DAY 166: February 15th, 2009.

The Animatrix

The Animatrix was for those who wanted to learn more about this world that seemed to have so many stories it could tell, it tells the audience bits and pieces of the overall story connected to the films and also showcases some other stories that fill up this Matrix world. All are done in different stylized anime, but the first short Final Flight of the Osiris, is done with computer animation, to most likely capitalize on the craze at the time and bring in the American audience.

The shorts are independent on their own, aside from the two parter of course. Final Flight of the Osiris is a prelude to the events of Reloaded, mostly containing of two big scenes, one is the lead character trying to get the message to Zion, while the other is a simulation fight between two characters with swords and they cut away at pieces of their clothing...why, I don't know.

Program is a bit weak, just a battle between two people in the matrix and can easily be overlooked.

The Second Renaissance, one of the more popular shorts, is the two parter. It's pretty graphic showing violence and nudity. It details the events of the humans versus the machines and the initial wars. One of my favourites as well.

Kid's Story, is another short that sets up some pieces in the sequels. It tells the story of how the kid (see: annoying kid in sequels who opens the doors in the third for the ship to fly in) was able to wake himself up, at least that's what I think happened.

World Record, an interesting concept but again like program, doesn't really add to the overall feel of the Matrix or those stories told within it. The animation itself is quite overdone in features of characters.

Detective Story is another favourite of mine, which could have been a bit longer. It's told and shown, in a film noir style. Bonus points for having Trinity in it.

Matriculation is pure eye candy with a bare bones story.

Beyond, a short in which a kid finds a bug in the system, a warehouse where anything can happen, but people come and debug the system. Very interesting, yet ultimately disappointing.

In the end, unless you're really interesting in seeing more stories being told within the Matrix, The Animatrix is kind of uneven, although the good do outweigh the bad.
