Did you miss gunslinger45's post a day ago?

Yes I did, what I mean is I'm glad there aren't that many. 6 is an okay number but the list shouldn't have a lot is what I meant.

To be fair 6 out of 80 something I think qualifies as barely.
Dang! Everybody wants to fight with me today.

And I will agree with this. We had our Comics List that Rodent ran. It was awesome. And while many comics fall into sci-fi, the fact that this list focuses on other forms is a good thing.

Oh yeah? Well don't count your unhatched chickens before the fat lady sings because that number is about to rise as Superman and Spider-Man haven't even appeared yet (not to mention the masterpiece that is Mystery Men)! ;)

I have seen both, but only voted for Jurassic Park. It was my number 11. Gilliam is a great director, but for sci-fi I would still go with Brazil over 12 Monkeys.
1. Top 5 easy good chance at #1
2. Stalker (1979)
3. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
4. The Avengers (2012)
5. Should be top 15
6. The other possible number 1.
7. The Road Warrior (1981)
8. Has to be somewhere in the top 15
9. Predator (1987)
10. Not gonna make it
11. Jurassic Park (1993)
12. Will make it easy
13. I am probably the only one who voted for this movie
14. Should be top 15
15. Return of the Jedi (1983)
16. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
17. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
18. Gravity (2013)
19. This will show
20. Escape from New York (1981)
21. Independence Day (1996)
22. Planet of the Apes (1968)
23. Top 10
24. I would think top 20 to top 15

"Who cares what psychiatrists write on walls?!?" Brazil is Terry Gilliam's masterpiece, but in genre terms 12 Monkeys is his best Sci-Fi film. For my money, anyway. This is the first movie I ever saw in the theater where afterwards I exited and then immediately bought another ticket to see it again. I was already familiar with and liked Chris Marker's experimental classic La Jetée, and I loved how screenwriter Hampton Fancher's screenplay expanded on the theme and premise. When Gilliam added his own humor and visual strengths to the pot, what came out was perfect. I had it at number seven on my list. "Well, if you ask me, I think that monkey is gonna eat that ******* sandwich himself."
Jurassic Park is decent for a blockbuster, but it never really did much of anything for me, even before the never-ending sequels diluted the potency of the original. It wouldn't have made my personal top hundred, to be honest. But, hey, the kids loved it.
Seven of my remaining ten will make up the top dozen.

Do I even need to say anything? I knew people liked JP, but was not expecting it to make the top 20. The film has its problems & I acknowledge them but I absolutely love it. It's amazing how a film from 1993, a film which came out before I was even born, could still contend with films being released today in the special effects department. Including the 3rd sequel which relied almost completely on CGI save one scene.

Twelve Monkeys was my #20.
This is a great example of how to properly remake an art film into a blockbuster. It's a fantastic piece of highly entertaining and equally intelligent cinema!

Some good discussion going on in here, guys.
I had 12 Monkeys at #20.
Another double bill for me!
12 Monkeys is a terrific film and for me it's second only to the Back to the Future films in terms of how successfully and creatively it utilises its time travel concept. Its labyrinthine tale of madness and time travel make for an absorbing and emotionally engaging experience that is played out by a trio of strong performances, particularly Pitt and Willis.
And I love Jurassic Park, have done so ever since I was 7 years old. It was the first big blockbuster film I ever saw; pretty much the first film that wasn't an animated or family film. So for me I think I have a similiar relationship with it that lots of people have with Star Wars. Even to this day, almost 25 years on (holy sh*t!!! 25 years? That's terrifying!) it still feels like a true event movie when you watch it. The special effects still impress, the work of Stan Winston still thrills and the film as a whole still makes me feel like a young kid when I watch it. Steven Spielberg brought the dinosaurs back to life! To a 7-year-old boy that was the greatest thing anyone could have ever done.
The film features perhaps my favourite ever movie moment; it's definitely up there. It's the moment where the characters see a dinosaur for the first time. For a few tantalising seconds all we see are their reacions and then we see it - an honest to God, real-life motherf*cking dinosaur!!! Throw in a snatch of John Williams' iconic score and for me it's the absolute definition of movie magic.

Twelve Monkeys was on my list. Not a big fan of Gilliam, but this is one I really enjoy watching. Very good performances from Willis and Pitt.
Jurassic Park was my #21, but Twelve Monkeys didn't make my list, although I do like it.
I enjoyed Jurassic Park when it first came out and I still do. It's an excellent popcorn flick, and for the generation after mine, it's apparently their Jaws. My love for the flick may be partly due to my fascination as a kid with dinosaurs. I read everything I could about dinosaurs up until I was about ten years old, I'd make my own books about them, with write-ups and my own drawings. In fact, probably the only things I liked to draw more than dinosaurs were space aliens and their spaceships, But this was back in the 1960s, and it's amazing how many dinosaurs have different names now and how different they're looked upon now compared to 45 years ago.
Now, as far as Jurassic Park goes, I couldn't relate to any of the lead characters as much as I did with those in Jaws. Jeff Goldblum's Malcolm was the closest to a memorable character along the lines of Richard Dreyfuss's smartass Hooper. Anyway, I don't really think that Jurassic Park is all that important in the scheme of film history except for the fact that it just got more people to totally buy into CGI characters (even if they aren't humans) more than any movie previously. Then again, my fave scene in Jurassic Park doesn't have any (or very little) CGI. It's the scene where the T. rex takes apart the car the kids are in. That's as close as JP ever gets to reaching the heights of Jaws in my book. :)

12 Monkeys very nearly made my list, but I ultimately wasn't feeling like it when it came to putting them all into a list. A little surprised to see it this high and above Brazil to boot, but not too much considering how much more accessible it is despite the Gilliam-ness of it all.
Jurassic Park goes alright, but I didn't vote for it.

12 Monkeys was #23 for me. I really dug it as a kid and tried to wrap my head around the logistics of it all. I think I need a re-watch to see if I should have placed it higher, but either way, a great SCI/FI film. Pitt is off the walls insane, the complete opposite of the subdued and delusional Willis. Gilliam has all the classic weirdness he is known for and employs it to the story elements strengths here.
As for Jurassic Park...I really wanted to put it on my list, I really did......so I did. #11 in fact. Talk about a 'classic' Hollywood blockbuster film. I've seen it countless times, the mix of CGI and animatronic dinosaurs works wonderfully. Some of the cgi is a bit dodgy today, but the nighttime scenes still look spectacular. Great addition.

I had Twelve Monkeys on my list at #12, which I'm only now realizing is a bit amusing. I really wanted to rewatch it for the Countdown since I haven't seen it in about a decade now, but I didn't quite manage to get around to it (despite it being one of the first films I tagged for a repeat viewing). I've always liked Brazil just a little more, though I thoroughly enjoyed both films.
Jurassic Park was a difficult cut from my list. Some of my friends adore that film, so naturally we went to see it a few years ago when a local theatre was playing it again for a limited time. There was an error with the sound at the start (as in, it was completely mute), but my friends starting making the sound effects, and suddenly the entire theatre (which was small but packed) joined in and we provided our own audio track for the first 15-20 minutes. It was a blast, and it was actually a little disappointing when they fixed the sound haha.

I didn't see 12 Monkeys at the theatre, but what turned out to be just as good, or better, was seeing it for the first time at a friend's on laserdisc just after it was released. Without a doubt it was one of the most amazing movie watching experiences ever. We then watched it again with the commentary track, which was a totally new experience for me, and watched whatever featurettes were included. I got my own copy of it and watched it a bunch more times over the next several years and all these years later it was an easy decision to include it near the top of my list, at #4, one spot ahead of Brazil.

12 Monkeys got Universal's deluxe Signature Collection box set treatment. Three discs, in addition to the audio commentary track the highlight of the extra features is the really wonderful doc "The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys", made by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe who were later also on hand to capture the unmaking of Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in their Lost in La Mancha. NO MORE PAPERWORK! :D

Getting into the real meat now. I love Twelve Monkeys and gave it five popcorn bags here, which tells you how much I love it. Everything just clicked for me in this movie. It's my favorite visual film from a very visual director, if that makes any sense. Take for instance Bruce seeing a male lion roaring on the roof of the library. Just wacked-out but totally sane also. Jurassic Park I also love, but I didn't include it just so I could make space for others, but it was a difficult one to cut. I like all of the "Jurassic" films but this one, for me, is the only one that is a classic.

Okay, this is going way better than expected... All the movies posted now I also predicted to appear in these slots, but in a little different order. I got two spots correct though. Yay me!
My predictions:
13. The Fly
14. Jurassic Park
15. Planet of the Apes
16. WALL.E
17. Twelve Monkeys
18. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Actual list:
13. Jurassic Park
14. Twelve Monkeys
15. The Fly
16. WALL.E
17. Planet of the Apes
18. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Anyways, Jurassic Park was #17 on my list. An absolute classic adventure film. Did not have Twelve Monkeys on my list but I have seen it. It was good.

Awesome. I assume that's your own copy. I was never privileged enough to own my own laserdisc player. I'd like to get it on bluray, but I've read it's not quite as good as it could be, so I'll wait.

I was 15 when I went with a buddy to see Aliens opening night, I don't remember exactly but they mustn't have checked our ids. It was a packed house and the cinema was alive from the opening minutes. Everyone cheered throughout, and it turned out to be one of the best moviegoing experiences of my life. It was so great that I took my parents the next night. As an action film, it's on par with Die Hard as my favorite of all time.
I'm not a fan of the sequels, but I quite enjoyed The Matrix.
My list-
#2 Strange Days (81st)
#3 Aliens (12th)
#4 The Fly (15th)

Yes! A two-fer for today! Aliens is my #6 and I completely love this movie. Sci-Fi, horror, action, comedy, tension, etc. etc. Greatness. Too many superlatives to lavish on this classic movie.
The Matrix was my #21 and is still a fine movie. The effects still work for me and I thought Keanu did fine in his role. Introduced me to Carrie-Anne Moss and what a great thing that was. :randy: And of course, Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith, a brand new villain that I looked forward to for each installment. I've heard a rumor that The Matrix is going to be remade and I just feel like cussing.

Matrix was #8 for me. Still love this movie. I know a lot of hate is thrown at it, but from the first movie theater watch to any time I do a rewatch I enjoy it. The cast, the whole Alice Down the Rabbit Hole, the action and even the dialogue. To use the cliche, it's a great lil edge of the seat movie.
And SPEAKING of edge of the seat; Aliens! The ONLY reason that I did not put this on my list is simply that I see this as more Action than Science Fiction and yes, a technicality, but, sadly, one I adhered to.
Still, a truly EXCELLENT sequel to the original movie.

I have seen both but only voted for Aliens. Aliens was my number 19. Still my favorite in the franchise, I am one of the guys who prefers the action sci-fi badassery of Ripley and space marines vs xenomorphs. Right up there with Ripley with a pulse rifle and flamethrower and her power loader fight with the Queen. I love Ridley Scott's Alien (and it will be on my list too), but not as much as Alien.
Now I still like The Matrix. The first one anyways. It was a awesome sci-fi movie with a cool premise and it has Keanu Reeves kicking all kinds of ass. That being said I left it off my list. My taste for The Matrix has soured in part due to the other two movies. And if I am going to watch a Keanu Reeves action movie, I will watch the John Wick movies and Street Kings first.

As for The Matrix, I had that film pretty high on my list, #4 to be exact. Absolutely love that film and the lesser sequels cannot take away my enjoyment of it. It changed the way films were made. Still as thrilling, thought provoking and fun to watch almost 20 years later.
As for Aliens, I REALLY wanted to have it on my list, but I made a rule that only one film from any given series can appear on my list. Other wise it would be full of more than one film from any particular series (Star Wars, Alien, Terminator, etc). So I had to exclude it. Heartbreaking, as I absolutely love that film as well.

Barring some unforeseen upsets, I think that the top 10 will most likely consist of nine other films I voted for and also Back to the Future (which is still quite good, but I don't quite love it the way so many others do) so I don't think I really need to comment any further until it's all over.

I thought I had both Aliens and The Matrix on my list, but it turns out neither of them make the final cut. I remember why I cut Aliens since I didn't want to include multiple films from the same franchise if possible, but considering the influence The Matrix had (whether you personally see that as good or bad), I think it really did deserve to be on my list.
When The Matrix was hitting theatres, I was so excited to see it, and glad that our local theatre was getting it (I lived in a small town with a one-screen theatre that got one new release months late, if at all, or sometimes one popular new release and one children's/family film since they could play one in the afternoon and one in the evening). I was only 12 at the time, but not only did I look significantly older than that, but said local theatre was not in the habit of turning away slightly younger audiences from R-rated films, even if they were unattended.

I saw the first Alien movie, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen Aliens. Either way, it wouldn't have made my list because those movies are too close to horror for my taste.
I liked the visuals in The Matrix, but the movie was only okay, so it didn't make my list.
Based on the predictions list that's being posted, I'll only have 3 more movies on my list that will make the countdown. I'm not surprised at some of the movies that missed the countdown, but there are a few that I thought had a chance, and I'm surprised that they didn't make it.
Seen: 73-1/2 out of 90
My list: 10 so far
1) E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
2) WALL·E (2008)
3) Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
4) The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
6) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
13) The Avengers (2012)
16) Source Code (2011)
21) Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
23) Galaxy Quest (1999)
24) Jurassic Park (1993)

Minority Report (Sci-Fi)
http://img.phimhot.info/h/64i3LJp
"Minority Report" is fast paced sci-fi with many twists about pre crime division of law enforcement that captures murderers before they commit murder. Themes include: freedom of choice vs. determinism, possibility of perfect political system, morality of sacrificing few for greater good, sacrificing freedom to save the world vs. freedom in the world that doesn't need saving.

Seems too me obvious that Alien is now gonna be in the top 7 films somewhere ut i always considered Aliens then better movie but yet Aliens did not make my list and i will not say if the other did. But I just figured that Alien 1 and 2 would make this list just not sure which would go off the board first.

I've never been able to decide which is the better film, so I just leave that they are 2 sci-fi films dealing with a similar subject (and a character that bridges the two) with a different approach. The first focuses more on incorporating horror, chills, shock, timing, suspense and a thriller atmosphere while the sequel (although not short of any of these) brings more of an action, combat, "let's rock & roll" feeling.
Aliens might still be too intense for gbgoodies, but might be worth enduring the horror for the roller coaster ride.
"Game over, man!" (RIP, Bill P.)
Are we really comparing one of the best Sci-Fi/Horror movies of all time with Aliens? Glad Aliens didn't make the Top 10, though I think it didn't deserve to be in the Top 50.

If it were completely random, you'd have a 3,628,800 to 1 chance of guessing the exact order correctly. Since it's not random, and theoretically there is skill involved, it's a whole lot better. But still a long shot. Especially with this list, it seems.

Interesting. I love them both equally. I think the success of Aliens is we got a sequel that was a great movie, but not exactly the one we were expecting. That, I think was one of the great things about it - it wasn't just Alien over again (or just with more Aliens), but a different kind of film entirely. Yet it still held on to various horror, suspense and atmospheric aspects from the first film.
You could also look at it that the first was "civilian" (Merchant Marine?) and the second was "military" (the Marine Corps).
I look at them this way: the first one you watch curled up in your seat, munching your popcorn, waiting to grab the person next to you, the second you jump up and down while accidentally throwing your popcorn and shaking the person next to you. :)

Seen it, love it, had it at 14. I am surprised the first Terminator shows up before T2. What with The Terminator making the Top 10 of the 80's list and T2 making only the Top 20 of the 90's list. Oh well, who am I to complain? I like T2 a lot better and it is higher on my list.

I like both Terminator movies but voted for neither. In fact, at this point no more films from my ballot will be appearing on the countdown.
I like The Terminator plenty - I give it 3.5, but it didn't make my list. Instead I put stoopid crap I considered great and sci-fi when I filled it out. Some Arnie quotes:
"My friend James Cameron and I made three films together, True Lies, The Terminator and Terminator 2. Of course, that was during his early, low-budget, art-house period."
"Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer."
"Money doesn't make you happy. I now have $50 million but I was just as happy when I had $48 million."

At last the circle is complete. When last we met I was but the learner, now...I'm still the learner! I should have saved that for something I'm almost dead certain will show up but I couldn't wait. Nine slots to go and only seven left on my list, but I'm almost sure that at least two won't make it at all.
I had The Terminator at #22, but should have put i higher. Still, there's a part of me that loves all the movies on my list and I watch them all equally enough, from year-to-year (of course the older ones I have on DVD or that make the go-rounds on cable). Just because of it's placement on my list doesn't mean I love it any less than most. I mean, there's one in the middle of my list that I'm sure will probably make it really high because of the respect it gets on this board, but is one that I put mainly because if it didn't exist, Sci-Fi might have stalled out for a long, long time at the cinema. Anyway, as Arnold said as Conan, "Enough talk!" :)
EDIT: I have eight slots left, so I may not have so many left on the list.

I really enjoy both Terminator and Judgement Day, so I wasn't sure which one I wanted to include more. I settled on the first film, but kept changing my mind, and in the meantime I filled my list with other films to the point where there wasn't room for either. Looking back now, there are 3 films I could easily change out for either Terminator, but it's a bit late now. I'm glad Terminator didn't need my help to make it to the top of the Countdown, and I imagine Judgement Day is still to come.

Damn, I thought T1 was more loved here... I predicted it at #5. It did make the top 10 still, so that is impressive.
Anyways, I did not vote for it. I love the sequel and have watched that many times, but despite watching the first one first in my childhood (I think at least) I haven't gotten back to it in years.. therefore I didn't vote for it. Also I'm not as big a fan of the first as far as I remember.

The Terminator is the only one from my list to appear since my last visit. I had it at #16 and, while I'm not surprised to see T2 above it (presumably) I am on the divide with those who think it's the better of the two. Maybe it's because I'd seen it a few times before the sequel came out? Maybe it's because I feel they really drag the ending of the sequel out (not that that doesn't happen in the first, too, but to a lesser extent I feel) or maybe just because the sequel is more of an action film than the previous one? Whether it's one of a combination of those, it's better. Also, while still entertaining, I feel the sequel is too long. Despite all that, don't be too surprised if I have something to say about the sequel when it shows up.
I think I have three more to appear in this countdown.
Nice to see 12 Monkeys make the list and highly placed, too. Had I seen it more recently or more times it might've made my list.

I have little to no use for any of the sequels, including the one most people love, but the original Terminator still holds up and is still a lot of fun. Saw it on the big screen again last year and had a blast. I had it at the bottom of my list at number twenty-four, but had to have it in the mix, somewhere. If only to keep it THAT much closer to T2 on the countdown, even knowing the sequel would easily place higher. I have six of the remaining nine on my list.

I have seen Terminator, Aliens, & The Matrix, but none of them were on my list, only one that would of made my list would of been Aliens but I left it off because I didn't want to put more than 1 film from a franchise on my list. I don't hate the Terminator films I like the first 2 films to a degree but they aren't anywhere close to my favorites. It also doesn't help that I'm not the biggest fan of Schwarzenegger and the only film with him in it that I really like as a whole is Predator. The Matrix on the other hand I'm just not a fan of. Didn't even bother with the sequels which I heard weren't good anyways.

Just like that James Cameron is now tied with Spielberg for most films on the countdown (4). To be honest, I didn't expect any Terminator film to make the top ten, let alone two of them (and back to back to) It was actually a pretty close race between the two of them with T2 only appearing on one more list than its original.

Terminator 2 is one of my favourite film sequels. I think the T-1000 is a great villain, and I don't mind the added comedy and heavier focus on action at all. As a kid I always liked T2 the most, but over the years I started to appreciate the first film more, to the point where they're about even now. Like I said earlier when I commented on Terminator making the Countdown, I didn't end up voting for either.
Whenever talk of T2 shows up, I usually quote this line from Spaced because it speaks the truth:

I think when I first saw T2, I liked it even more than the first. Unlike the first, I don't think it has held up that well.
I've always liked T2 although recently I find more dead spots than I did when I saw it at the theatre. However, it's got enough great F/X and action, so I still rate it 3.5. I'm going to have 22/25 total. I almost revealed one of mine which won't make it, but I'll hold back for now. Back to T2 - you may have this memorized or not - this is certainly worth another watch.

Close: it was fourth. But I think only a few of the films left are from the 80s, so the difference might not require any explanation.

And here is my favorite Terminator movie! I love the original, but I adore T2. T2 builds upon the original in many different ways. T2 has certain characters grow (namely Sarah Conner), ups the action to 11, uses CGI effects that still look excellent today, and has some of the best action scenes, and stars the best action hero the 80's and 90's had to offer. I know a lot of people prefer the original, and I will even concede that the original is a much more sci-fi then T2 (which is much heavier on the action). But even then I still think T2 is the better of the two. It is my favorite in the series, I think it is one of THE BEST action movies ever made, it is one of my top 25 favorite movies of all time, and I have ranted and raved on how much I have loved it in the past. I also had it as my number 5.

Kind of the same here as to why neither the Terminator movies nor Predator made my list (and it's been so long since I've seen them that I somehow think they're all the same Arnie movie). ;)

I remember liking Terminator 3 when it came out. It's the only Terminator movie I've seen in a theater.
It has a bad rep, and that may be undeserved, somewhat. The other Terminators that have come out since then haven't seemed all that good at all. I'm going to say the same thing I said when Return of the Jedi showed up on the Countdown: I like the Star Wars films well enough, but I never fell in love with them like a lot of people I know did. I was always more of a Star Trek person instead.
Empire is probably the film I like the most in the series, followed by A New Hope. Most of the scenes that come to mind when I think of Star Wars are from Empire, a fact that kind of surprised me when I rewatched the original trilogy after not seeing them for years. Those three films used to air back-to-back on tv a lot when I was young, and the first two had blended together in my mind somewhat since I'd usually watch A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, then head to bed part of the way into Return of the Jedi (or not watch it at all), because it would usually be pretty late at that point.

Wow, I'm surprised. I had Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back at my #1, and I truly thought it would at least be in the Top 3. It's definitely my favorite Star Wars movie but I love/like them all to varying degrees. Have seen every one of them at the cinema first because these films need to be seen on the big screen. *sigh* anyway, here we go:

Did I see your last movie count at 90/90 on this list?
You been swotting up since the countdown started?
I didn't watch any films specifically for this list although I watched for the first time both Arrival in mid-January and Predestination in mid-October. Today, I had Empire at #11.
I realize that I'm one of those people who saw Star Wars at the theatre upon original release, twenty times in the first year, so to me, yes, it was something akin to the second coming of Jaws. No, this time the film didn't save my life, but I graduated from college just about a week after the film came out, so it did seem to come along as the completion of the Jaws miracle two years previously. Nowadays it's usually taken for granted that people think that The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the series, but I still don't buy it personally. Sure, the sequel is more-serious and darker, more-operatic, introduces the Jedi Yoda, and has one of the greatest reveals in film history, but it's just not really all that fun and then it ends anti-climatically. I love The Empire Strikes Back, but I love Star Wars much more.
On directing The Empire Strikes Back:
"I think it went beyond Star Wars. You had some humor, you got to know the characters a little better. I saw it as the second movement in an opera. That's why I wanted some of the things slower. And it ends in a way that you can't wait to see or to hear the vivace, the allegretto. I didn't have a climax at the end. I had an emotional climax."
"Of all the younger guys around, all the hot shots, why me? I remember [George Lucas] said, 'Well, because you know everything a Hollywood director is supposed to know, but you're not Hollywood.' I liked that."

I'm going to say the same thing I said when Return of the Jedi showed up on the Countdown: I like the Star Wars films well enough, but I never fell in love with them like a lot of people I know did. I was always more of a Star Trek person instead.
Me too! Big Star Trek fan, small Star Wars fan.
I liked The Empire Strikes Back when I seen it for the 10th Hof. I didn't like Lucas mucking with the original print and adding CG stuff, so I'm going to pretend #8 on the countdown is the original The Empire Strikes Back:p

Strange that A Clockwork Orange is in the Top 10 at #7 for "science fiction" movies.
Dystopian future... yes, but that's about it as far as sci-fi elements go. It's more of a black-comedic social study than anything else and even it's near-future setting isn't really necessary to the plot. I'm not dissing it as a movie, just questioning how it's ranked so high up as a science fiction.
Fabulous

After the countdown, I think we're all going to need to make lists of movies we forgot about, but wished we'd remembered.
For instance, another dystopian future movie I just remembered is Rollerball (the original of course). Still don't know if I'd place it within the Top 25, but I completely forgot to think about it.

My review: Rollerball (1975) (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?anchor=1&p=1228431#post1228431)
I had A Clockwork Orange at #9. Hey, it was #9 on the last Sci-Fi List we adopted so I had no problems voting for it. I wrote this next part when I was still teaching full-time.
Well, A Clockwork Orange sucks the viewer in with a weird, otherworldly atmosphere by using high-contrast photography and a Beethoven soundtrack. It isn't science fiction. It's closer to some kind of alternate universe. Almost immediately it pummels you with sex and ultraviolence in an attempt to either turn you on or turn you off (or perhaps more significantly, both at the same time). The subject matter is rather repulsive but the cinematics are spectacular. We follow Alex and his "little droogies" around while they "shag and fag" and vicariously see things which seem beyond the pale, but Beethoven is just oh so beautiful.
Then, the flick turns a bit more serious and substantial when Alex ends up in prison and is enticed to undergo some kind of miracle therapy. I know many people who love the first part of the film but say that the next section (the point of the film) is "boring". They wanted more in-out and ultra violence. Well, we do get to that and that's the film's coup. The authorities basically use A Clockwork Orange itself as the miracle cure for Alex to become a "normal member of society". Alex is forced to watch a facsimile of A Clockwork Orange to get repulsed by rape and violence, and since Beethoven is on the soundtrack, it deeply disturbs and affects him. The whole thing is really just a political scam though with Alex as the guinea pig in the middle of a political war. However, even the "peace and freedom" types want their revenge on Alex so the whole movie comes full circle.
Now, I realize that what I'm saying here is nothing new or enlightening. It's always been there right in the film. But as time goes by, and I get more and more students who started watching ultra-violent films and pornos when they were five-years-old, and they mostly have a kid or two by the time they're 15 and they belong to gangs and want to do things like Alex does in the first part of the movie, A Clockwork Orange takes on a kind of prescience which makes it seem better now than when it was first released. But I've always been deeply disturbed because I loved the film the first time.

As I've mentioned before, I've gone through different phases with this movie. What surprised me was how much more I was able to see in it in a later viewing.
If there was a movie that would be prime for a remake (as its themes are classic, but where more messages about our current era could be inserted and would seem extremely timely wrapped up in analogies about an ultraviolent sport, dependence on technology and a ruling corporatocracy) Rollerball is it.
Unfortunately, we got that waste that they called a remake.

Zardoz was trippy and weird, but the messed up imagery was creative and the line "The gun is good, the penis is evil" will live on.

I had a hard time getting through A Clockwork Orange the first time I saw it a couple decades ago, but I had a feeling I'd like it a lot more the second time, and now all these years later, it's one of my favorite movies. Even got to viddy it on the big screen a couple years ago. Since the movie is more satire than science fiction, I contemplated where on the list to place it, but eventually decided spot 2 was where it belonged. It's not science fiction simply because it presents a dystopian near future, but because of the aversion treatment and all its implications for society.

I always have to mention that A Clockwork Orange was the first "X-rated" film I ever saw.
My friend's parents (they were like former hippies) took us to a screening at Princeton University sometime in the late 70's. It was part of a double feature and the other movie I believe was Performance (1970) with Mick Jagger.
The rating that came on the screen for A Clockwork Orange was "X" (and I think Performance was rated X too.)
My friend's parents weren't sure what to do, but we all stayed and watched both. I don't know, but perhaps we saw versions of the films before they were edited to achieve "R" ratings, (???) but obviously the ratings changed since then.

I know what you mean, Cosmic, but I don't think Strange Days is light on sci-fi: it's got two major elements: a near future AND a completely radical sci-fictional technology that the story is built around.
Road Warrior just has near future and, if I recall, none of the tech in A Clockwork Orange seemed all that futuristic - even the brainwashing / conditioning technology seemed like stuff that's been used for decades (minus the little eye-forced-open hooks). ;)
For me, so much of 'Clockwork' fits perfectly within the era it was filmed.

I had a feeling that you might not have liked it, gbg. ;)
(Probably just a little too rapey.)
I doubt anyone is surprised that I hated it.

Apparently I'm the only one here who hated A Clockwork Orange.
No, you're not.

I wouldn't say I hated Clockwork... but I certainly don't see it the masterpiece people say it is.
Being in the top 10 is bad enough, but I'm glad it never made the top 5 tbh.

Anything Being Over any of the Original 3 Star Wars Movies, T2, ET and Blade Runner and Yet only Blade Runner and A New Hope has not appeared yet but never expected Abyss this high or Clockwork Orange and i dont consider Clockwork Orange a Sci Fi movie.

Not sure where you got the idea The Abyss was going to show at this point, because it's not. These are the films yet to appear:
The Thing
Star Wars
Back to the Future
Alien
Blade Runner
2001: A Space Odyssey
Citizen Rules

I expected Abyss to make the countdown towards the bottom of the list. I doubt many of the younger members have seen it, so that's maybe why it didn't make it. It's not talked much about anymore. Great film BTW, if anyone is inclined to take a recommendation.

I saw The Abyss at the movies. It's pretty good and I'm a little surprised it didn't make it.

Strange that A Clockwork Orange is in the Top 10 at #7 for "science fiction" movies.
Dystopian future... yes, but that's about it as far as sci-fi elements go.

So making people become unable of physically doing crimes by making them watch specially designed films is not "science fiction" according to you?

A Clockwork Orange was my #5. A work of very rare cinematic effectiveness by the master of filmmaking himself.

In my best Charlton Heston voice...Oh! My! God! where in the hell is Soylent Green?
Since there's no chance of it making it at this point, I guess I can reveal that Soylent Green was on my list and I'm also surprised it didn't make it.

So, keeping with the theme of "green," I guess it's a sure bet that The Green Slime is not on the list. Oh dear! Well, that's all right 'cause it wasn't on my list either! :)

Forcing people to watch films as an aid to brainwashing has been around for quite a while. Like I said, aside from the eye hooks (and whatever the wires are supposed to be) brainwashing via classical conditioning & forced association is not a futuristic concept.
