is considered a good movie.
Some of us (myself included) somehow forgot about certain titles (although this may say something about how much we really feel about those movies...)
Nostalgia.
Memory loss (ie. I haven't seen the movie in 30 years, but I remembered liking it a lot... and in inverse: I just saw a movie recently, and because it's fresh in my head, I favor it over a movie I saw 30 years ago... )
Some members didn't include sequels (or prequels), preferring instead to put the first in a series (I made this mistake with the Action Movie Countdown.)

In the Prediction Game, I guessed the majority of the top 10 right, but I got the movies in the wrong order - I made the mistake of putting them in the order that the AFI put them in. I should've put more thought into it.

I've made a little list of the movies I haven't seen and hopefully I will get to watch most of them.

Thanks Nope!

My List:
A Scanner Darkly

The themes and obsessions of Philip K. Dick resonate with me, and thus this was the third adaptation of his to make my list (along with Total Recall and Blade Runner), plus World on a Wire, which very much has a Philip K. Dick feel to it. I knew this one had pretty much no chance, and it’s certainly not hardcore science fiction, but I really like it and wanted to include it. The novel was quite autobiographical, as Philip K. Dick himself dealt with drug abuse while living with a bunch of drug addicts he couldn’t always trust, but the interesting aspect of the story is how one’s identity can become splintered, even to the point of not recognizing yourself on video. The rotoscoped animation is great.

Own this and watch it quite often. Not really sure why I didn't add this to list but very happy to see it AND to see some love for it.
I've read about half the book, NEED to finish it and they kept rather close to it in most respects and there's always a moment of sadness reading the names at the end of the movie and what happened to them.
Great movie.

Just noticed the full list you posted, thanks. Damn i was the only Melancholia or Eraserhead voter. I get Eraserhead but Melancholia is a surprise. Nice to see 2046 and Alphaville nearly make it, the latter wasn't far from my list.

Hmm... Melancholia is a film I thought had some nice effects, interesting concepts and good acting, but overall I just didn't like it that much, compared to some of Lars von Trier's other films like Dogville, or the films of the similarly-bleak director Michael Haneke. Yes, one expects a film by von Trier to be bleak, but in Melancholia the bleakness seemed a little excessive to me, and it didn't that seem there was as much of a point to it as in other von Trier or Haneke films.

Longer than usual, in this case; fairly busy this weekend and I need to rewrite some code to make sure we preserve all these images. So maybe next week?

What images do you mean? The ones in the thread's posts?

Yeah we don't see eye to eye on Von Trier then. I tried to watch Dogville and couldn't sit through it, i didn't finish it so i don't have a proper opinion but from what i watched i didn't like it. I found Melancholia very beautiful and i didn't think it was as bleak as say Dancer In The Dark.or Amour since you brought up Haneke; thought Amour was very well made and acted but that's a film i'd call excessively bleak.

Melancholia would have been very high on my list, but IMDb doesn't list it as sci-fi so I didn't think of it.

Hey, I posted my trainwreck of a list. Go for it!
It can't be worse than other people putting a whole bunch of non-sci-fi films on theirs!

I'll do a sci-fi list in more grandiose fashion sometime down the line, but:

1. Brazil (1985)
2. Stalker (1979)
3. Accion Mutante (1993)
4. Until the End of the World (1991)
5. Alien (1979)
6. Blade Runner (1982)
7. Escape from New York (1981)
8. Videodrome (1983)
9. Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future (1985)
10. Kin Dza Dza (1986)
11. Total Recall (1990)
12. The Thing (1982)
13. Hardware (1990)
14. Demolition Man (1993)
15. The Zero Theorem (2013)
16. One Point O (2004)
17. Avalon (2001)
18. Forbidden Planet (1956)
19. Aliens (1986)
20. Metropolis (2001)
21. A Scanner Darkly (2006)
22. eXistenZ (1999)
23. Cube (1997)
24. Visitor of a Museum (1989)
25. O-Bi, O-Ba: The End of Civilization (1985)

There are some huge omissions that I'm kicking myself for, and I put some movies higher just to give them more points.

Since the countdown is over I will list my list publically and I may do my own 100 sci fi countdown but not for a little while yet.

1 Star Wars A New Hope
2 ET
3 Star Trek 2 The Wrath Of Khan
4 Blade Runner
5 Alien
6 Predator
7 Terminator 2 Judgement Day
8 Planet Of The Apes Original Version
9 Men In Black
10 The Fifth Element
11 Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens
12 Independence Day
13 Avengers
14 Guardians Of The Galaxy
15 The Island
16 Transformers
17 Superman 2
18 Jurassic Park
19 2001 A Space Odessey
20 Robocop
21 Demoltion Man
22 Galaxy Quest
23 Avatar
24 Pacific Rim
25 Short Circuit

My apologies I miscounted how many of the 25 movies was in the countdown from my list.

Too be fair I kinda am surprised Tranformers 1 which I liked quiet a bit did not make the 100 but Demolition Man can. I like both movies fine but really both are very cheesy films but hey im an 80s child so its the genre close too my heart. While Transformers is a modern thing. I guess its hard to escape the random cheesy films. Now Pacific Rim and The Island in my opinion were solid films to consider ever though should have used Terminator and Superman 1 but i didnt and well cant change the past can only live with the results.

PREDICTION GAME UPDATE
Only two people predicted Blade Runner as the Runner up and they were kaplan and Holden Pike. (9 points to both of them)

So the final results are:

1. Holden Pike - 20 Points

Congratulations Holden Pike you have won the official Sci-Fi Countdown Prediction game! Your prize is eternal bragging rights for the rest of your time on this forum!

My secret was I really WANTED Blade Runner to be number one, which meant that virtually guaranteed it would be number two.

Thanks for running this list, Nope! I didn't get to monitor it and participate as much as I would've liked, but I have been ridiculously busy at work these past few weeks. I also wanted Blade Runner to place first, but second place is where I figured it would land. Both of the two top films have their detractors and fanatics, and I think both flicks are worthy for top honors.

Well done, all!

I fell way behind the list (dropped out at #13 I believe) and only just now catching up. Great job Nope.

Aliens I finally watched for the first time just prior to the countdown and wasn't massively impressed to be honest. I found it quite dull for a length period of time when they're just wandering around the place; and I hated the marines! Just such stereotypically loud, brash, macho characters. It's like James Cameron had just abducted the guys from Predator and transported them to space. The film did then pick up for me when it became more of a siege movie and they were trying to keep the horde of aliens out. However that goodwill started to erode as a result of the film just going on too long; I just felt it hung around way too long. Oh and I hated, absolutely hated, the whole thing between Ripley and the little girl. It was so nauseatingly cheesy and maudlin; just awful. As a fan of Mad About You back in the day my favourite part of the whole film may well have been Paul Reiser as the slimy corporate schmo.

The Matrix was #4 on my list. Since my first mind-blowing viewing I've just loved it.To be fair I think the age at which I first saw it certainly helped in forging my love for it. I first saw it when I was 12 or 13 years old, which I think was just a perfect age to see it as being the coolest thing ever!!! And that sentiment has largely stuck. I kind of still do think it's the coolest thing ever!!!

Both Terminator films made my list, with the first film certainly superior in my eyes. T2 is an incredible blockbuster; one of the all-time greats. But the first film is just such a intense, direct, barebones experience without an ounce of flab to it. Excellent.

I'm amazed that neither Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back were able to break the top 5. I didn't think either had a chance at winning because there would be people that would prioritise one over the other but I thought at least one would make the top 5 and in all likeliehood finish about 3rd. As I didn't vote for either however I'm not particularly bothered. I've just never really 'got' Star Wars. Well that's not quite true, I thought I did a few years back. So much so that I even included Empire on my top 100 list. What happened on that viewing I don't know. Whether I was delusional or whether I just managed to convince myself to love it, I don't know. I rewatched the films around the same time as The Force Awakens and based on those viewings I actually preferred TFA to the original films. And I know that will baffle pretty much everyone. The only reason I can come up with is my investment in the films. Even when I've enjoyed the original trilogy it was very much on a superficial level; I just found them fun. However I never cared about the story or characters. But with TFA I found that I really liked and engaged with the characters of both Rey and Finn, more so than I ever did with Luke or anyone

Back to the Future was my #1 and the only horse I felt I really had in the race to be at the very top of the list. Very disappointed to see it only made #5, especially on a personal level when I don't particularly care for any of the 4 films that finished above it. I think that BttF is just about the closest thing to perfect you can get when it comes to films. Smart, funny, exciting, great set-pieces, terrific performances, superb writing; just brilliant.

Every single film in the top 4 I had only seen once prior to this countdown being announced. I intended to give all of them another chance beforehand and was able to do so with 3 of them. Now I don't have a problem with The Thing. I think it's a decent enough film but I do continue to be somewhat flummoxed by the forum's fascination with it. Storywise it's got a very basic and rather repetitive template. And to really keep me engaged I feel the film would need to do more to differentiate the characters and make them distinct individuals to care about; as it was it didn't really do so. However I would absolutely recommend the film to anyone for one reason - Rob Bottin. I gave him a shout-out back when Men in Black appeared on the list and need to do so again. His f/x work on The Thing is astonishing and makes him the undoubted star of the piece for me. While I'd give the film as a whole about a rating_3, his personal contribution deserve a definite rating_5.

As for Blade Runner I think it looks terrific and that it does a fantastic job of world-building. However the characters and story just don't engage me in any way whatsoever, resulting in a frustrating watch. And 2001 was the film I wasn't able to give another chance to. The first time I watched it I have to admit to being one of those heretics who found it to be just about the dullest thing I'd ever seen.

Looking at the complete list of films and there were a few surprises. There were three films in particular that I'm surprised didn't make the list, and was absolutely astonished at how low they finished. I thought that Repo Man had a fairly healthy cult following around here that would have seen it make the list so to see it at #211 with only points is a bit of a shock. However I'm staggered at how low the new Planet of the Apes films finished. Rise at #321 (5 points) and Dawn at #291 (8 pts)?!!! Given both how popular they are and how recent they are in the minds of people I'm amazed at that. Also am I right in thinking that The Man Who Fell to Earth didn't receive a single point? Rather surprising. I was under the impression that was quite well thought of by a number of poeple and that it had a chance of actually making the list, especially in tribute to David Bowie.

Seen - 86/100
My List - 20/25

1. Back to the Future (#5)
2. The Truman Show (#94)
3. Wall-e (#16)

You can make a list of your own whatever you like it just cannot be in a countdown format which is a group of people and months of work on the host to compile and run. Doing them by your self you can always do. But perhaps morally wait a week to start posting it. I didnt and came off kinda not in a good light by not letting someone finish a previous countdown.

I only caught one problem... the #90 War of the Worlds is supposed to be the original and you tagged the Spielberg 2005 version. :)

I'm loving it winning both 60s and this and by that insane margin. F! AFI (no 15!), Empire 16, and on imdb is already out of top 100! Those are the only two lists except mine. Well this is a great crowd.
