I love both those movies, Caged would have been on my list if it was a top 30, it surprised me when I watched it for the HOF.
As for the human condition it was my #16 and I'm surprised it's so low, I loved it.

I haven't seen Oklahoma and Caged. Caged looks good so I'll check it out, probably soon. I'll probably watch Oklahoma eventually too.

Wow. If your number one movie was "Caged", and it made it on the list, there is hope (a tiny bit of hope ;)) that my number one movie will make it on the list. :D That was a nice little surprise to see happen with this. :)

Caged is good, but for me it's missing the two most essential ingredients for a women-in-prison film: Pam Grier and topless cat fights.
I keep meaning to watch The Human Condition Trilogy, but that near ten-hour length keeps putting me off.

Nice spin.
On a side note, judging by recent comments in the forum it looks like Cranes would feature much higher already. I didn't vote for it but I was quite sure it would have featured much higher.

Caged (John Cromwell, 1950)
http://trueclassics.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/caged-poster.png?w=700
I want to give this a standing ovation! What a glorious film!!!
Everything is so well done: the acting, the lightning, the script, the sountrack, the way the main character goes from the innocent girl to the hardened woman with no illusions, the critique to the prisional system, the amount of amazing details... This is where Chicago or Orange is the New Black come from, but this is a million miles away!
Instant favourite material!!!
rating_4_5 -
Thank you CR for nominating this to the 50s HoF, it would never have got in the list otherwise!
Human Condition was the next movie on my 50s watchlist but, like many people, the 9+ hour lenght scared me a bit! I still haven't gave up on watching it, maybe this month.

I've actually only seen 3, which I feel awful as being a host. I thought Roman Holiday was a pretty good film but far from my favorite Wyler or Hepburn film. I'll try to watch a few of the ones I haven't seen yet the next couple days.

Roman Holiday is a perfect first Audrey Hepburn film to watch. Love that film, but not on my list.

Have you seen any yet Miss Vicky?
No, none yet.
I didn't start my 50s watching in earnest until too close to the deadline so there aren't that many that I have seen. Besides the 25 that made my ballot, I've probably only seen an additional dozen or so 50s movies.
As for what you've seen, eh, don't worry about. By the time I started the Animation Countdown, I think I'd only watched like 60 or so of the movies that made the cut. I challenged myself to watch the rest after it was complete.

Figured Roman Holiday could be higher, people love that Audrey girl
http://images1.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Roman-Holiday-audrey-hepburn-824628_640_480.jpg
Although maybe MoFo doesn't as much. Encountered this film several times for my 50s watchlist, ended up watching a decent amount of 50s films, but not this one. I'd be happy to watch it though, seems like one that could have been higher

I love Roman Holiday, but it didn't make my list. There's one other Audrey Hepburn film that did make it, even though Roman Holiday is probably the better film of the two. I chose my favorite.
Ozu is also featured a couple of times in my top 25 list, but I haven't seen Tokyo Twilight yet. I'll definitely give it a watch in the near future, though.

Roman Holiday was on my watchlist, and it's on Netflix instant but I didn't get too it, haven't seen the Ozu either but I had one of his high on my list. Don't think it'll make it anymore, Cobpyth probably had it somewhere on his but I don't know who else.
Honestly with Roman Holiday, Oklahoma!, The Cranes are Flying, and Human Condition all in the first ten, this seems like a very competitive list. A lot of my maybes are Nos now, and a lot of the films I considered locks on my list are maybes

Have seen Marty, House of Wax, Oklahoma!, The Blob, and Roman Holiday. Very interested to see what makes it next. Wonder if we'll see any more Vincent Price, as House of Wax is pretty much his best of his 50's movies, IMO (although there a couple that are arguably as good).

The first two films to make it have 46 points? That makes me worried for some of the more obscure films on my list...
Tokyo Twilight was one of the films on my list that I was talking about in the quoted post, so I'm pleasantly surprised that it made into onto the main list. That fact that Tokyo Twilight made it also makes me more hopeful for the other films I was talking about there. :)
This is also the second time that a film I voted for wouldn't have made it onto the 100 without my vote, the previous being The Italian Job from the 60's list.

Finally a film I've seen, Roman Holiday is decent, I like the ending.
The only Ozu film I've seen is Tokyo Story. Roman Holiday I've seen a few times, including at the cinema, but it didn't make my list. I've seen four of these movies so far, with two coming any day from Netflix. Oklahoma! is not available right now at Netflix, which shows how bad they've become, so I have no idea how or when I'll get around to watching it.

Roman Holiday is the only other Wyler I saw apart from Ben-Hur. It's a pretty cool movie! 3.5
Tokyo Twilight is the best Ozu and one of the best movies of the 50's. #4 on my list.

So not only have I seen Duck Amuck, I voted for it at #13. My preliminary list had a few Looney Tunes shorts on it, but ultimately this was the only one that stayed. The Music Room is a Bengali Citizen Kane.
Ahh, well that's an analogy that better explains why it did absolutely nothing for me. Really didn't care for The Music Room and i had high hopes based on what I heard, even blind bought the Criterion- which I guess is kind of common for me. Another film that I would've expected to be higher.
Duck Amuck is an amazing short, and it's awesome to see it snuck in!

Wow, didn't expect any Looney Tunes shorts to make it. I didn't have any room on my proper list but i of course love Duck Amuck it just won the Looney Tunes HOF i hosted nominated by gbg. I had it at #2 for that behind only Duck Dodgers. Here was my write up of it:
Duck Amuck
http://i63.tinypic.com/2ldyjdh.jpg
Duck Amuck along with What's Opera Doc? are pretty much the two most well regarded Looney Tunes cartoons, and probably the most acclaimed American shorts (of this length at least) of all time. Whether you enjoy them or not it isn't difficult to see why. I don't think there is many 6-8 minute videos as ambitious as these. This is just a ridiculously fun ride that showcases the genius of the Looney Tunes Animation Staff better than anything else. One thing that i think is often overlooked in Duck Amuck is the extreme attention to detail. Obviously you'll be saying that is what it is most praised for but with the ever changing scenery's and stuff Daffy is wearing they never actually forget about Daffy himself which would be extremely easy to do, even forgivable. But no, his facial expressions and body movement is done with as much care as any Looney Tunes Short from this area. Just pure brilliance, the stuff that makes me such a fan of these cartoons. The voice acting is incredible too, Daffy is changing so much throughout this cartoon and he gets increasingly more angry which is played to perfection. Anyway there's not much else to say, Nope has already mentioned its meta qualities and anyone who has seen it knows how great the ending is, possibly the best one and an admitted inspiration for one of my favourite South Park Episodes: Woodland Critter Christmas. The reveal of Bugs hand when he is closing the door on Daffy is one of my favourite images in all of Looney Tunes. Gets me every time.
Perfection!

Here was my write-up for Duck Amuck in the Looney Tunes HoF:
Duck Amuck
http://i.imgur.com/mbkdwDo.jpg
Another classic. The best part about this cartoon is how meta it is. It keeps twisting and turning, and the jokes just keep rolling. It just seems like the animators of this cartoon had a blast making it, and that really makes a difference. Possibly the best gag in Looney Tunes history comes at the very end of this short, and it still makes me laugh every time I see it. This cartoon just proves how creative and unique each cartoon was. That's all I'm gonna say about this one, its hard to think of a lot to write about a 6-minute cartoon. Still, it's fantastic, and I love every second of it.

Not seen any Satyajit Ray, guess I should at some point really. Must've seen Duck Amuck at least once when growing up I'm sure but whilst I enjoyed the Looney Tunes stuff as a youngster I've never revisited it since.

I saw Roman Holiday about 10 months ago but can barely remember it. I had to look up how I felt, and apparently I liked it.
The Music Room certainly has its merits, but it didn't do much for me. It's my least favorite out of I think 6 movies I've seen from director Ray.
I like Duck Amuck, but I don't vote for shorts no matter how I feel about them.
I had to look up to see if I had seen Tokyo Twilight. With so many similar titles and storylines, I get Ozu's movies mixed up. I've seen a few of his 50's movies, but that isn't one of them. I'll get it seen asap via Hulu. That makes 3 movies from the list I hadn't seen when the countdown started. I thought there might be 3 or less for the whole thing. I'm supposed to be watching cheap horror now wtf.

It's doubtful that many (if any at all) more shorts will appear on the countdown, but Looney Tunes in particular have been seen by a lot of people regardless of the era they were born into because they've been shown on television over and over again for decades.
Also, if you haven't noticed, a large percentage of MoFos are in their 20s and 30s and therefore were born well after the decade ended. So how easily accessible a film was at the time of its release doesn't necessarily mean anything as it relates to what the voters have or have not seen.

38 is near 40. Most people are shocked and think im in my 20s or teens by my posting skills. Which I have non too speak of. As far as Daffy goes am more of a Bugs, Sylvester and Road Runner and Coyote Fan.
Roman Holiday is a delightful romantic comedy tour of the City of Love, done up in neorealist style by William Wyler. The credits claim it's Audrey's film debut but she had a handful of bit parts in movies and TV shows before this won her the Oscar and made her a star.

Tokyo Twilight is a fair-to-middling '50s Ozu film with attractive female leads. Basically all the Ozus of this decade will probably cancel each other out, but I do expect more to show.

Satyajit Ray's The Music Room is a social satire posing as a drama. When the music and dancing comes near the end, it's quite hypnotic.

I love Duck Amuck, and I even nominated it in the recent Looney Tunes HoF, but it didn't make my list. The 1950s is probably my favorite decade for movies, so I had a hard enough time narrowing my list down to only 25 movies, so I had no room for any shorts. :(
I think at some later date we should have a MoFo countdown for shorts. It just seems unfair to lump 7-8 minute shorts in with a bunch of 2-3 hour movies.

People Will Talk was #14 on my list. I found this from Mother's Day 2008. Forgive the rambling first paragraph.
People Will Talk (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1951) 4
http://ak.buy.com/db_assets/prod_lrg_images/012/40231012.jpg
This being Mother's Day, Brenda picked out a film to watch and put it on even before she told me what she was doing. Her picking this film certainly doesn't surprise me. This movie is appropriate viewing anytime, but especially on Mother's Day. This film IS IN my Top 100, but aside from posting a photo, I basically said nothing, so I can understand how that might either piss people off or lead them to be pissed at me. I never intended that to happen (if it did). I was just trying to see if anybody would get interested enough to check out this completely original film all on their own. I mean, this flick is 57 years old, but it's still more current and unique than 96.99% of the films made since. I'm just sorry that more "People Don't Talk" about it.
The film follows who appears to be the greatest doctor in the history of the world, Noah Praetorius (Cary Grant). He doesn't seem to follow any medical formula except that he has an overwhelming desire to treat each patient as an individual and he completely listens to everything they say. Right there, you already know that you're dealing with one of the greatest humans who has ever lived. Dr. Praetorius teaches at a prestigious medical school, but a fellow doctor/"little man" (Hume Cronyn) is conducting a witch hunt to try to have Dr. Praetorius thrown out of the school. Much of this Scrooge-like doctor's evidence involves Doc Praetorius' trusted friend and co-worker Shunderson (the mind-bogglingly awesome Finlay Currie). Well, this is only the beginning of a full-blooded film which follows almost every one of its trails to pay dirt.
http://www.movieforums.com/community/userimages/304184827dc08101c1.jpg
People Will Talk is easily one of the most romantic films ever made. The fact that it involves a doctor and one of his patients named Deborah (the gorgeous Jeanne Crain), who just happens to be unmarried AND pregnant, and that they easily fall in love with each other (even amidst some white lies involving the pregnancy), shouldn't stop anyone from seeing how romantic, mature and totally believable this film is. It was WAY ahead of its time when it was filmed, and it's far more mature in discussing the subject than almost any other similar film made to this very day, Juno included. (Go ahead and offer one that can compare, please.)
This film contains a cavalcade of wonderful performances. Besides the people I've already mentioned, Margaret Hamilton is a riot in the opening scene as somebody who knows too much about Doc Praetorius and Shunderson, Walter Slezak is positively endearing as the Good Doctor's best friend, a teacher/bassist who has a lot to learn about his instrument but little to learn about being a friend, and Sidney Blackmer brings layers of depth as Deborah's father who feels he very well is an underachieving bum, but has some personal gifts to offer in the long run.
All in all, People Will Talk is a masterpiece to me. Yes, Mankiewicz won four Academy Awards in the two years preceeding this one. He won Best Director and Best Screenplay for both A Letter to Three Wives (1949) and All About Eve (1950).I love those films and give them both 4, but if I could only have one to keep between the three, it's a no-brainer for me. People Will Talk is just TOO special.
I've seen The Creature from the Black Lagoon and its two sequels (Clint Eastwood debuted in the first one) numerous times since my youth, and although I've never thought that much of them, I have to admit that the original does have as much charm nowadays as it has silliness. Julie Adams (credited as "Julia") is a babe, so you can see what the Creature sees in her. Trivia Note - UFO Diary, the film which Sarah worked on for two years and is now playing at festivals, was also worked on by editor Mitchell Danton, the son of Julie Adams and actor Ray Danton. I love Dave Edmunds version of the Creature's song - some of the scenes should remind you of Jaws. I included a cleaned up version of the trailer too.

I saw Creature From the Black Lagoon in the movie theater many years ago. (I think it was around the time there was a 3-D craze, and it was one of the old 3-D movies that was brought back to the theaters for a short time.) It was okay, but the main thing that I remember about it was that the creature looked kind of fake, so it never really scared me the way it should have. (But I guess that's normal for those old B-movies. ) I didn't rewatch it for this list, but it never had a chance to make my list anyway.

I don't remember if I had Creature from the Black Lagoon on my list. I've thrown out my list.
I had reviewed the movie back in 2013. (http://www.movieforums.com/reviews/911085-creature-from-the-black-lagoon.html) I had always wanted to see it. I gave it a good review, but since then, I feel like the movie doesn't really mean much to me. I see I called it a boring movie in my review. I was disappointed by it.
LOL:
One notable scene features the creature swimming along with Kay, whom the creature is always going after -- I guess he needs a woman. It must be lonely in that black lagoon -- we don't see any other creatures with him. I wonder what happened to them. Perhaps he is an orphan. Or maybe he swam away from his family and now lives a single bachelor's kind of life or something. Maybe he needs Queen Latifah and those three other black women from Living Single to move into his black lagoon. It is a black lagoon, afterall.

Its kinda funny how a wild guess about what could be the next movie in the countdown has been my most famous day ever on this site. Which is odd too me i myself was certain that Creature from the black lagoon would be on and its as they say a B movie and 88 or 87 seemed a likely spot for A Creature Horror even though The Blob was first off the board in Horror of that genre.

Bigger Than Life is certainly filmed and acted that way, so that could make you love it or leave it. I'm somewhere in the middle, but Ray's original use of angles and lighting, and Mason's acting turn it into a cross between a horror movie, drug addiction warning and a medical treatment (melo)drama.

So is there no plan so far for the next countdown? Because I really would like to host one.
There's Omni's Action Movies, if that's a thing.
Think the site as a whole should decide on a proper one and that can just run whenever tbh.

Yeah an Actors one. I might be helping him out with that but it is to be more like one of SC's ones i think.

I was thinking I might host a non-movie countdown in the summer of next year. Either a books or a video games one.

An yet Oklahoma and The Blob can. Not saying they are not good movies im just saying why should B movies get a better slot. I guess disney animation is only thing good in the 40s and 50s which too me is B.S AND Blood Alley is a good movie with Lauren Becall, John Wayne and Paul Fix.

just finished watching my bigger than life criterion again. perfect movie. the deconstruction of suburbia, the subversion of the patriarchy, the criticism of the idea of a "miracle drug," the shadows, the symbolism, the suspense, the james mason, the incredibly quotable lines. everything about it is perfect.

When this countdown was first announced, I was pretty sure that To Catch a Thief would be on my list, but sadly, this movie ended up being cut from my final list. I'm glad it made the countdown without my help.
Bigger than Life is a good movie, but I never really considered it for my list.

Fourteen Hours is a very good movie, but I've never heard anyone else mention it, so I'd be surprised if it makes the countdown. (However this is one time that I'd be happy if I was proven wrong.)

I like most of the ones I've seen. Family Plot was not good but not terrible, I really didn't care for Foreign Correspondent and flat out hated The Birds. Otherwise I've liked what I've seen.

To Catch a Thief is Hitchcock's flat-out sexiest picture. Grace Kelly and Cary Grant really hit it off. The film doesn't care about subtlety. The emotions are expressed through the most glamorous visual metaphors. Lovely escapism...

I'm also a huge fan of Bigger Than Life. I saw it for one of the early Hall of Fames and I was really impressed by it. Smart, profound, dark and beautiful film.

The African Queen was #20 on my list.

The African Queen (John Huston, 1951) 3.5-
http://www.maineboats.com/files/u2/african-queen.jpg
I have this film memorized from the old days, but I'm happy to report that the DVD restoration is beautiful and has deleted all those nasty green lines and silhouettes which used to curse this film (yep, meaty, it looks 100% better than the version you watched earlier). The chemistry between Bogie and Kate Hepburn is wonderful, and their gradual romance and love for each other in the face of death is believable and humorous. Even with all these significant persons involved, The African Queen is an excellent example of an independent film. It was made completely-independently from the studio system, but what would you expect since Huston's previous studio flick (The Red Badge of Courage) was butchered. This "independence" may explain part of the reason why the movie seems so personal and why the film's finale seems to almost have been made up on the spur of the moment. Bogart won his only Oscar, quite an accomplishment in the face of Brando's Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, but the key to the film's popularity is how Hepburn can play her completely-opposite character (Huston told her to play her as Eleanor Roosevelt and the rest, as they say, is History) so wonderfully and yet still project such perfect love and understanding. Sure, there are some "fakish" scenes here and there, but they're far-outnumbered by realistic scenes where when Bogie throws the anchor in the river, you can see and hear all the REAL AFRICAN birds react and fly away. No BS CGI in this flick, just a few quaint models here and there. Check this one out if you've failed to do so thus far.
A Place in the Sun is another good film which has some of director Stevens' most naturalistic cinematography and poetic transitions which completely turn the Monty Clift character (George Eastman) into a tragic figure, but it also has D.A. Raymond Burr at his histrionic worst too.

14 movies in and still only one that I've seen.
So glad A Place In The Sun made it, i was starting to think it missed out. I had it at #9, wish i could have had it higher because it is really amazing, my #4 to #12 or something were really grouped together and it was difficult to decide what went where. Curious who had it at #4.
Love Khep and Bogie, haven't seen The African Queen yet though.

...Love Khep and Bogie, haven't seen The African Queen yet though.
I love the African Queen, it's one of the few movies that I could watch over and over (and I normally don't do that).
A lot of people don't seem to like it, even though it's considered one of the greats. I think that might be because they go into the film expecting more than what the film actually is. It's not a sweeping epic like Lawrence of Arabia, and it's not a deep movie like Kane, and it's not deeply emotional moving and it's not even really about high adventure...
It's beauty lies in the simplicity of the two characters as they grow as people and learn to respect each other. The fact that they are on this African adventure is almost incidental. It's almost like an intimate stage play where we get to know these two diametrically opposed characters and discover their inner charm, as they discover each other.
Anyway I hope you will enjoy it:) when you watch it.
Back in my teens when I was going through a Bogie phase, I might have called The African Queen one of the favorites, but now I just think it's a really enjoyable and fun movie. The chemistry between Bogart and Hepburn is great, but then Hepburn seems to have great chemistry with all her male co-stars. But it wasn't on my list.
And I seriously considered A Place in the Sun, but it ended up among a handful of movies I had to cut off at the last second, in this case because it'd been a few years since I'd seen it and I didn't get around to rewatching it in time. I have it ready to watch right now, actually.
Really solid list thus far. My favorite up to this point is Some Came Running (a film that ranked highly on my list). Tokyo Twilight is excellent as well.

I don't get the praise for The African Queen. Is it bad of me to say I was rooting against it making the list?
Of the first 18, I've seen 9. I need to see some more of them soon.
Cranes are Flying was a really good one I thought. My list was packed with favorites so it still probably would not have cracked my 25, but it would have came close.
The Blob was just great fun for me.
Of the 8 I haven't seen I'm thinking of watching House of Wax and A Place in the Sun next.

That brings me to 100% seen, and I think there's a decent chance that I will have seen the rest. If anything shows that I haven't seen, I'm wondering if it could be Limelight, or some random musical.
