I doubt anyone would agree that these are the best of all time but here are my favorites:

1. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – The Smiths
Lyrically and musically this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written in my opinion. A song that can be interpreted in different ways (like any great song). I always thought of it as a song about loneliness and the desperate longing to meet someone that would take you away. Someone so special that even dying would be enjoyable as long as you were sitting next to her. The car ride is a fantasy he has created in his mind and the “light” being a metaphor for hope and that no matter how bad his life is he can still cling to that light that never goes out.

2. Still Ill – The Smiths
Another very sad song by The Smiths about loneliness and depression and the longing for better days. Great guitar work by Johnny Marr.

3. Billy – Bad Religion
“Then darkness and disorder slapped him sharply in the face, yeah.
It hit him like a friend, struck something deep within.
He couldn't break the chain of slow decay that seemed to drag him
Just like a fatal tie toward the other side.”
Any BR song could take this spot but if I had to pick a favorite it would be this one. An autobiographical song about Brett’s drug addiction and his desire to escape. One of the most haunting guitar riffs I’ve heard in any punk rock song.

4. Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen
Definitely one of Bruce’s best songs IMO. About a guy down on his luck that wants to get away but cannot because of his debt.

5. California Burritos - Chuck Ragan
A great song about loneliness and depression and wanting more. Check it out if you like more folky type music.

6. The Biggest Lie – Elliot Smith

7. Valentine - The Old 97’s
Great acoustic guitar song about someone who was just dumped.

8. Heart of Gold – Neil Young

9. Here’s Looking At You Kid – The Gaslight Anthem

10. Asleep – The Smiths
A song about suicide. The piano in this song is amazing.
Hmm there seems to be a common theme running through the music I like. I think I need to get out more....
