Hosted by Yours Truly, Rauldc14
We have made our way to the fifties, people! It is with great honor that I spend the next two months revealing Mofos favorite from this grand decade!
I would first like to thank those that hosted the previous countdowns. As you all know, it is a hell of a lot more work than it seems like it would be. So props to Brodinski, Harry Lime, Skepsis, Miss Vicky, Rodent, Holden Pike, Daniel M and anyone else who I've missed. And also to Daniel M who made the famous excel sheet which makes hosts lives easier, even if I had to use it on my phone only. Also thanks to the hosts of the fifties HOFs who seemed to spark interest within this decade for the countdown!
Here are some details to get us started:
-67 lists were submitted, and only four of them were partial lists. A good turnout for a decade that is over 55 years behind us. The same point totals will be used from these lists as in previous countdowns.
-Ties were broken first by how many lists they appeared on. Then, if necessary, the film with the highest ranking broke the next tie.
-352 films were included on these lists.
-Two films a day until we reach the top 10. When we get to fifty, I will have a short intermission at which point I will post the one pointers list. This is different then normal but I need extra time. I'll give the reason then :).
-one film a day once we reach the top ten. On the final day one and two will be posted.
-Do not reveal your full list until the countdown is over. Don't be that guy.
-Gongs will be partially tolerated, but there may be consequences.
-Have fun with it guys and gals!

Haven't seen either. Didn't start watching for this in earnest until close to the deadline so I didn't watch nearly as many as I might have and I pretty much stuck with well known and highly regarded films.
Good start, and nice layout Rauldc. Watched Marty, not bad. Like a 3/5 for me.

Never heard of House of Wax
I like Marty a lot, if it was a top 35 it might have been on my list, I can relate to the character in some way haha.
Thought for sure I had House of Wax on my list but I guess not. Glad it made it without me.
Thought Marty would be higher. Solid film with a great performance by Borgnine, there's few more likeable characters in film than Marty. Didn't vote for it.
Only seen the remake of House of Wax. Twas garbage.

Nice presentation Raul! I love the faded around the edges look for your top photos.
Marty...way too low! I've seen both of those and Marty almost made my list. House of Wax is great fun, but not on my list.
Just noticed i have House of Wax crossed off the horror list, must have just took it as the remake and crossed it off without thinking/looking. Think i'm going to watch it later instead of taking it off.

Thanks for doing all the graft and getting the show on the road - much appreciated!
Pretty sure I've seen Marty a long time ago, didn't get around to revisiting it. Watched House Of Wax last month (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1550045#post1550045) and it's ok but wasn't ever in contention for me.
Wasn't aware House of Wax is a Vincent Price film. Looking forward to it now.

I haven't seen House of Wax in many years. I used to like it when I was little.
I believe it was a short time before I was intentionally watching 50's movies that I happened upon Marty. I liked it ok.
Looking good Raul:)
Wonder who had Marty 4th and 5th?

I had Marty at 23. I really enjoy that film, although I haven't seen it in forever. I thought highly of Borgnines performance in it too.
Gonna guess that Nostromo had House of Wax in the 4th spot and JJ had it somewhere.
I'm pretty sure Marty was on Raul's list. I grew up watching House of Wax every time it was on TV, which was a lot. Ðèstîñy had to have that one on her list. Love the 3D effects with the paddle ball - and yes, that's Charles Bronson near the beginning of the trailer.
Marty (Delbert Mann, 1955) 3+ -Likable Oscar winner, a gentler form of Chayefsky, about a plain Bronx butcher (Ernest Borgnine - Best Actor) who tries to find romance and love before he grows too old.

While i don't love Marty i think it is probably the best example for me of a film that i can't imagine anyone hating. People who don't like old movies or prefer action or whatever may find it a bit boring, but i can't imagine anyone actually hating it. It is really charming with good performances and is funny at times. Love Marty's relationship with his friend

... Ooops (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397065/?ref_=nv_sr_1), wrong decade.
In that 2015 Halloween thread I picked House of Wax (1953) as my 50s flick to talk about. It was my #18 in here. Instead of making wax figures magically come to life like these films usually do, Vincent Price uses dead bodies instead of wax, kinda freaky. Didn't think it would make the countdown, now that it did i'll probly have like 6 movies make it from my list instead of 5!!

I've seen that, 1953 Marty with Rod Steiger from Playhouse 90. It's good, I think I liked the Ernest Borgnine a bit better. But the 1953 teleplay Marty is certainly worth a watch.

I wonder how high Ray's movies will place (if they place here it will be the first time the cinema of the country with the largest movie industry by ticket sales makes it into these countdowns). :)

I like Marty, but it's not a favorite movie for me. I consider it a good movie, but not great.
I saw House of Wax many years ago, in the movie theater, and in 3D. The most memorable part was the paddle ball scene. I remember ducking in my seat to try to avoid getting hit by the ball.
I expected both House of Wax and Marty to be higher than this on the countdown, but neither made my list.

I had The Cranes are Flying as my #24, which it appears was just enough to sneak it onto the countdown. It's a very good movie, and it was one of the biggest 50's surprises for me.
Oklahoma is the first to appear that I haven't seen, and hopefully the last. I'll watch it this week, but like Minio, I'm not overly enthused.
Minio's not a man of his word guys. That's one less role model for me.

The Cranes Are Flying was my number 13, watched it online early in June (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1525463#post1525463) and it now sits in my collection. Glad I placed it so high or it might not have made the count and that would have been a real shame.

Oklahoma! (Fred Zinnemann, 1955)
Oklahoma! probably ranks, along with The Wizard of Oz, as the film I saw on TV the most times by the time I was 12 years old. I loved that film! The beginning of the film was filmed completely outdoors, naturalistically, by Fred Zinnemann (High Noon, From Here to Eternity), and those wonderful songs at the beginning, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top" totally blew me away as a kid. Gordon MacRae, not exactly a household name nowadays, will always be significant to my family, if only for the first 20 minutes of this wonderful movie. I certainly had a crush on the object of his affections, Shirley Jones. I enjoy this film in its entirety, but sometimes it's attacked for being filmed on soundstages. Well, I agree that it is, but one of the production's greatest songs is the "Pore Jud is Daid" number with MacRae and Rod Steiger (very good after his On the Waterfront role), and that is done wonderfully on a soundstage.
Oklahoma! is awesome Americana and extremely funny. The relationships between the main characters couldn't be more realistic, no matter how outlandish they appear at first. The huge supporting cast includes the wonderful Gloria Grahame's Ado Annie ("I Can't Say No"), Gene Nelson, Charlotte Greenwood, Eddie Albert, James Whitmore, Barbara Lawrence and Jay C. Flippen. MacRae and Jones did reteam the next year for Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, which I enjoy but cannot add to this list, but I will add another by the songwriting duo next.

I watched The Cranes are Flying in preparation for the countdown and I liked it well enough to put it at #23 on my list. Definitely a poignant look at how war affects a nation through the looking Glass of one family. It's not much of a war movie as very little is in the perspective of the soldiers, but Instead those left behind.

The Cranes Are Flying
(Mikhail Kalatozov, 1957)
4
Cinematography so masterful it threatens to overshadow both the film's emotional poignancy and its potent anti-war message. It's rare for me to pay more attention to how the camera is filming something as opposed to what the camera is filming, but I was in constant awe of the cinematographer's virtuosity -- from the effortless way the camera glides above crowds without losing track of our leading lady, to the fluidity of the long handheld takes, to the gorgeous usage of shadows and light, to the striking juxtaposition between foregrounds and backgrounds, and, in particular, the manner in which the cinematography so candidly mirrors and accentuates the inner turmoil of the characters. The composition in each and every scene is utter perfection. If I was an aspiring filmmaker and not a serial-killing clown, this is a film that I would study and absorb. Also, from what little I've read online, the cultural and historical significance of the film can't be exaggerated. The Cranes Are Flying is one of the first Russian films (maybe the first?) to capture the honest, brutal ramifications of World War II. Director Mikhail Kalatozov, finally free of Stalin's artistic suffocation, put forth onto celluloid the bruised, resilient soul of a war-ravaged nation grieving more casualties than any other country. And who better to give a face to that unbearable grief than the gorgeous, sturdy Tatiana Samoilova, whose eyes alone convey an endless depth of emotion. The Cranes Are Flying is a stunning achievement on many levels, possessing a masterpiece of cinematography and an all-time great performance by a leading lady, that explores the physical and psychological shambles that war leaves on a country and its people. A powerful film. An important film. A beautiful film.

Not surprisingly, some of you guessed correctly that Oklahoma! was on my list. It's one of my favorite musicals, and it was #4 on my list. Gordon MacRae had an amazing voice, and he was wonderful in this movie. And for those of you who only know Shirley Jones as the mother on the TV show "The Partridge Family", you should see her in this movie. That TV show didn't do her singing voice any justice.

People in the 1950's could be really paranoid, thanks to the threat of atomic destruction, the Red scare and McCarthyism. So movies of that time can reflect that paranoia. None more so than 1950's Sci Fi-Horror. Many of those films aren't just about creatures attacking, often they have a biting social commentary under the main themes.

Horror and Sci-fi are my two favorite genres, which is why I had so much trouble choosing movies for this list. Between Alfred Hitchcock (I also love thrillers), and the horror/sci-fi movies, I had way too many to choose from. You should really start watching them. It's a great decade, and I'd for sure join in on that Hall of Fame.

The few Sci Fi films i watched from the decade were really good, was clearly a good time for them and i ended up voting for one. The only one i wasn't really a fan of was On The Beach.

Some Came Running was my #10!
It's a fantastic film with an overall laid back atmosphere, focusing on character instead of plot, and it has one of the most spectacular final scenes in the history of cinema.
The Blob? Well, it's a camp classic. Oh yeah - great theme song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GODDLgM1gKo
That movie they're playing in The Blob is real. I did a mini-review.
Daughter of Horror aka Dementia (John Parker, 1955) 1.5 - Here's another cult item, mostly known as the film being played at the theatre when it's attacked by The Blob (1958). This movie has no dialogue (you can hear some turned down way low for some reason) but it does have some beautifully-lit-and-composed B&W cinematography which makes it almost worth watching. Then Ed McMahon(!) turns up as a scary narrator to explain the lunacy which passes for a plot. If you just watch it as a silent movie, the visuals and a couple of weird scenes may hold your attention for the hour running time but it's really not that good.
Some Came Running (Vincente Minnelli, 1958) 3 http://madisoncamerunning.com/Gallery2/SCRITAL.JPG
I don't know what to say here... Minnelli is one of the most interesting directors in Hollywood history. his forte (pronounced "fort") seemed to be the musical (Meet Me in St. Louis, Gigi, An American in Paris, Cabin in the Sky, The Band Wagon, Brigadoon, The Pirate, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (yes, even you, Jack Nicholson!), but he also punched out romantic comedies (Father of the Bride, Designing Woman, The Reluctant Debutante), as well as some of the most colorful and flamboyant melodramas (Lust For Life, Home From the Hill, The Bad and the Beautiful, Madame Bovary, The Sandpiper AND Some Came Running). This film is pretty much all fake in a cinema-sorta way, but the lighting is always spectacular and in-your-face. Thus it's basically Minnelli's impressionistic follow-up to what he thought happened in the same author's From Here to Eternity. Although Sinatra's Maggio died in the earlier flick, his alter ego writer showed up in this one.

Not surprisingly, some of you guessed correctly that Oklahoma! was on my list. It's one of my favorite musicals, and it was #4 on my list.
I never heard of Oklahoma! until like two months ago. However, here, we found the guilty person! Number 4?!
Guilty, and proud of it. :D
Oklahoma! was almost #3 on my list. It flipped up and down with another movie a few times before I sent in my list. One final rewatch of both movies on the last day made the final decision for me.

I saw The Blob in many years ago, but I didn't rewatch it for this list because I knew it had no chance of making my list. It's a good movie for it's time, but it's not a favorite for me.
Some Came Running is a great movie, and I considered it for my list, but I just couldn't find room for it. :( (So many great musicals and Hitchcock movies in the '50's left too few spots for a lot of other great movies. )

watched the blob a couple years ago and i don't think it's very good. not horrible or anything, but it's just sorta boring and dumb. i came very close to watching some came running for the list but it was a little bit harder to find than some others so i didn't get to it. i imagine i would love it. i think i remember reading somewhere it was one of richard linklater's favorite movies or something.

Im sorry but for me i was more into monster classic horror. While the blob is sure something not normal. I just gravitated near Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man, King Kong Godzilla. Anything Harryhousen. While have Hithcock movies high i was never really into as i call suspence horror. Or really any early alien movie much. except for a special few.

I watched The Blob several years ago, liked it, but I think I prefer the 1988 remake.
Haven't seen Some Came Running. Vincente Minnelli is a director I keep meaning to explore. I've only seen two from him so far: Meet Me in St. Louis and The Bad and the Beautiful, both of which are very good.

Also forgot to say that I really like Marty.
It's a perfect character study of a lonely middle aged man being subtly pushed by himself and the people around him to maintain that loneliness. It's definitely a film with a lot of truth to it and that's probably why it became so popular. Its themes are still very relevant today.

Once I used to post my reviews and ratings with these countdowns, but I've admittedly been slacking lately...

100. Marty (1955)
http://www.wgal.com/image/view/-/19227370/highRes/2/-/124iu5b/-/OTD-March-13---Betsy-Blair-jpg.jpg
A sweet and tender little love story about the real life fairy tale of the beast and the beast - not that these are ugly people - but they are not the glamerous Hollywood couple or the wealthy happy bunch. These are two people who are completely ordinary, with ordinary looks and ordinary lives, who just can't seem to fit in with everybody else - until they find each other. I liked that unpolished aspect of it, although I did wish for a little more unbalance as well. In a way, the story is very straight forward and it kind of calls for a turning point somewhere, but the closest we get to that is when the movie ends. In a way, the usual downpoint for our characters doesn't come 2/3 into the film, like usually, but is already build into the fundament from the beginning and we work its way up from there. The good thing about that is how things feel a bit off-beat and bold, but at the same time it's a little simple and shallow. The movie is missing a little more depth and some more layers, as well as some changes in the flow of the story... at least if this should be a masterpiece.
But as it stands now, it is a fun film, free from its own ego and told losely and warmly. Sometimes I don't mind when a film just wants to be an episodic and extended point in our life, because sometimes that point has a point of its own that is worthy of being told on the big screen. There is enough for us to understand what came before and what will most likely come after, so it's not that the story isn't complete. It's quite simply short in scale and grand in genuineness. Sometimes it's enough to feel the film without having to read the film and 'Marty' is completely lovable as it is. The visuals are subtle but not at all simple and the music is light on its feet without being without weight or matter. In a way, the soundtrack goes perfectly hand in hand with how the two main characters goes hand in hand with their parents and lives. They are nervous and good hearted people who are still attached to the safer surroundings of their closest family and familiar territories. They are not exactly immature - in fact far from it - and they are not infant minds or inferior human beings. But they have a youthful fragileness to them; a sweet and humble spirit about them, which the soundtrack catches nicely. It is almost like if the lullaby was suddenly a love tune... dreamy and innocent in its own way... kind of like our two main characters.*
And what wonderful acting from those two - especially Betsy Blair spoke to me. She was like her own little light and her smile made that light shine even brighter. She looked like someone that couldn't even hurt a fly and together with Ernest Borgnine's big and warm character their magic just flew off the screen. Short, sweet, simple and wonderful. I enjoyed this one plenty.
3.5
99. House of Wax 3.5
No write up for this, but I remember it to be a fun time. Paris Hilton was so good in this!
Kidding, kidding.... Mr. Price was priceless though, as always, and I loved the atmosphere and style of it. This was a 3D film too, wasn't it? I think I came to seek this one out partly because I wanted to see it in 3D. And I was surprised how the movie was actually good enough on its own too.
98. The Cranes are Flying - sounds really interesting; might see this one soon...
97. Oklahoma - doesn't really interest me tbh.
96. The Blob - the remake interest me more, but I still wanna see it.
95. Some Came Running - might like this one. I'll check it out.

Correct. I had it at 22. What drives the film is the atmosphere and the performance of Eleanor Parker, an actress that I seem to think could be a favorite of the classic period for me.
So that's two for me with Marty and Caged. Sadly these are the only two I have seen, but I hope to get to a few of these Thursday and Friday as well.

I saw Caged during the 50s HoF. I didn't really care for it at all, and it didn't come close to making my list. Here was my write up for it during the HoF:
Caged
I still am not quite sure what to think after watching this film. It was quite a roller coaster of quality for me. The beginning lacked, then the middle it started to pick up, only to finish blandly. The biggest problem this film had was that it was just kind of boring. Some of the performances were laughable at points, and it prevented me from taking the film seriously. The only actor who I though gave a decent performance was the warden of the prison. The best character by far was kitty (the actual kitten, not the inmate). The villain seemed a bit to maniacal and "mustache-twisty" for me, and I didn't think her motives were very clear. A lack of good characters and performances really held the film back, and overall I thought it was pretty mediocre. Sorry CR, at least I enjoyed Lady Killer.
2.5+
Ps. Did anyone else notice that the blonde inmate was played by the same actress from Ace in the Hole? Cool coincidence huh?

I give a 👍 to both Caged and The Human Condition Part I. I can't find anything significant I wrote here about them although I found my thoughts for Parts II & III of the latter. Caged wasn't the first women's prison movie, but all the scenes showing the corruption of innocence are in place - yes, even lesbian come-ons from those in charge. The Human Condition is a strong anti-war epic, but I don't think the first part is the best.
