Before writing this review, I had to go over to the Wiki page to confirm some plot details because I was so completely blindsided by how stupid everything was. The page confirmed my initial thoughts, this movie is utter garbage.
Jason Statham has said, that after a few supporting roles; The Expendables franchise, Spy, Fast & Furious series, that he wanted to give his fans a starring role. This is his 'gift' to his fan. I don't know about anyone else, but I would be offended if he thought this was a gift. Maybe it's a gift in the sense that you can get blackout drunk and make fun of it with a bunch of friends. This film is bad.
Bishop is living a quiet life as a retired 'Mechanic'. Everything is nice and peaceful for him until a woman shows up knowing who he is and demanding he take a job. He's surrounded by a bunch of goons to persuade him, but this is JASON MOTHER F'IN STATHAM, you don't persuade him. They attack him and for some reason, they all conveniently forgot to bring guns because they only attack him with their fists. He takes them out one by one, as JASON MOTHER F'IN STATHAM does, jumps off a building onto a gondola ride, is finally shot at, then jumps onto someone hang gliding. I thought I remembered the first film being somewhat realistic, this one tells you right from the start not to expect any form of realism. This film is bad.
Then he goes to a secluded island where he meets Jessica Alba, but she's not there by chance and he discovers that she's actually there to get him to take the job. SHOCKER. She is being forced to do so against her will, she tells him this, he suspects that she is being used so that he can fall in love with her, so she can be kidnapped and used against him to force him in taking the job. The job is killing 3 people, making it look like accidents. Guess what, he falls in love with her, in 2 days it seems, guys come, kidnap her and he is forced to do the job. Yes people, he knows this stranger will be used against him and it happens. What the hell?!?!?!?!?! This film is bad.
So that's the first third.
He then goes to perform the killings, each one more "impossible" than the next. The first he must infiltrate a prison which is on an island, surrounded by sharks. He gets the job done and uses shark repellent to escape. Adam West would be proud. The second, which is not terrible and is what made the film earn this half popcorn rating, is a killing in a pool. This was the selling point sequence as they advertised it in the trailers, on the posters, everywhere. The third kill is Tommy Lee Jones....wow. His screen time must be less than 10 minutes, with a few lines at best. This film is bad.
I can set aside the absurdity of one man taking on dozens of bad guys, one shot kills and never getting injured. This tired and cliched action trope has been part of the genre for decades. I can't get pass the inane reason as to why he is being forced into this job. Jessica Alba's role is terrible. One easy and quick way to fix this is to have him already BE with her. Was it really that hard? Why the hell are you making them JUST MEET, then have her kidnapped a day or two later. How is this a good idea? How does this make any sense? How does this make the movie better? It doesn't. It makes it incredibly frustrating. Even if the whole thing was a set up to kill the man after them, he still plays his stupid game and does the killings. This film is bad.
Mechanic: Resurrection is an embarrassing mess of a film, with bad CGI (everything is green screened) and even worse plot developments. Even for a brainless action film, this film lacks brains.
This film is bad.
