All About Eve and Some Like It Hot are both great movies, but neither made my list. I'm surprised that All About Eve didn't make the top ten, but I think Some Like It Hot is a bit overrated, so I thought it would have been a little bit lower than this.

I think Some Like It Hot is overrated myself, but surely you thinking it is overrated would mean you'd think it would end up a bit higher rather than lower?

When I started to make my '50s list, All About Eve was one of the first I listed, but unfortunately it didn't make the final 25, even though two others (People Will Talk, Guys and Dolls) by the writer/director did.
All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1950) 4
http://fromtheporch.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/all-about-eve.jpg
Oscar-winning classic retains most of its mordant humor and backstabbing plot turns as it tells the story of a mousy young thing (Anne Baxter) named Eve who idolizes the First Lady of the Theatre, Margo Channing (Bette Davis). Before long, Eve goes to work for Margo, but Eve seems to be studying Margo in an attempt to "take over" for the older actress and get in the good graces of Margo's director/lover (Gary Merrill) and her playwright (Hugh Marlowe). Other important characters include the playwright's wife (Celeste Holm) and an acid-tongued columnist (George Sanders) who knows more about Eve than the other characters and plans to try to control her life, both personally and career-wise. The way the film builds from everybody loving Eve to everybody hating her is masterfully done, as is the fact that the film is told in flashback and has multiple narrators. Mankiewicz is known for his dialogue, and this is undoubtedly the most famous of his films, although many others (A Letter to Three Wives, People Will Talk, Guys and Dolls, Sleuth) are well worth watching. This one will end up here (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=14820) ASAP.
Some Like It Hot was my #6 - a hilarious sex comedy and so much more. As you can see, the photography is great in this movie, as are the music, sets, costumes, etc. All the acting is great too with Marilyn being both sexy and vulnerable. The plot makes total sense too. (Well, it is farcical, but why they're hiding out as women to get away from the St. Valentine's Day Massacre gangsters is fully explained). This is Billy Wilder's second-best film to me, only after the under-seen One, Two, Three. Two hours of superlative entertainment!

Raul always does the same thing. If there was a 'things that bother you much more than they should' thread then that would be one of my answers. HIgher on the list people!

Shouldn't the top of the list have the best movies? Wouldn't that make the better movies higher and the worse movies lower?

I just deleted that comment because i completely misread what you were saying  . My point was the fact that you find the film overvalued would mean you'd expect it to be higher on the list rather than lower which would conform with your opinion and therefore not make it overrated.

I liked Some Like it Hot, its a classic comedy but it didn't feel like one of the greatest movies ever made to me (like all art it doesn't touch everybody, specially this very American iconic movie that obviously will not tend to appeal to someone who does not share that cultural background).

I haven't watched the other one.

I think I included Seventh Seal in my list, that's a great movie by Bergman. Very elegant in it's style and impressive as a work of art.

Ooof. I thought All About Eve was a top ten lock, i'm liking how this top 20 has been a bit of a surprise so far. Sorry fans but i'm glad it didn't make the top ten as i don't like it much. It's weird because the praise it gets is just, it does have a good script and performances but i just don't enjoy watching it.

Actually agree with you to an extent, I think it's a good film that's well written but not overly enjoyable. Maybe a bit cynical from what I remember. Maybe I'll like it more on a rewatch.

Some Like It Hot is very good, or great, I'd have to watch it again to be sure which :p

Singin' in the Rain has the greatest collection of classic songs (most are from the '20s and have been in other films of that era) and dances of any original movie musical. Donald O'Connor and Gene Kelly spend the movie trying to outdance each other. It's also the best Hollywood satire ever made. Debbie Reynolds and Jean Hagen also contribute mightily. I easily could have had it higher. Another musical made my list but not the Top 100.

The King and I (Walter Lang, 1956)

This musical version of Anna and the King of Siam plays out as a battle of wills and cultures. Set in 1862, it tells the story of an English schoolteacher widow (Deborah Kerr) who brings her young son (Rex Thompson) to Siam where she's been hired to teach the children of the King (Oscar winner Yul Brynner). The King has many wives and concubines and even more children, so it is a big job. Anna requires a separate house, away from the palace, to live with her son, and although the King had earlier agreed to this stipulation, he has never had one built. This immediately sets up friction between Anna and the King, but she agrees to stay when she meets and falls in love with the children. Most of the film plays as a romantic musical comedy, with the main characters warming up to each other, but there are some strong dramatic moments in the second half involving the King's use of slaves.

The music in this film is good, although I like the songs a bit better in Oklahoma!. The songs do fully flesh out the characters though, and there's a long section where there is a Siamese version of Uncle Tom's Cabin performed as a musical which is quite unique for a Rodgers & Hammerstein show. Thinking of the songs in The King and I actually makes me remember songs in The Sound of Music. There's something about "Getting to Know You" which distinctly reminds me of "Do-Re-Mi".

For me Singin' in the Rain is the epitome of the Hollywood Musical, the funniest, most engaging, and endlessly appealing flick the genre ever gave birth to. Being a musical, i struggled with a few parts of Singin' In The Rain but overall i liked it a lot and had it as my #24. Here's a writeup i did for it:

Singin' In The Rain (1952) - 4-

http://s33.postimg.org/xxzwvtecv/sing.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

I'm not positive of this rating, like most musicals it had stuff that annoyed me, a few really silly cartoonish jokes, some overly dancey scenes that just aren't for me but there was quite a lot i liked/loved as well.

I have heard the soundtrack before as one of my aunts is a massive fan, not sure if this contributed to me (mostly) enjoying the songs, or if it was just right for me. Man i love Singin' In The Rain (the song) it was great seeing the scene properly with the context and all, , it is just so pleasant i love the little "doo doo roo doo" at the start of it, it's probably very wrong that it made me want to watch A Clockwork Orange :D. That scene really is magical, it is so obvious that it is a set but it doesn't matter it just manages to work. Love the ending as well it was obvious what was going to happen but it was still nice to see since Hagen had played the villain role so well. I genuinely found the story interesting, at first i thought it was going to be the same old guy falls in love with someone different from his usual company and changes to be with her i've seen several times. Somehow i wasn't aware this was about the transition from Silents to Talkies which made the whole thing feel more original and intriguing. Ever since i watched Sunset Boulevard i have always been interest to the introduction of talkies, and whether peoples careers were actually ended by it. Very good performances all around, i always hear about Kelly, Reynolds and Hagen and they deserve the praise they get, but i also really liked O'Connor who i rarely hear mentioned, Cosmo was great think he made me laugh the most. Still this was the joke that got the biggesr laugh from me: "well of course we talk, don't everybody" :D

Anyway very good film, to my utter disbelief it will be in contention for my 50's list. Most importantly this has actually got me excited in watching A Star Is Born and Oklahoma! which i'm pretty sure i have a contract with gbg and CR promising i'll watch them. ;)

Singin' in the Rain was third on my list. A fantastic film and it's a film that if someone told may they disliked it, I would probably think a little lesser of them, sorry, it's just that damn good. The top three films on my list were the easiest for me to decide, and will always remain long time favourites.

When I first watched the film I wasn't madly in love with it, I thought it was good, but not great. I think I didn't watch it properly, maybe in parts on TV or whilst doing other stuff. I think I wanted to get it watched but was busy at the time so assumed that it wouldn't be absolutely amazing so I wouldn't miss out on much. Rewatches have revealed to me just how wrong I was. Extremely well crafted, funny, great music, great performances etc.

I think it was last year I showed it to my mum and my brother who were both quite cautious going in to it, especially the latter as I don't think he's ever sat down and properly watched any filmmusical before or after, and add the fact that we rarely sit around and watch films together. We all loved it.

I like Singin' in the Rain...it didn't make my list and it's not one of my favorite 50s musicals. I suspect it made #10 by strength of it's name recognition and by a general unfamiliarity with musicals that many MoFos seem to have.

IMO the best of the 1950s musicals goes to A Star is Born, which won't be making the list now, but sure should have.

Probably the most important Japanese film ever made in that it was the first big international hit from there, made Kurosawa a star, as well as giving the top five-billed actors meaty roles which led to bigger and better things. However as far as complex themes told in a dramatically-new and excitingly-visual style, it's tough to beat the seemingly-simple yet deceptive Rashômon.

Rashomon was my #5. It, like most of the films in my list, blew me away with its power on the first viewing, and while it wasn't my first Kurosawa film, it was the one that really made me a fan. (Although my #1 and #2 films don't really have a first viewing to speak of as I just grew up with those movies, but we'll save that for later.) The best part of Kurosawa is there's always something more to learn about the artistry of his films every time you watch them.

My List:

3. The 400 Blows (#17)
5. Rashomon (#9)
6. Pickup on South Street (#72)
7. Ikiru (#16)
8. Mon Oncle (#67)
11. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (#37)

05.Paths of Glory
06.Sunset Blvd.
07.North By Northwest
08.Rashomon
09.Singin' In The Rain
10.The Bridge on the River Kwai

I've been wrong, but not by much. The Bridge on the River Kwai has surprised me, but maybe now I'll get it right. If not, I'll just give up. (And I'm hoping I'm really wrong about a couple of those.)

New prediction:

03.12 Angry Men
04.Rear Window
05.Paths of Glory
06.Sunset Blvd.

All About Eve was my #2 pick, but it could have been my #1 on another day. My top two are very close, It's quite possible that whichever I saw last would be my #1 choice.

Singin' In The Rain was my #14 (and is one of the few musicals I like, though the last time I watched it I didn't like it as much as I had previously. Hopefully just a one-off thing) while The Seventh Seal was #19. I've not seen much Bergman, but this is the only one I've liked.

Paths of Glory along with Fear and Desire, Killers Kiss and Barry Lyndon are the Kubricks i still have to see. It's also the last movie on the countdown i haven't seen. Really not sure why i haven't yet, will soon.

Going to make one more prediction to try and outdo SC:

01.Vertigo
02.Rear Window
03.12 Angry Men
04.Seven Samurai
05.North By Northwest
06.Sunset Boulevard
07.The Bridge On The River Kwai

Paths of Glory, awesome film, a few years ago it would have been my #1 or #2, although with my current viewing preferences I had it #22.

What I said for it back in the RTLMYS thread~
Story has tension-packed scenarios involving the French army during World War I, starring Kirk Douglas as Colonel Dax... who defends his soldiers in a court marshal case, where Dax's men are accused of cowardice. I got crazy chills all up and down my spine like never before when Christiane sings the German folk song at the end. Her song made me think about how folks these days tend to hate each other for having different opinions. Just as a first reaction, i notice that quite a lot these days. This film made me feel there is the possibility to understand, even for people who hate each other for differences... Like the French soldiers who join in to a folk song of their enemy

My List
#6. The Seven Year Itch
#9. Horror of Dracula
#12. Creature From The Black Lagoon
#13. Alice in Wonderland

I think Kubrick is such a well known and liked director that his films were ones just about everybody who was watching films for this countdown planned on watching. Hitch is the god of this countdown though, pretty much guaranteed 2 in the top 5; maybe even the top 2 and a good possibility of 3 in the top 5.

Paths of Glory is my #3 and my current avatar and CUT.

Paths of Glory (Stanley Kubrick, 1957)

Kubrick's powerful, sensitive study of not so much an impossible mission by the French during WWI, but an insane plan passed down by the Joint Chiefs of Staff to somehow appease the media and the public. When the mission turns out to be the preordained failure it always was, then some of the men who weren't cut to bits in the attack are put on trial for cowardice. Of course, the trial has no formal charges and no written record kept of it, but Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas), the man who both led the troops on the mission and is now serving as the scapegoats' defense attorney, tries his best, again, to save his men from death. This is only a cursory recap of all the complex details and scathing scenes found in this 86-minute masterpiece, which remains the most humanistic condemnation of war ever depicted.
Even though I can relate to someone saying that Paths of Glory has flaws, I think it's perhaps one of the most-perfect films I've ever seen. What flaws I find would be in the script being too perfect, or some of the acting of the various "bad guys" being a tad too obvious. But that matters little with the sum total of the movie. The ending makes me cry like a baby when the future Mrs. Kubrick sings, and the men see what they're missing and many are likely to never get back to since they're probably going to go through another attack again in the next few days.

Eyes Wide Shut made #15 on Harry Lime's 90s countdown

By the time we finish the 40s countdown, Hitchcock will be close, but Kubrick will remain the only director with a #1 film in two different decades, but it's possible a Htichcock film will end up #1 this decade, and he had the #2 film of the 60s. He should end up with one or two top 10 films of the 40s. Even so he won't quite match Kubrick as the MOFO king.

There's so little in the 50's that I like that I did consider Paths Of Glory for the tail end of my list. It's the only Kubrick I've seen that I'm come close to liking in its entirety. So if you're slightly reticent about giving it a go, maybe that will be enough to nudge you towards a decision.

Paths of Glory won the 8th Hof and impressed me enough to watch more Kubrick films.

My review:
http://susanluciani.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/pathsofglory03.jpg
Paths of Glory (Stanley Kubrick, 1957)
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Cast: Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, Adolphe Menjou
Genre: Drama, War

About: After a French soldier refuses to attack an enemy position, a pompous general accuses the soldier of cowardice. Leaving the soldiers commanding officer to defend him.

Review: I was totally impressed with Kubrick's amazing cinematography. It reminded me of Orson Welles' work in Citizen Kane. The next time you watch a 'run of a mill' movie pay attention to how often close ups are used. They're used a lot, which means the cinematographer is using a telephoto lens with a narrow angle of view. They do this because it cuts out much of the background scene allowing for a cheaper made set. If you can't see much of the walls of an interior shot then they don't have to be made or dressed for the movie. Kubrick awards us with beautiful wide angle shots. Even on close ups he goes with a wide angle lens with a small aperture for great depth of field in the background.

https://nonamemovieblog.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/paths-trial.png

In the shot above, Kubrick has used a wide angle lens with a low mount-upwards angle, this shows beautifully the rich detail of the Schleissheim Castle in Germany. The camera angle gives an imposing feel with the soldiers looming larger than life. This is a nice shot with lots of visual impact.

https://thetimothycareyexperience.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/paths202.jpg

I was also impressed with the film noir/German expression style of lighting and shadows that was used in this beautifully framed shot. Both the foreground and background subjects are set at the photographers 'rule of 3rds', with the overall composition looking balanced. Nicely done.

One more shot that was stunning, towards the end of the film inside the castle we have the two generals talking at the bottom of a long stair case...way in the distance, on top of the stairs are two small figures. Then the camera goes to them and we hear their discussion. Look for that scene it's impressive!

The last scene I want to talk about is the battle field. In the trench scene there's this very long dolly shot traveling down the length of the trench. The camera just keeps going and going showing us the war weary men. We see the sides of the trenches lined with 100s of men. In most war movies they don't have that many extras in the shot as they cost money. The trench and no man's land scenes look real.

Despite the dramatic events in the story, I found the film somewhat austere. I never had a personal connection to it, it felt emotionally distant. But...that's not a negative comment. I get the feeling that Kubrick was working on the visual impact of the film. The French military is shown as inflexible and regimented, so the austere feel of the story matched that perfectly. I can only concluded that Kubrick planned it that way and is a genius.

Well my final guess is on course. The Bridge On The River Kwai was my #5. Think David Lean is starting to become one of my favourite directors even though i've only seen 3 from him. I wrote this about it:

The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957) - 4.5+

https://s31.postimg.org/4481hxcfv/bridge.jpg (https://postimage.org/)

Loved this. David Lean is starting to become one of my favourite directors, he has an incredible knack of making these mammoth films interesting throughout. At no time during this, Lawrence or Arabia or Doctor Zhivago (which i like quite a bit less than these two) was i looking at the time or hoping this would end. This is a great achievment for one film to be like this, but three to be like this despite their massive length for me anyway is amazing. I loved Guinness' character. His steadfast refusal to work because the Japanese weren't following international law and all the punishment he went through reminded me of Cool Hand Luke except he was doing it for a reason, something important. The scene when he finally wins and the soldiers run to congratulate him was great. When Saito tells him this and he just lets out a sigh of relief as if "thank god" before composing himself and buttoning up his shirt before proudly walking out in front of them was a nice touch. I wasn't as crazy about Holden's character but i did like his storyline. Colonel Saito was a good villain. He started off as a typical tyrant but you ended up seeing that he was just a member of a harsh regime under extreme pressure to complete this difficult task. Loved the ending and Nicholson's realization of what he has done and what this place has done to him. Anyway fantastic film which will make my 50's list. Kind of want to watch all of David Lean's films i haven't seen right now haha.

Shadow of a Doubt didn't do that well in the first Film Noir HoF so I doubt top ten for that. Probably around the 50 mark. Rope can easily make the top twenty and Notorious right behind it though.

We'll see, but I wouldn't use the Film Noir NOF as an indication of Shadow of a Doubt's performance, since there were far fewer people involved in the HOF and I don't think of Shadow of a Doubt as film noir, which was why I had it fairly low on my list. It has a legitimate chance at top 10 for the decade, and Notorious is one of Hitch's best films, so it should do very well too. And a lot of people really like Rope, so who knows.

Notorious is in my top three Hitchcocks, not sure which i like best out of them. So it'll be high on my list. I have Shadow Of A Doubt ready to watch will get to it soon. I think the HOFs are great for giving boosts to relatively unknown films but i don't think they are a great indicator of something like a Hitchcock film, again he's one of if not the most popular and well known director of this time so i think there's a good chance people will seek out a lot of his films from this time. Rope i haven't seen but i'm planning to. Also what about Rebecca? I just watched that the other day and i'd say it is probably in my top five Hitch films.

Yeah, i meant does anyone think that it has a chance at top ten in the 40s Countdown? I think it is probably more well known than Rope and Shadow of a Doubt, probably due to the Best Picture win. Not read the book but the film was excellent IMO. Looked amazing and had a really haunting story.

I rarely hear much about Rebecca in comparison to the other two films, but it is Hitchcock and I think it has a chance to show up pretty high on the countdown. One thing's for sure, I'll have several Hitchcock films on my own list, when the time comes.

I'm top heavy with them too. So when I start seeing what new watches I'm going to get to, my Noir count could grow. I'm actually much happier with my preliminary 40's than I was with the last three, I still would probably like to see the last 5-7 drop off.

Casablanca
Citizen Kane
It's A Wonderful Life

Maybe. I think How Green Was My Valley might be the higher Ford though since i hear it mentioned more often here. The Grapes Of Wrath is a more well known film though so you may be right. Also wouldn't be surprised to see something like Pinocchio or Fantasia in the top 20 at least.

Citizen Rules
10-02-16, 08:37 PM
Fantasia yea, maybe it could go top 10. I'm not good at predicting and I suppose it depends on the number of list sent in and how deep into 40s films most of those list go. If there's a lot of list from more casual viewers then I would expect Pinocchio or Fantasia to go higher. I've never seen either but both are very well liked.

There seems to be a lot of love for How Green Was My Valley, I wasn't really into it on my only viewing but was tired so need another watch.

Everyone should watch The Grapes of Wrath if for no other reason then to learn where Rage Against the Machine got some of their lyrics. Now don't google that, just watch the movie and be surprised.

Yeah I like The Grapes of Wrath but I don't think it's great, maybe that'll change if I watch it again. Me, Lucas and Bluedeed all love How Green Was My Valley, but outside of that I'm not sure. Mark might have it in the lower half of his list?

I think all the films in your post Camo will be top 10, and the Maltese Falcon too. The Big Sleep seems to be another film that everyone seems to have seen. The Great Dictator will be high too.

Pinocchio is my favourite Disney film. I still love it but i'd hesitate to suggest it to you since you didn't see it at a young age. If you have any kids/young relatives or whatever i'd suggest giving it a try with them. Amazing film. Also one of three films that properly scared me along with The Exorcist and Poltergeist 2 as a kid.

I really love that we are going into the studio director era. I've been reading a lot about it and the directors lately, have stockpiled multiple films from various directors from the 30s/40s haha.

Kwai was my #10. Alec Guinness gives his greatest dramatic performance and the film's verisimilitude is nonpareil. (That sentence may be as pompous as Col. Nicholson seems but it's true.)
I'm pretty sure the first Lean film I saw was The Bridge on the River Kwai, on TV, sometime in the 1960s. I knew it was really good, but it produced so many contradictory feelings in me, even as a pre-teen, that I wasn't truly sure how good it really was. I couldn't decide which of the characters were right or wrong, and I'm talking about at least four different main characters here. Nicholson (Alec Guinness), Shears (William Holden), Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) and Warden (Jack Hawkins) all seemed to be equally "right" and "wrong", and then the way the ending was staged made it even more difficult to know what was going on and who did the right thing. But I will say now, after having watched the film at least 20 times, that it's meant to be complex and open to interpretation, and because it was a big, spectacular film, I can understand why it garnered so many Awards, even if Kubrick's more-striking Paths of Glory came out the same year to little fanfare.
My List
1. Alice in Wonderland (#27)
2. The Quiet Man (#51)
3. Paths of Glory (#8)
4. Room at the Top (#73)
6. Some Like It Hot (#11)
8. The Caine Mutiny (#80)

The films I love the most are getting burned up already in the less prestigious half of the top ten, which means I have zero doubts that the only movie I did not vote for in this top ten is going to take the number one spot. Oh, well. The collective list and my own synced up perfectly for at least one film, David Lean's The Bridge on the River Kwai which we both had at number seven. Not quite as ambitious or philosophical as Lean's next epic, the singular achievement that is Lawrence of Arabia, but an excellent pic in its own right, with magnificent, iconic performances by William Holden, Sessue Hayakawa, and the mighty Alec Guinness (this was somehow his only Oscar victory). Kubrick's Paths of Glory is his first masterpiece, and remains a stinging indictment of the futility and insanity of organized warfare. I had it fourth on my list. Akira Kurosawa is, along with Martin Scorsese, my favorite filmmaker of all time, and for me Rashômon is his masterpiece among masterpieces. Accordingly I had it as my first choice. If I could have voted for it four different times from four perspectives, I would have, and all four would have been first place votes. It's not as "fun" nor as straightforward as The Seven Samurai, which is finishing higher in the collective vote, but if you have never bothered to watch it, I beg of thee, go see it ASAP, if not sooner.

MY LIST...
1. Rashômon (#9)
3. In A Lonely Place (#33)
4. Paths of Glory (#8)

Having seen only one other Kurosawa film (and relatively little Japanese cinema in general), I didn't know what to expect from this but decided to watch it based on its reputation alone.

The cast of characters was varied and interesting and I was able to engage pretty well with them. The story had a good mix of drama, action and a surprising amount of humor, which helped to balance out the tragedies and the loss. I can definitely see why it was later re-imagined as a Western, though I've yet to see The Magnificent Seven.

But I didn't quite love it. Due to its 3.5 hour run time, I struggled a bit to get through it. Not gonna lie: My attention span just isn't that long and I had to take a few breaks. I would've preferred a shorter film. Aside from that though, the film was very good. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a masterpiece, but I think it is deserving of its reputation.

Seven Samurai is a beautiful epic containing character development, strategy, comedy, thrilling, muscular action and poetic visuals. I put it at #20, but that was probably too low.

I had Seven Samurai at my #11.

Great epic with an expertly paced story that doesn't bore me for it 3 hours and 30 minutes or however long it is.
