A Night to Remember

99. A Night to Remember 1958
Director: Roy Baker
Screenplay: Eric Ambler
From the book by Walter Lord

Review: The sinking of the Titanic has been rich material for popular movies. I have seen at least three of these myself, and in my book "A Night to Remember" is the best of the bunch. Based on the court case the movie relies on real-life survivor testimony for almost every line and incident, to immensely moving and dignified effect. The James Cameron film seemed to depend on the facts as described in this movie when it bothered to refer to the actual incident. In my opinion Cameron's film relied on a fictional story line involving two lovebirds from different classes. I think we are much better off with what a "Night to remember" gives us. As close to the facts as we can get. The facts as presented in the film ring more true than Cameron's story, provided as much satisfaction in terms of danger, romance, and story provided by Cameron. I was shocked when I realized that it was up for so many academy awards. I was even more shocked to see that it had made it onto AFI's top 100 list.

You may like Titanic, and I don't judge those who do, but if you do like Cameron's version give "A Night to Remember" a Chance before you discount what I have said.
