Plot: An anthology horror story of all kinds of twists and turns.

When I was just a wee little lad I discovered this film in the 2011 edition of the book '1001 Movies'. It looked interesting but I kept it in back of my mind until now.

By God, I wasn't expecting this to be so absorbing. I might as well talk about each story individually.

The stories are linked up by a man arriving at a sort-of B&B establishment and being astounded by its similarities to his frequent dreams. The women get slightly annoying as the film goes on as they're cheerfully laughing at stories of insanity and murder, but the men stay level-headed mostly. Must be the effects of the views of women in the early 20th century.

The first story isn't very eventful or interesting. Definitely the weakest of the bunch.

The second is an extremely basic campfire story. The ending can be predicted swiftly by most people. When the expected ending revealed itself a cheeky grin grew on my face.

The third story is a fairly unique story. Ralph Michael is one extraordinary actor. His speech about reality and illusion is marvelous. The ending is fairly tense. The many questions raised are all answered at the end.

The fourth story, written by the famous H.G. Welles, isn't the best but certainly the most unique. The special effects were impressive (except that golf ball flying around the course, that looked pretty fake). Surprisingly enough this story is very humorous, especially that unexpected ending which got a little laugh out of me.

The infamous dummy story is most certainly the best of the bunch. Hugo is so damn creepy.
The subtle nervous expression on Redgrave's face during the only performance shown in the short is bloody ingenious and very ahead of its time for a 40's flick. A lot is left up to interpretation which is an element everyone loves about horror films. The ending was an amazing idea but I feel it could've been better if a few more shots were taken.

The end to the whole film is insane, unexpected, disturbing, satisfying, what else am I supposed to say without spoiling this great film for people who are ignorant of its existence?!

Overall. This film is funny, dark, thought-provoking, engrossing, scary and is a must for fans of 40's flicks and horror movies.

Just don't blame me if Hugo gives you nightmares...

BOO!
