You're not gonna get better than F. Gary Gray's original with Cube writing his fresh screenplay, and with Chris Tucker as Smokey. This 3rd installment of the ghetto comedy series is trying too hard just like Next Friday did, and it wears you down. The jokes are mostly improvised and it seems like most of the players were just shooting air balls. Nothing is very funny but the energy is still there, though it has no real direction. The story is simple and messy. As far as being a decent Christmas movie, I guess it's OK. There's plenty of lights and trees, and the opening title card sequence is a nice throwback animated piece.
My friend and I noticed, especially in daytime sky shots, that this movie has a very darkened filmic look, almost vignetted around the edges at points, and certainly textural with grain and dirty flurries. It wasn't noise, either. It had that gritty look we both love. So it's definitely a movie-movie. That is going for Friday After Next. Some of the music chosen was nice. Good beats and deep staccato bass lines thumping. Sounded like a 5 string bass or maybe even some moog keys laying it down. It helped a tiny bit with the action and pacing, but didn't save it from its eventual failure to be an engaging film, overall.
I was often embarrassed at how hard the team was trying to be funny. My hand found itself covering my mouth quite a bit. It's not without some chuckles but all in all this movie isn't very good.
