Witness For the Prosecution I had at #7 on my list. Love it, especially Laughton and Lanchester's relationship in the film. :)
So Wild Strawberries came in at #23 eh? Well, it came in at #23 on my list also. Very moving film for me and probably my second favorite Bergman. My other favorite is from another decade.
Both were on my list. Witness was my #14 and Wild Strawberries was my #10. Don't think i've written about either on the site before and i don't have the time right now, needless to say they are excellent.
My List - 8/25
04.Night and Fog
09.A Place in the Sun
10.Wild Strawberries
14.Witness For The Prosecution
15.An Affair To Remember
17.Throne of Blood
19.From Here To Eternity
23.Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Another great set and both made my list. Wild Strawberries, my number 5, is one of my favourite Bergman and Witness was my number 8. Charles Laughton at his very very best although his Hobsons Choice could also have easily made my list too.
That's 66/78 for me and 13 from my list.
Are we going to get another Bergman?

I didn't vote for either, even if Wild Strawberries is in the mafo MoFo 100. I wrote this in response to Daniel thinking Witness for the Prosecution was over-the-top and the ending was ridiculous.
To be fair, I normally don't pay too much attention to story details, especially when the plot of what Christie writes is pretty much beyond Wilder's control, especially if the direction is good, and from what I remember it was. I just remember going in expecting a masterpiece, and maybe I was in a bad mood that day, certain twists just seemed to rub me up the wrong way. It's something I'd watch again in the future and maybe like a lot more, my Mum's a big Agatha Christie fan so she'd probably enjoy it, so I could watch it with her sometime.

I was so expecting Searchers after Rio Bravo for some reason.
Mr Minio

Rio Bravo was a pretty good film, but a little bit of a letdown anyway after so much "masterpiece!" cries I heard for all these years I haven't seen it. I eventually ended up giving it a 4.0, but it may as well be a strong 3.5 film. There are better westerns. Even classical westerns.
I guess I have to rewatch Tokyo Story and then possibly I will even rate it 5.0. I still prefer some other Ozu films (including 3 from the 50's), but it's a masterpiece nevertheless.
Rio Bravo is a film which elicits great love from its fans. I think more of it now than I once did - I'll even watch it every time it's on if there isn't something else I haven't seen. But I still don't see why so many people find it so cool or something to "hang out" with (other than my having it on in the background ), and I grew up with it. I guess I don't belong to the cult of Hawks, even if I think he's a good director and the auteur theory makes watching films more interesting and significant. Most of those comments could probably apply to Ozu's Tokyo Story, often most people's entryway to Ozu. Most people know that Ozu's technique is deceptively simple and that many of his films are about the everyday lives and worries of families, yet all his movies tend to explore their themes in profound, meaningful ways. Needless to say, they weren't on my list.
I had Rio Bravo all the way down at #24, which means eleven of mine have shown up already, with eleven more to show up in the top 20.
My List:
6. Pickup on South Street (#72)
8. Mon Oncle (#67)
11. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (#37)

2. Tokyo Story (#21)
3. Top 5

I expected Tokyo Story to be higher. I suppose it is pleebs like me who find Ozu pretty light fare that it's not. It was hanging on to the last few on my list for a bit but ended up being a late cut.
Rio Bravo is on my list of shame. Hope to get to it soon.

I think I had Tokyo Story at #12.
So Pickpocket isn't going to make it huh? I had it high.
Only seen Tokyo Story. I was a bit underwhelmed but did like it.
Not seen Rio Bravo, looking forward to it though as i've really liked the 3 Hawks films i've seen. Tokyo Story was my #7. I wrote this about it:
Tokyo Story - 8.5/10
Woah very powerful film, I came very close to crying at a film for the first time in ages. Quite a bit of it resonated with me. I think everyone is a little guilty of neglecting certain loved ones once we start building our own lives. At times it was a little hard to watch the parents being spoken about, passed around, treated like an inconvenience, etc. Even though it clearly wasn't done out of malice. I think this shows Oz us power as a storyteller that he can make such a simple story seemingly mean so much.
Setsuko Hara was delightful, it was nice to see her character pay so much attention, take days off work, etc to spend time with her in laws when their biological children never made the same effort. It was also touching that she felt she was being selfish, as she was lonely. Anyway fantastic film, completely deserving of its big reputation IMO. Looking forward to more from Ozu think I'll watch Late Spring in the next few days.
My List - 10/25

I really ought to get around to Tokyo Story (and Ozu in general) at some point. Rio Bravo was another that was played a lot in my childhood but has not been revisited as an adult (I'm not big into westerns if you can't tell) and was therefore never in with a shot for me.

I voted for Tokyo Story. It was my number 7. And if I had to be objective in how good a film is (and not just by favorite) Tokyo Story is easily one of the top 10 films I have ever seen.
My List: 11
Seen: 34/80
1. Easy top ten, top 5 more then likely. Possible Top 3. Number 1 maybe?
2. Ben-Hur (1959)
3. I would hope Top 10
4. Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
5. Rififi (1955)
6. If this does not make the Top 10 I will quit the internet
7. Tokyo Story (1953)
8. The Ten Commandments (1956)
9. I doubt it will show up.
10. The Killing (1956)
11. Sansho the Baliff (1954)
12. This will make it.
13. Throne of Blood (1957)
14. Hidden Fortress (1958)
15. Sleeping Beauty (1959)
16. I doubt this will show. If it was, it would have shown up by now,
17. See above
18. Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
19. This will show. It is by one of the two directors who will dominate this list.
20. This will make it. WAY too many people love this movie for it not to show.
21. This damn well better make it!
22. No show
23. Not gonna show
24. Sadly not going to show
25. No 1 pointer for me. This will make it. I know it will.

Where have all you people been who have not seen Rio Bravo. Its on AMC once a year when they do John Wayne Weekend. I will however confess that Eldorado which is much like Rio Bravo I do prefer too watch. Its a bit more action packed then Rio Bravo. But Walter Brennan, Dean Martin and Angie made Bravo far better in later viewings.

Rio Bravo was my number one film, if you all haven't worked that out already. I've wrote bits and bobs about it around the forum but nothing too substantial. I think the themes and how it fits in to the body of work of Hawks are pretty straightforward and evident once you've seen it a couple of times, or watched a few Hawks films, but it just really is one of those films that is just so great for me in that its just such a fun experience. I mentioned just above that it seems to be on TV quite often over here actually, even though I own it now, I always record it when I can and give it a watch.
The perfect film about masculine companionship, I love John Wayne as an actor, and Dean Martin both in and out of films has to be one of the coolest men to have ever lived, add a perfectly cast, equally cool Ricky Nelson in to the mix, a sprinkle of humour with Walter Brennan and a nice romantic angle with Angie Dickinson and you have a dream cast. I could watch these people hang around the prison for hours upon hours, the two and a half of the film really do fly by.
Here's probably the most I've wrote about it, and about my overall love the Howard Hawks' films:
Rio Bravo and my love for Howard Hawks
I went out last night as it was a bank holiday weekend. Spent too much and drank too much, so today I've been mainly recovering, and I noticed that TCM had Rio Bravo on, so of course I watched it. I think it's probably my fourth full viewing, but I've seen it in parts even more.
http://derekmalcolm.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/rio-bravo-002.png
I actually bought a framed poster type of thing for the film recently. It's a film I consider to be one of my very favourites. I think I first watched it probably because of Tarantino's praise for it, when I was getting into films his opinion meant a lot and I tried to check out whatever he recommended. I thought it was great back then, and I think it was in the top 30 of my first ever top 100, but back then I had knew nothing of the great director Howard Hawks, really.
Earlier this year I watched a lot of films from Hawks, and I now consider him to be one of my favourite directors. I also love that a lot of other members here seem to be watching more of his films over the past year, and I hope that when it comes around that Rio Bravo will do really well in the Fifties countdown.
Watching it today only further strengthens my thoughts towards it, a masterpiece of cinema. I love the laid back feel of the whole thing, through watching more of his works I've discovered how Hawks loves to create pictures about companionship and masculinity, there's always a leisurely feel about his films with nothing flashy about his direction, mainly medium shots and cuts only when they're needed. Despite the humour there's always a darkness luring and the characters come to prove themselves through their actions, often through violence.
A few weeks ago I watched The Big Sky late night on TV when I was staying with my grandparents. Another great Hawks film that once again focuses on masculinity through violence. I think the most unusual thing about it is how it uses its landscape to emphasis the darkness looming over the characters. I also think the black and white photography of Only Angels Have Wings goes quite a long way in creating a mysterious mythical atmosphere that seems to consume the characters.
Here's how I would rank Howard Hawks' films, approximately:
Rio Bravo
Only Angels Have Wings
Ceiling Zero
El Dorado
His Girl Friday
Hatari!
The Big Sky
The Big Sleep
Scarface
Red River
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Bringing Up Baby
Rio Lobo
Although the rankings don't mean much, as I think they're pretty much great, except for Rio Lobo. I watched that film the other week too, on TCM, and whilst I still enjoyed it, it felt like a pale imitation of Rio Bravo. El Dorado surprised me with just how great it was, Mitchum and Caan were brilliant, and in terms of laughs I found it to be a really funny screenplay, Rio Lobo's supporting cast was all weak and there was nothing memorable about it, I thought the beginning and end scenes were the best parts.
Also, I just remembered that my brother recently bought Rio Bravo on Blu-ray (part of a Westerns collection), he loves the film too, although he hasn't seen many other Howard Hawks films. You'll notice I ranked Ceiling Zero really high on the list, I actually bought that on DVD earlier on this year when I was on my Hawks spree. I noticed it was hard to get and the copy I have is a French DVD with the title "Brumes" actually, but it's a perfectly fine copy. Not many people seem to have seen it but I think it's one of his best, it feels more intimate and personal. Like Only Angels Have Wings it focusses on flying, masculinity through these high risk jobs, friendship, honour etc., in both films the endings are extremely sad and moving, throughout there is an impending feeling of doom that comes with the joy of these men enjoying themselves.
What has everyone else seen from Howard Hawks? What are your favourite films of his? Is Rio Bravo a favourite of yours and do you see it doing well on the Fifties list?
I later watched Monkey Business which I also thought was a great little comedy, and I included it near the bottom of my list (sorry for the spoiler, but I might as well mention it now as its relevant) but I knew that wouldn't make it.
If bluedeed had sent a list I'd guess he'd have it in at least his top ten, which could have perhaps boosted it a bit. It's also, as I mention above, one of my brother's favourites films. Overall I think 22nd is a good ranking for it, had this list been done a few years ago it probably would have been in the bottom half, I would guess.
The framed poster that I mentioned I bought in the quoted post, I managed to sneak in to my own short film I'm releasing soon (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=46492) (bit of a plug, but most have you have seen anyway :p) as a way of showing my admiration for the film. Here's a screenshot, with it, and it's my brother in the photo :D

So Touch of Evil made the top 20? It made my #3.
You can keep your Citizen Kanes's and your Magnificant Ambersons's, Touch Of Evil is Big Orson's masterpiece.
I mean .... come on!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg8MqjoFvy4
Touch of Evil was a tad disappointing. I liked it but it is my least favourite of the five Welles films i've seen so far. I really should rewatch it though as i said in my write up for it i was having trouble concentrating during the first half so it could've been my fault.
Woah. Way off on Streetcar, i thought it'd be top 10. I had it at #13. My short writeups for both of them.
Touch of Evil (1958) - 3.5-
https://s31.postimg.org/ovh159v9n/evil.jpg (https://postimage.org/)
Good film, it is my least favourite out of the five Welles films i've seen so far. That surprised me i thought there was a good chance of this challenging Citizen Kane for my favourite since it really looked my type of film. The main thing was that i was really bored during the first half, i'm not sure why exactly i just found myself not following it properly because i was struggling to say interested. Thankfully it really picked up during the second half and overall i'd say i enjoyed it, loved the ending. Welles was the highlight for me, he played the slimy, scumbag police captain perfectly.
A Streetcar Named Desire - 8/10
Liked this alot. I remember someone saying Brando here was the finest male performance they have seen, not quite sure if i agree with that but i did think he was fantastic and it is now my favourite performance of his, pretty surprising that he was the only one not to win an Oscar as i thought he was the best then again i haven't seen The African Queen/ Vivien Leigh was also very good, i loved her nervous, nutty character, she was certainly pretty over the top but i felt it fit her relationship with Stanley and Mitch in particular and the story. I also really liked the script. I'm aware it is based on a play so it did come across a bit stagey and unrealistic which is sometimes a problem for me but i loved it here. Some random lines of no importance really cracked me up. "We'll wait til she's through soaking in the tub then i'll inquire if she is acquainted with the Napoleonic Code". :D
Anyway yeah great film, will be in consideration for my 50's list.

Touch Of Evil was my #22, Streetcar my #3. Both are anchored by those larger than life performances and an excellent atmospheric setting. Streetcar has that script that just makes it one of the all time greats. The writing couldn't be better. I added it to my top ten after seeing it just a couple months ago. It might not stick forever but I wouldn't be upset if it did. Bound to be a favorite forever. So damn good.

I forgot to say that I also had Tokyo Story in the middle of my list somewhere. Touch of Evil was around the same area, too. Both of them are examples of master filmmakers on top form.
Didn't have A Streetcar Named Desire on my list, but I watched it recently and thought it was very good, didn't love it though.

Elia Kazan is one of my favorite directors, if not the favorite. Streetcar Named Desire is amazing and I really need to see that one again.

Touch Of Evil is the definite Orson Welles masterpiece, should be regarded as Citizen Kane is, purely masterful. A Streetcar Named Desire didn't do all to much for me. It's hard not to be affected by the last act obivously, but prior to that it just felt like the film was running around in circles.

Although neither made my list, I can see their classic status. I much prefer Touch of Evil. I can watch that one again and again and find new things to love about it. But Streetcar, for me, is an unrelenting bleak affair, that although with fantastic acting, is a movie I probably will not watch again. Still, I expected them to be on the list, which gives me hope for my picks that remain.

I came very close to listing King Creole as my 25th movie. I mean it's directed by Michael Curtiz and has some of the best songs Elvis ever did in a movie Add to that, it has on location scenes in New Orleans and it's more edgy than he's latter films. It's a good flick.

Yep, but it wouldn't be at all surprising if it did at all. Come to think about it its one of the most popular films on the forum, seen by a lot, liked by pretty much everyone who has, seemingly more accessible and less polarising. It's like if Movie Forums rated films like Rotten Tomatoes it'd be close to 100%.

The Searchers was my #21!Here was my original review from my review thread:
THE SEARCHERS
http://www.dograt.com/WordPress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Searchers.png
I am going to start off this review by saying that I think John Wayne is one of, if not the most overrated actor of all time. He always gives a stilted performance, he stumbles through his lines, and he delivers them with no emotion. But even though I don't like John Wayne, that doesn't mean I don't find his films enjoyable.
The Searchers is about a Civil War veteran who returns home to his family, only for them to be murdered soon after. He and his adopted nephew then go on a mission to find his kidnapped niece. What follows is the greatest cowboys vs indians tale ever put to film. One of the greats things about this movie is its use of landscape. Almost every single shot is absolutely breathtaking, and it is by far the most beautiful Texas has ever looked in a film. Even though the dialog can be awkward at points, I still think it is a very good screenplay that has moments of genuine humor and heart. Most of this heart comes from the love B-story that occurs in between the scenes of action. So while the landscape and cinematography made The Searchers a great western. The screenplay kept it from being boring.
The biggest problem I have with this film is no doubt the acting. I already told you that I hate John Wayne, but everyone else also gives a below par performance. The acting was either way too serious, or way too comedic and silly. For example, Jeffrey Hunter (Martin) gave a very over the top performance, while Ward Bond (The Rev.) gave such a silly performance that I couldn't take him seriously even when I was supposed to.
I used to think that once you've seen one western, you've seen them all, but this film proved me wrong. It was unique, entertaining, and most importantly, fun. If you like westerns, watch this film, luckily John Wayne didn't ruin it.

The Searchers was on my list, I think it was around 8th. A fantastic film, one of John Ford's many masterpieces. Seen it a few times now and it seems more beautiful on each viewing.
The 400 Blows is a very good film, but I don't share the absolute love for it that a lot of people do on here. I find the story of Truffaut, his upbringing, his relationship with Brazin, and all the writing/clips I've seen about him much more powerful and personal than the film itself, which seems odd. Maybe I'll love it when I watch it again.

The Searchers was the best film of the 1950s. ;)
I can remember being told about it long before seeing the movie, around the age of 10 and already weaned on Bonanza, The High Chaparral, Champion The Wonder Horse and Maverick. The Leone Westerns came next in my Horse Opera initiation because Ford's classic rarely showed up on TV.
"This had better be pretty effing good" I thought, being quite a sweary 12 year old.
It was good.
Gone was the John Wayne, whose death was still pretty recent, who ambled around good-naturedly for a couple of hours, shooting the occasional varmint and always getting the girl. Ethan Edwards is a racially intolerant, bitter old soldier (with hindsight, probably stricken by PTSD) who spends years on his quest fuelled by a mixture of hate, regret, guilt and unrequited love. His search gives him a place in a world which couldn't care less about him.
He's a conflicted man, and the casting of a great American movie hero in the role was perfect.
I love The Searchers and I'm glad a few other MoFos feel the same. :)

I guess I will have to rewatch The Searchers at some point. I didn't like it that much. I didn't like The 400 Blows the first time I saw it, neither, but the second time I absolutely loved it, so there's hope the same will happen with The Searchers, because it's the only Ford film I didn't like so far.
Seen and liked both movies but neither made my list.
Seen: 34/84
List: 11/25
If i counted right then i've seen 42/84. Don't remember all of the remaining 16 off the top of my head but i think i've seen them all, at most i haven't seen 1 or 2. So 56-58/100 should be about how much i've seen.
Yeah there's two i haven't seen; Ikiru and Paths of Glory so 56/100.
Here's a no doubt wrong guess at the top 16. The films are right but the order obviously won't be.:
01.Vertigo
02.Rear Window
03.12 Angry Men
04.North By Northwest
05.Seven Samurai
06.Sunset Blvd.

11.Singing In The Rain
12.Paths of Glory
13.The Bridge On The River Kwai

16.Ikiru

I hope Singin' in the Rain ends up in the top 10, I don't want to generalise too much but hopefully some of the older members who don't post as much as some other members included it high up on their list.
I think the top 7 you have Camo will all be in the top ten, then the six films from 8 to 13 will fight for the three remaining places.
The Searchers and 400 Blows were both goid to me, but nothing more. Ford is one of those directors that I think is fine, I don't dislike anything I have seen. I'm not loving anything either though. Just meh.

I think the top 7 you have Camo will all be in the top ten, then the six films from 8 to 13 will fight for the three remaining places.
Singing in the Rain definitey has a great shot. I agree with the 8-13 thing. I'm pretty surprised that Kurosawa has 3 in the top 16. Especially Ikiru, as i said i've not seen it it's just that i don't hear it talked about that often here, Not more than films like Rio Bravo and Streetcar at least. Not saying it is a bad thing of course just a bit surprising.
Concerning Ikiru, don't underestimate the power of the HOF here. As we get to less watched decades and genres it is obvious they play a large role. Which drives Mark crazy I am sure.
I didn't even know it was in a HOF.

I didn't even know it was in a HOF.
2nd 50's one. I'm glad too. It made my list. By far my fave Kurosawa so far. Seven Samurai and Rashomon are good but I didn't love them. Those three and High And Low are what I have seen.

Oh, cool. Don't think i checked that HOF much. Kurosawa, Scorsese and Hitchock are my favourite directors so far. Think i've seen something like 10-12 so far from him but not Ikiru. I want to, admittedly the cancer puts me off a bit. That's something i just can't deal with in media, almost didn't watch Breaking Bad because of it.

The Searchers was my 10th Film On My List and My Second Duke Film. I was very close too putting the Quiet Man on my list and kinda wish I had for the Fight Scene in it alone.

Hmm, that's very interesting. I don't know whether to recommend it now or not. It's pretty emotionally devestating.
I'm going to watch it at some point. It is just something i usually avoid. Heard nothing but great things and it is from one of my favourite directors so i pretty much have to.

Ikiru is a great movie. Easily one of Kurosawa's best, and by far his best film not set in the Feudal Era.

I'll take a stab at predicting the order of the remaining movies, which is definitely not based on what I hope the final order is. Except maybe Dial M for Murder, which I think is mid-level Hitchcock. I just don't get the crazy amount of love it gets. Otherwise I hope I'm very wrong with this prediction.

I think Vertigo definitely could be above Rear Window and i'd much prefer it. I think i'm mostly going off hearing quite a few say they found Vertigo boring while at times it seems like i'm the only one not in love with Rear Window. So i could see that happening, i'd be at least surprised if they weren't the top two.
I think The Searchers will be top 20 but doubt 10, maybe though. Think Singing In The Rain has a better chance than it.

This was definitely a challenging film for me. Normally I engage with a film on a emotional level by finding a character that is either good enough to root for or bad enough to root against. Here I am presented with two central characters who are both at once sympathetic and repulsive. One is a manipulative liar. The other a drunken, vicious brute. But that liar also happens to be mentally ill and has suffered some pretty traumatic things in her life. And that brute is forced to endure a houseguest who constantly looks down on him and judges him for being "common" and a "Pollack." And DAMN IS THAT BITCH ANNOYING - to the point where it's almost tempting to forgive his violence against her, but he takes it to such a disgusting level of brutality that it simply can't be forgiven.
To that end, both performances are really excellent. A young Marlon Brando brings a raw sexuality and sense of danger to the screen and makes me understand without question why Stella would be so drawn to him. (Holy crap he was hot back then!) Vivien Leigh infuses Blanche with glamour and a fragility that almost makes me forgive HOW DAMNED ANNOYING she is, but not quite. I'd be lying if I said her character didn't take away from my enjoyment of the film.
Still, it was a well made film with characters that actually had dimension and I'm glad I watched it.

Two more of mine popped. I had Orson Welles' weird, steamy border town Noir about corruption as my twenty-third choice, and the French New Wave classic that is François Truffaut's still poignant and thinly-veiled autobiography about a bright but troubled boy coming of age was in my top ten at number eight. A line from Touch of Evil has always stayed with me and echos so loudly in today's social climate here in the U.S.: "A policeman's job is only easy in a police state." True dat, Man.

It is a bit boring but there is absolutely no doubt that these are the final 16 films. Without trying to big up me and others, but I, Camo, Cricket etc. spend a lot of time in the "Rate The Last Movie" thread, "Movie Tab", and all sorts of films threads, and know what people like and don't, and these films are way too popular on this forum not to make it.

I didn't particularly like On the Waterfront, but I respected it. As I was whittling down my list towards the end, I had one open spot at #24 and two films to choose from, both of which I respected but didn't really like. Ultimately I chose On the Waterfront because Marlon Brando was hot, the leading man of the other film was not, and I'm kind of shallow like that.

Rewatch? No.
I've wanted to see more 50s era Brando ever since watching A Streetcar Named Desire. (Did I mention just how hot he was in that movie? Because DAMN was he hot!) So I added this one to the watchlist and, seeing as it's from the same director as East of Eden and has a good reputation, I had high hopes.
Unfortunately it just didn't resonate with me. It's a solid film with fine performances and it looks great but there was a distinct emotional disconnect. This was probably not helped by the fact that among its characters redeeming qualities were few and far between. Still, this is a film that I respect even if I don't particularly like it and I'm glad I gave it a shot.

On The Waterfront was my #7 - quite surprised it's not in the top ten if I'm honest.
That makes 15 of mine shown now - 2691 pts in total.
Streetcar was the only one of the last six on my list. That makes nine so far. I originally guessed I'd have 15 in the Top 100, but I'll actually have 18. I'm going to start listing my crap choices, one at a time.
Guys and Dolls (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1955)
http://www.filmlinc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/GuysandDolls11.jpg
Frank Loesser wrote the music for Guys and Dolls, and it's his most memorable collection of songs. (He also wrote the music for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Hans Christian Andersen and Where's Charley?.) Joseph L. Mankiewicz adapted the film version and chose to emphasize the theatricality of the show by filming it entirely on soundstages. At first, this may prove a bit distracting, but after awhile, it turns out to be a good idea because it plainly tells you that you're watching a Broadway-based musical, so don't worry about people singing. After all, everybody knows it's a musical, right? The basic Damon Runyon plot of gamblers getting mixed up with the Salvation Army, intertwined with a pair of romances, is solid, and it's also fun to hear the Runyon dialogue delivered by Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. Runyon's characters have a specific way of speaking which is both funny and unique.
Much has been made that the two leads can't sing, but I actually enjoy (a lot) Brando's "Luck Be a Lady" and Jean Simmons' "If I Were a Bell". Frank Sinatra has a big moment with "Adelaide" and Vivian Blaine does well with "Adelaide's Lament"; then the two get together for "Sue Me". I'm sure that everybody who ever sees this film remembers Stubby Kaye's "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat" near the end of the film.
OK. I can probably go into more detail, but I think I'm going overboard here anyway. The thing is that I have never had a problem with musicals. Growing up, they were always on the TV, and I lapped them up the same way I did my adventures, sci-fis, horrors, westerns. It never occurred to me that people singing on screen was anything stranger than people getting attacked by monsters from outer space. I find it weirder that people enjoy watching torture and dismemberment but think something's screwy when somebody sings and dances down the street. But as they say, to each, his or her own.

It's not forgotten. Just need a decent stop point to post them. Like once we get to top ten.
I think it's mainly because I'm disappointed that I lost what I did for the one pointers lists and didn't have adequate time to recreate what I wanted. Therefore it won't be as visually appealing (which is my definite downfall with this countdown)

I've seen Touch of Evil, A Streetcar Named Desire, Ikiru and On the Waterfront, but none of them made my list. They're all good movies, and I'm not surprised to see any of them made this countdown, but none of them are favorite movies for me.
I haven't seen The Searchers or The 400 Blows.
I've seen 68 of 86 movies so far.
My List:
2. An Affair to Remember (1957)
4. Oklahoma! (1955)

11.Singin' In The Rain
12.Ikiru
13.The Bridge On The River Kwai
14.The Seventh Seal

If this is correct, then I've seen 13 of the last 14 movies, but only 6 of them made my list, so I will end up with only 11 of the movies on my list making the countdown. (That's about what I expected when I made my list.)

Dial M for Murder was, in fact, my #1 choice. Expertly crafted film. I may have given it that extra one or two spots to cast some extra points after it, but it's a top 3 EASILY of the 50s (and Hitch in general) for me.

I haven't talked about my list in forever.
On the Waterfront was my number 2. A truly exceptional film with outstanding performances by Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint. Elia Kazan is the man. I remember first seeing this film shortly after joining Mofo and it really made me explore this era for filmmaking,
Dial M for Murder was my number 6. As with all Hitch, a truly brilliant story. Hitch is the master of suspense for a reason, and this one is no exception. The dialogue in this film is among the best that I have ever witnessed.
Tokyo Story was my number 8. Ozu is one of the best story tellers of all time and it is my favorite film of his. A very touching story for me.
Witness for the Prosecution was number 9 for me. Laughton's performance is standout and so is the direction of Mr. Billy Wilder.
High Noon at 10. One of my favorite Westerns and Cooper gives an exceptional performance as the hero of the film.
Night of the Hunter at 19. One of my favorite noirs. Laughton did a brilliant job of directing this film.
Ikiru at 21. One of the most emotional films that I've seen and brilliantly directed by Kurosawa. It's my favorite from him thus far,
Seventh Seal at 25. Technically speaking a completely masterful film that I hope to appreciate more with time.

Out of all the Hitchcock films from the 50's and 60's that I recently revisited, Dial M for Murder was the only one that I enjoyed as much, or more than, I remembered. I had it at #14.
I liked The Seventh Seal a good deal, but I'm not sure one viewing can do it justice.

2. Pather Panchali (1955) #40
4. An Affair to Remember (1956) #42

I love The Seventh Seal for being one of Bergman's most-audacious, blending iconic imagery of death with some wicked black comedy. For those who don't get this era Bergman (especially this and Wild Strawberries), I'll post again Da Duva and hope somebody responds this time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X2QmLWWxq4
I also didn't have Murder on my list, but it's excellent.
Dial M For Murder (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954) 3.5
Originally filmed and projected in theatres in 3-D, this Hitchcock classic, on DVD, still looks like it's almost presented in that format. Hitch expands on the one-set concept he used in Rope and perfected in Rear Window to ratchet up the tension in this thriller based on Frederick Knott's popular play. Part of Dimitri Tiomkin's musical score evokes what Bernard Herrmann used in 1958's Vertigo, and the plot device of taking advantage of an old college chum was used in that later film too. Ray Milland plays an retired tennis pro (remind anyone of Strangers on a Train?) who decides he'd rather inherit his wife's money than play the cuckold for her. The wife is the gorgeous Grace Kelly (Rear Window, To Catch a Thief) and her lover is mystery novelist Robert Cummings (Saboteur). The other two major characters are the "chum" (Anthony Dawson) who's "hired" to do the murder, and the dogged police detective (a witty John Williams) who tries to unravel the aftermath. Dial M For Murder is solid entertainment which intensifies as it progresses and is highly recommended to any who haven't seen it.
But hey, I did have another Hitch which didn't make it but was my #18.
The Trouble with Harry (Alfred Hitchcock, 1955) 3.5+
Hitch gleefully spins a tale about a dead body that almost everybody believes was personally killed by them and gets buried and unburied over and over. Yes, the film is a black comedy, but it does have plenty of trademark Hitchcock suspense as well as some of the funniest dialogue you'll ever hear. It takes place in New England during the fall, and Brenda and I both agree that it's probably the film which most resembles what our honeymoon looked like with all those striking autumnal colors. I don't want to get into too many details, but Harry causes trouble for an elderly hunter (Edmund Gwenn), a spinster (Mildred Natwick) who likes him, a painter (John Forsythe) with a devilish tongue, and a pretty young mother (Shirley MacLaine). This is not only the first Hitchcock film with a Bernard Herrmann score, but it's also MacLaine's film debut and an early flick for the boy (Jerry Mathers, the Beave from "Leave it to Beaver") who plays her son and steals all his scenes. It may take just a little bit to really get going, but this film is generally underrated in the Hitchcock oeurve.
My List
1. Alice in Wonderland (#27)
2. The Quiet Man (#51)
4. Room at the Top (#73)
8. The Caine Mutiny (#80)
14. People Will Talk (#88)
17. A Streetcar Named Desire (#19)
18. The Trouble with Harry (Did Not Place)
19. Night and Fog (#54)
21. Oklahoma! (#97)
23. Guys and Dolls (Did Not Place)
24. The Big Country (#66)

I had The Trouble With Harry on my original planned list at 25 but knocked it off for something slightly more obscure (but equally great). So I'll call it #26, I think it's a great film that doesn't get talked about anywhere near as much as it deserves, especially when you consider how much people still seem to love all the other "lesser Hitchcock films", if you want to call them that.
Got to be honest i didn't like The Trouble With Harry much and would say it is my least favourite of the 16 Hitch films i've seen. I wouldn't say it was bad, most of the humour didn't work for me though. I'd be up for trying it again at some point because the premise that you've descrbed here:
Hitch gleefully spins a tale about a dead body that almost everybody believes was personally killed by them and gets buried and unburied over and over.
Makes it sound hilarious and something i'd love, so maybe i wasn't in the right mood or it's just not my type of humour.

10. Strangers on a Train (1951)

Seen both movies. I liked Dial M For Murder and really liked The Seventh Seal. I had it at #12.

My prediction for the final 12. Let's give it another try. Only three of these are not on my list. I think I have Paths of Glory a little high, but there seems to be a Kubrick factor involved in these decade lists. Heck, it might even come in at number one.

I was a little gutted that Some like it Hot narrowly missed out on the top 10. It's my favorite classic comedy of all time and my favorite Billy Wilder film. The film that made Marilyn Monroe who she is and it certainly showed that she had a lot of talent. In a very tough ballot to crack the top of my list, it ended up as my number 5.

Fourteen of mine were revealed in 100-11. Most recently Kurosawa's touching Ikiru (my fifteenth pick) and Bergman's The Seventh Seal (my sixth). Which means that nine of my remaining twelve make up the collective top ten. The only one of the remaining ten I didn't choose was one of the three Hitchcocks that are coming, and longtime MoFos will not be surprised which one of those it is.
So cool. Cool, cool, cool.
My list, thus far...
3. In A Lonely Place (#33)
6. The Seventh Seal (#13)
8. The 400 Blows (#17)
9. Ace in the Hole (#44)
10. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (#36)

All About Eve was my #3 - truly surprised it isn't in the top ten where it belongs.
Didn't vote for Some Like It Hot - I like it more than I used to but the party on the train scene goes on too long imo and I'm not keen when it devolves into farce in the final quarter hour.
That's 17 of mine shown up now with only a further 5 expected to make the top 10.
In terms of points those 17 have accumulated 3367 of them.

Well I was 8/10 correct on my Top Ten Prediction. That's pretty good I guess. The two I was missing out on were Rashomon and Sunset Blvd. I'll make a top ten order prediction later.
I had All About Eve at #14. Did not have Some Like It Hot. Eight of mine will make up the top 10.

09.Singin' In The Rain
10.The Bridge on the River Kwai
There is my #1, I have watched All About Eve three time in the last 18-24 months. A new favorite that could end up being somewhere near my top 10. The script is one of the best ever. It is biting and funny. Full of great performances. Plus Monroe is even cuter and better suited for her part here than the unfunny and over rated Some Like It Hot.
My ten predction 1-10:
Rear Window
12 Angry Men
Vertigo
Seven Samurai
Singing In The Rain
Paths Of Glory
Rashomon
Bridge Over River Kwai
North By Northwest
Sunset Blvd
Wow, I would've guessed both of these films would've been in the top ten, but neither is! Crazy.

Ooof. I thought All About Eve was a top ten lock, i'm liking how this top 20 has been a bit of a surprise so far. Sorry fans but i'm glad it didn't make the top ten as i don't like it much. It's weird because the praise it gets is just, it does have a good script and performances but i just don't enjoy watching it.
Sorry to go against the grain so much here but i'm also not a fan of Some Like It Hot.
It is my least favourite Wilder i only found it sporadically funny. If the humour works for you i can see why it is considered great though.
Personally i'm happy two of the remaining ones made the top ten instead of them because they were my least favourite ones left.
Top Ten Prediction (changed it a bit because i've been so spectacularly wrong so far):
01.Vertigo
02.12 Angry Men
03.Rear Window
04.Seven Samurai
05.North By Northwest
06.Sunset Boulevard
07.Paths Of Glory
08.Singin' In The Rain
09.Rashomon
10.The Bridge On The River Kwai
