Turns out that I didn't have Donnie Darko on my list, so The Hidden is the first from there to make it. I had it at #9. As a few have said, it's ridiculously good fun and completely trashy. God knows why I like it. :shifty: I've put it forward for a commentary a few times, but no takers as of yet.

What is The Hidden about? I've known of it, the poster looks interesting, but I've never seen it, of course.

Without giving too much away it's about specific members of an alien species that can take parasitic possession of a human body and basically use it as a vehicle (imagine, if you stole a car, you probably wouldn't be too concerned about treating it well if you could just ditch it at any time and get another.) The movie focuses on one alien pursuing another criminal alien on our planet, which also makes it an action-packed crime thriller!

I have to share the view of others here that The Hidden is a really great, underrated film. Wish I'd remembered it for the list. My description as to what it's about make it sound hokey, but it is a rip roaring, fun bit of entertainment that successfully spans several genres. Just as Alien perfectly blended sci-fi and horror, The Hidden blends sci-fi with crime thriller, police action, and a bit of horror as well. I don't remember it being huge on special effects, but it makes up for it with story and a roller coaster ride of action.

90. War of the Worlds (1953, Byron Haskin) ~ 20th
88. Galaxy Quest (1999, Dean Parisot) ~ 12th
87. Back to the Future Part III (1990, Robert Zemeckis) ~ I had this on my list, but ran out of space, and had to off it.
82. The Hidden (1987, Jack Sholder) ~ 3rd
78. Escape From New York (1981, John Carpenter) ~ Another movie that I kicked. John Carpenter is for sure on my list, and more than once, but I hope we don't see them listed for a long time.
I own Looper, but I still haven't checked it out. I truly don't believe it would have made my list. I hope I don't change my mind. Not that I want it to suck, or anything. :p

Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most entertaining movies in years, but I didn't seriously consider it for my list. I guess I was thinking of it as more of a MCU movie, albeit one of the very best. Now Escape From New York is one my favorite all-time movies, and for some reason I didn't include it on the list. Some of the movies that straddle the Sci-Fi line didn't make my list. Although there are a few that might be considered iffy.

Miss Vicky's posts on this thread have been cracking me up.
I was thinking earlier today how she and "Steve Freeling" would make a great couple (you know how opposites attract) - she seems to like very little, while Steve gives almost everything 5 popcorn boxes! :D

I missed Avatar in the movie theater, but I watched it on Blu-Ray, and it looks amazing, but the story is only okay. I have a 3-disc Blu-Ray set that has an extended version of the movie, but I haven't watched that version yet. Has anyone seen the extended version? Is it worth watching?
Extends some scenes, adds some new ones and gives a bit more backstory to Neytiri, but overall it just adds 15min of runtime. Great if you liked the movie and want more, but in the end it's filler. I have the same extended version (mine even has two different extended cuts...or four, as the dvds has their own extended versions) and I like both cuts, but I think I prefer the longer one.
Thanks for the info. My DVD set also has three versions, but when I try to watch the extended version, it gives me a message that I have to add memory to my Blu-Ray player, (and it says the player is capable of adding it), but it's the only disc I have that wants more memory, so I'm just not watching that version unless I find out that it's worth the trouble of finding out how to upgrade the player.
I don't know if we have the same DVD set, but the set that I bought is listed as "Extended Blu-Ray Collector's Edition" with the "original theatrical version, special edition re-release & all-new 3-hour collector's extended cut with 16 minutes of additional footage". It also includes an "Alternate Opening", and "8 hours of never before seen material including over 45 minutes of deleted scenes and more".

I watched Escape From New York for one of the HoFs here, and it was okay, but it had no chance to make my list.
I considered Guardians of the Galaxy for my list, but I didn't want to include too many superhero movies, so it didn't make my list either.

No, not really. It's obviously a joke. I wouldn't vote for the same movie 5 times. (I don't know if Nope would've even accepted such a list.)
Although (tell you a secret) ... 2 of those in that list were on my list of 25!
And yeah, I think Wrath of Khan (at least) will definitely be in the top 25.
And yes, I know Rules and I are among the very few who really like ST-TMP.

GBG - this is actually surprising.
I would have thought for sure that Sheldon, if anyone, being the anal-retentive uber-nerd that he is, would have argued for TMP being the best. It's by far the most scientific, the most cerebral, and the most classically science fiction. And he would've really disliked IV for being too comedic (we all know Sheldon has no sense of humor).
In summation - I think this was terribly out of character for Sheldon.

Oh! And Sheldon says that 1 failed on music?
That theme music by Jerry Goldsmith was adopted by The Next Generation to be used throughout it's entire 7 year history and in some of their movies too. None of the other Trek movie's theme music could make a claim like that.

If 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris had a baby it would be Star Trek the Motion Picture!
Makes me wonder if the original Solaris will make the list (you'd have to be some kind of nut to put that on your top 25 list!) I could see maybe the remake (with that dreamy but politically obtuse George Clooney), but that 1972 Russian weirdness with 10 minutes of watching a Japanese highway? Please!

Oh, and as a Star Trek fan, I must say that The Motion Picture has one of the best scores ever put to film. To bad the movie itself is the cinematic equivalent of a silent fart in an elevator. Quiet, dull, and slowly suffocating you.

I agree. It's weird enough and has a cult following, and since the MoFo is a very cultured crowd... I mean, look where they put Avatar. It's obvious that the sci-fi contingent of the MoFo does not represent your "general audience" demographic. :)
I just better not see any Transformers movies show up at this point!
The Original Solaris with 1972 "Russian weirdness with 10 minutes of watching a Japanese highway" (it's more like three or four minutes or if you're right it didn't feel like that to me) will make the countdown, and not to ruin things but it may or may not have been high on mine.
Great movie
Stalker will make it too.

Although I have many issues with it Avatar Is My 23rd Film From my list. One can argue many things but what is clear about the movie is that it sure is a sci fi movie. And one of the biggest Science Fiction movies all time.

Indeed. The dwarf scene really freaked me out.
My weird experience with Solaris was, upon first viewing I hated it - like, it's weirdness really started to make me angry because I had sought out a good sci-fi film that evening, but then I kept falling asleep during it.
The following week I kept thinking about it and feeling compelled to watch it again, which I did.

I would've put Apollo 13 on my list, but it isn't sci-fi.
My only problem with Gravity is that my pal Rules doesn't like Sandra Bullock (and it's got that dreamy but politically obtuse George Clooney). ;)
Gravity will make it. I think if we made this in 2014 it would have been very high but the enthusiasm for it has seemed to die down. Don't see it making the top 25, most like top 40 or so though.

Another great list of MoFo (thanks Nope). You've chosen excellent pics for each movie, it catches the eyes at first glimpse.
The Incredibles, I watched it a long time ago and didn't feel anything afterwards. But then, I'm not really into family movies -being myself a stone cold heart. But I think The Incredibles doesn't have anything to do with Sci-Fi: must we put any story that is unreal into this category??
Looper, I liked it after watching, but now I couldn't remember much of it. Guess that's saying something. A good movie, but not too memorable.
The Truman Show, really good movie but I don't know if it's SciFi either. It's very real.
Gravity and Avatar, someone here said they were "experience movies" and I couldn't have put it better. Nothing special in story and characters, but a fun ride and a great experience. A feast to your (visual) imagination. They deserve to be watched in cinema. On TV, it'll just be a waste of time.
Haven't seen Dune yet, and ain't intrigued to. On the other hand, Another Earth, Altered States, Galaxy Quest and Dredd look good, I'll add them to my want-to. That's the good point of Lists like this, they broaden my scope.
Edit: None of these want-to are on Netflix! :frustrated::frustrated::(

This film was tied both points and lists with La Jetée and another film. The highest placement that Signs received was a 5th place, and both La Jetée and the mystery film received higher placements, so Signs was last in the three way tie breaker.

The first short film to make the list! Like I said, this was tied with Signs and another mystery film with 71 points and 5 lists. La Jetée's highest placement was 3rd place, so it was able to beat out Signs, but not the mystery film, so it ended up in the middle.

La Jetée is the third entry from my list to show up, I had it in 3rd. I think that it is a genius film, and I really think it should have been higher.
My List:
3: La Jetée
12: Donnie Darko
13: The Truman Show
I was the one who had La Jetee at 24. It's difficult to compare short and full length films or it could've been higher but yeah it's great. I also like Signs quite a bit. Some of it is pretty dumb but it's entertaining, might be my favourite Shyamalan.
My List:
16.Wreck-It Ralph
24.La Jetee

73. Men In Black (1997)

Signs, added to my must-watch list. I like M. Night Shyamalan in general, but some friend just told me that Signs was bad. Now you changed my mind. I also like Mel Gibson for that matter (both as actor and director).
I'm one of those who like Terminator (1 & 2) much more than The Matrix. The latter just feels more modern, more nowadays, that's all.
Chypmunk: I'm sure Men in Black (1, and hopefully 3) will show up somewhere in the list. I still remember the fun of watching them.
I liked the first half of Signs, but it lost me in the second half. (And let's face it, the "twist" is the dumbest thing ever.) No room for La Jetee. I never considered Escape from New York, but I'm glad it made the countdown. Guardians of the Galaxy is fun, but that's it. Still nothing from my list has shown up yet, and I think it's looking like the six I was uncertain had a chance are not going to appear. What's wrong with you people?!

I do still like it more than most of Shyamalan's other films though. Like Kaplan, I like the first half of the movie a lot more than the second half.

I used to really like Signs (possibly even to the point of being a favourite) but I've not seen it in a fair few years now and as I wasn't able to squeeze in a rewatch prior to submitting I didn't consider it.
Not seen La Jetee but as someone that loves 12 Monkeys I've been meaning to give it a shot at some point for quite a while now

Haven't seen La Jetée so didn't vote for it. Signs is a movie I love, but also didn't vote for it, just to make room for others. And I'm totally fine with the twist. I know people say "Why would aliens invade a planet with water when they're allergic to it?" Well, I say, maybe they come from a place that doesn't have water and they don't know it hurts them. I understand Sci-Fi is better when part of it is based in reality, but, in the end, it's still Sci-Fi and not everything has to be scientifically logical, at least to me. That'w where the fiction part of Science Fiction comes in. I mean, I accepted that aliens were invading our planet in the movie, why wouldn't I accept that water hurts them? For all I know they just discovered that it hurt them when they came here, but by then they were already invested in the invasion and weren't going to back down. I know M. Night's character in the movie tells Mel that the aliens are staying away from bodies of water, but it doesn't mean they knew it was bad for them when they came our way. Anyway, again, either way, I was completely invested in the end, so water hurting them was just a small, um, drop in the bucket for me..

Well it says Sci-Fi on IMDB :p
Thor is easily one of the best MCU films in my opinion and is the only one that came close to making my list but didn't. My favorite "superhero" film in general is Kick Ass, which doesn't have any super beings in it and isn't sci-fi or it'd be on my list.
It's sci-fi. You may recall that Thor said that Asgardian powers are part science and part magic. The rainbow "Bifrost" bridge is a piece of technology - you can even see hints of circuitry in it. There's some discussion of wormholes and such.

I didn't vote for it, but World on a Wire is Rainer Werner Fassbinder's super-cool four-hour virtual reality epic mini-series which was not only the first film of its kind that I know of, but also one of the most-realistic with basically no reliance on F/X. It has many veterans from other Fassbinder films, but Klaus Löwitsch really shines as a sort of Bogart character who has to track down what's going on with all the mysterious deaths and disappearances occurring as the world and he, himself, seem to go crazy. Fassbinder's meticulous direction keeps the image full of mirrors, TV screens and doppelgangers and other clues and misdirects at every turn. It certainly improves with each viewing. It's on TCM occasionally and Criterion. Fantastic Planet is a trip but another I didn't vote for.

God, this countdown is so boring. :data:
Maybe we need more debate.
Such as: where do we draw the line regarding what classifies as sci-fi when it comes to dystopian futures. For instance, most people wouldn't call The Road (2009) sci-fi, especially since no explanation is given as to the state of this near future and we are left to assume it could be any number of cataclysmic scenarios. But is The Road really much different than Mad Max: Road Warrior (1981 - and its sequels)?
Does a dystopian future only become sci-fi if it involves some level of technology or a scientific explanation on how it became dystopian? If humanity is cast backwards to where there is no usable technology, and the reasons for it are unclear, is it sci-fi?
God, this countdown is so boring. :data:

Kind of similar with me and other countdown categories (as mentioned a couple days ago). But sci-fi is one I feel more than acquainted with - which is why I keep getting surprised at films showing up that I've never even heard of (like World on a Wire).

I liked The Time Machine but not nearly enough to vote for it.
Snowpiercer is the 4th movie to show that I haven't seen, and I'm not really interested in it.
I remember being quite impressed by The Prestige but I've not seen it since my initial viewing not long after its release. Logan's Run is spectacularly dated but there was still a little bit of campy fun to be had with it. I'm amazed that a remake of it still hasn't come along. Snowpiercer was decent but underwhelming at the same time; woud like to give it the benefit of a rewatch though. And The Time Machine I actually watched for this countdown. For an older film it's ok but didn't think it was anything special. I did however love all the little time lapse sequences that represented the time travelling.

I cant believe John Spartan did not know how to use the three seashells? :)
Will there be films on this list that are more intelligent than Demoliton Man? Yes. Will there be films on this list that have more emotional depth to them than Demolition Man? Yes. Will there be films that use their sci-fi setting to provide a more nuanced social commentary on our current society than Demolition Man? Yes.
But!!! And Sir Mix-a-Lot will be happy because it's a very big but. But there will be very, very few films on this list that are as much fun as Demolition Man. From the first moment to the last the whole thing is just an absolute blast. Stallone proves that he can do comedy, displaying a fair degree of self-awareness along the way. While Wesley Snipes, who was being pushed as an action hero at the time, looks like he's never had more fun than as the crazed Simon Phoenix. And as Sedai pointed out, Sandra Bullock is so achingly adorable in it. And very funny. And while I may have dismissed its intelligence and social commentary in my opening paragraph it actually is quite a smart little film at times, often in a very knowing way
So does Demolition Man deserve to be on this list? Abso-f*cking-lutely!!!

Demolition Man never crossed my mind either.
Sure it's silly fun... but there's one huge fault with the entire utopian future it portrays... what is the world like outside the city? Is that city the only place left where people live?
According to the backstory given by Huxley, there was an earthquake in the area... but only that area was affected which lead to all the cities in the area being merged into San Angeles... so like, why don't the "Scraps" simply leave? How does the populous of San Angeles deal with the outside world?
Whole movie doesn't make any sense.
Think you've just put more thought into that film than anyone else has ever. haha.

This was the film that was tied with Battle Royale, but it was on one more list, so it won the tiebreaker.

District 9 was good. I was really hyped when it came out. I want to rewatch it now.

Excellent pics, MoFos. I wish I had thought about District 9 when I made my list : that movie is awesome! Blomkamp's best, by far.
I don't know if this count, but I had predicted Edge of Tomorrow a few days ago. Oh, well, at least that one was on my list at #25
