Who Had The Harder Life?

Based on their movies who do you think had the worst life (also give a reason why); Jim Caroll (played by Leonardo Di Caprio in The Basketball Diaries) or Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years a Slave). I know the two are quite hard to compare, but the way they are portrayed in the films gives you the idea that they both had pretty awful lives.

I thought people would say Northup. But Jim Caroll prostituted himself at just the age of 16 for drugs, was put in prison by his own mother, was kicked out by his mother and forced to live on the streets when he was only like 15/16 and his basketball coach was always making sexual advancements towards him.

Much of which still contained an element of choice, at least at first. That alone makes it an easy decision.

Obviously, we're comparing super awful to super super awful, but violations don't get much more fundamental than enslavement.
