Cloverfield

In the tradition of The Blair Witch Project and [REC] comes a ground-breaking epic from Matt Reeves (The Yards), and producer J.J. Abrams (Armageddon). In my personal opinion, Cloverfield was pure dynamite. It was, and remains to this day, one of my favorite movies EVER. Even though I went to go see this at the movies, and didn't rent it on DVD, I still don't think that the DVD version would be as good as it would have been at the movies. An example: The audio speakers (a theater has the best speakers than naturally anywhere else), and the cam-cord technique makes you so interested in the movie, that while you're watching in theaters, you feel like you're actually there, unlike most films.

On TV, they say in 3-D movies, that "you'll feel like you're actually there." Even though you might argue with this, I have one thing to say: That's not true. 3-D movies grab your attention because the images come out of the screen. The only film released in theaters that makes you feel like you're already there, was Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds Concert. But, besides that... No. That's what Cloverfield does. Unless you go to see at the movies, it really isn't that good, because if you rent it on DVD, you won't feel like you're actually there. That's why I loved this movie so much. But, that's not the only reason. Even though the movie had an excellent cinematic style, the storyline and plot is the best one I've heard in a while.

The monster in the movie wouldn't ACTUALLY attack New York in real life. With a sequel in the works, all the questions that left you hanging, hopefully will be answered in the sequel. If a monster like the one in Cloverfield actually attacked New York in real life, think about that situation... Imagine that somebody had a cam-cord and recorded their entire nightful experience. Then people watched the video, and it was released in theaters as Cloverfield. Even though that's not how it really happened, the point I'm trying to get across here is, the film (the cam-cord, releasing it in theaters) makes it look like if this event happened in real life, what it would like look through the eyes of somebody holding a cam-cord. And, that's what makes the movie so great. I have never heard of ANY of the actors in Cloverfield, but they had excellent acting.

I think Cloverfield should win 2 academy awards for Best Special Effects, and Best Picture. Even if it wins one, it should be for Best Picture. Really, the only actor that I really have heard of before in Cloverfield, was Michael Stahl-David, and he had the 2nd best acting (besides Heath Ledger as The Joker in The Dark Knight), in a movie I have seen this year.

With tons of thrills along the way, suspensful situations, and with questions about the movie that keep on bugging you that only an upcoming sequel can answer, Cloverfield has to be one of the best action movies I have seen this year.

My Rating:

Overall: One of the best movies I've ever seen, with wonderul cinematic stlye, and a plot with questions that leave you hanging. A true film for thriller fans.
