Between yesterday and today:

The President's Last Bang
Cure
Saw 2
Hellevator
Dead Ringers
The Dead Zone
Match Point

and four episodes of "Battlestar Galactica", heh. Some nice gems in that list. I loved The President's Last Bang and The Dead Zone and was actually pretty taken by Match Point.

Poltergeist (Dir. Tobe Hooper, 1982)
Love this film so much. JoBeth Williams is just awsome in this. I dunno what it is. Maybe its coz she's hot. And she can scream.....Anyway its a classic horror movie, probably my favourite actually. I love the scene where she's running down that corridor to the screaming kids. Everything about it is just great scary fun, the clown on the bed! The scary tree! The people under the ground! The sucky closet! The man pulling his face off! The little munchkin lady! Love it.

The Work of Director Jonathan Glazer (Dir. Jonathan Glazer, Nick Cave, 2005)
Having a bit of a Glazer binge at the moment. Birth kind of mesmerised me so ive been looking into his other stuff, and he really hasn't done much else. This dvd has snippets from his films (Birth, and Sexy Beast) and the advertisements he's been involved with (He came up with the idea and directed the surfing Horses Guinness advert, i never knew that.) and its got some really funny segments with Mr Dennis Pennis. (I think only Brits will know this name) I just love Glazers style. His cinematography is always just impeccable. Every single shot is like a piece of art. And the man really knows how to use music in his films. Good dvd with some funky stuff on it.

Sexy Beast (Dir. Jonathan Glazer, 2000)
I really enjoyed this. Although i was suprised at its length, with a pretty brief 84 minutes. It has the feel of a Ritchie-esque Brit gangsta movie but it obviously has Glazers own style, with Amanda Redman and Ray Winston giving superb performances of the retired gangsta couple hiding in sunny Spain from the unbelievably intimidating Don Logan played to perfection by Ben Kingsley. And what is with that horrific spooky rabbit in it? Gave me the jeebies. Very slick, Great style, great movie.

The People's Republic of Clogher
Lord Of War (2005, Andrew Niccol)

3/5

When one makes a film about a fundamentally flawed man plying a reprehensible trade who better to cast than good old Nic Cage? He drawls his way through this well made (jarringly awful, through terrible CGI, opening sequence aside) morality tale in his sleep, concentrating just enough to make us kinda like him and sorta hope he'll pull through....

One thing that got to me was that, even though Lord Of War takes place over the course of 20 years, there's no sense of time change. Wrinkles and paunches don't appear and hairlines don't recede, though you probably wouldn't expect Cage's cunningly woven thatch to alter much anyway. Fashion stands still too: a suit from the 80s has a different cut from today's though I guess there's not much you can do about army fatigues. In fact the only clue that time has indeed passed is the change from massive, brick-like mobile phones to smaller offerings.

Maybe it's supposed to symbolise the unchanging nature of the world's need for Arms? Doubt it.

Nod bad, then, but no more than that.

The People's Republic of Clogher
The Island (2005, Michael Flippin' Bay)

1.5/5

....or Logan's Wrong.

Not a lot to say really. The opening scene brought back memories of Duran Duran's Rio video. Ewan & Scarlett are both pleasant to look at and Sean Bean always gives good untrustworthy villain (obviously an SAS-trained doctor though).

An unremarkable sci-fi which mutates into the dumbest chase movie I've seen in ages. Not sure if the myriad nods to other films are intentional or clueless but 0.5 marks added for Miss Johansson in a jumpsuit...

The Fat of the Mailbox
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) 5/5

The Pianist
7/10
I don't find the film quite as powerful as Schindler's List, but still it's a brilliant film with some fine acting

I do that with every film I watch anyway, with the lights off, for the full cinematic experience.

it parallels the story of Tutsis refugees during the Hutu militia's breaking of the peace, entering their country, and killing any Tutsis' in sight. the movie does not focus on the war, but on the life of a Hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina (played by Don Cheadle) as he struggles to refuge over a thousand Tutsis' refugees in his hotel, including his own family.

this story, in my opinion was one of the most moving, emotional, and suspensful i have ever seen, making it one of my favorite movies of all time...

Thanks. I'm probably gonna' rent it today.

Little Monsters

Don't ever see movies you remember from your childhood. Especially if you're hungover and it's got Howy Mandell (spelling?) acting like the ultimate crack head.

Crumb

What a lame-ass documentary about a lame-ass dude. David Lynch backs up some whack crap. Dang.

Blood Gnome

Seriousyl. Another suggestion. Don't go lookin' for rad movies when you're hung over either. It's best to just watch The Price is Right, drink tea, and make bagels with bacon. Although, what this movie had going for it, was it's humor. The humor being the director commentary. He should have been honest and said, "You konw what? I know it sucks. You know it sucks. But you rented it and I got paid. Now tell me who should be embarrassed? You suck."
