Rob Reiner's early career definitely showed a lot of versatility across multiple films thanks to his handling of richly developed characters, which makes him a good choice for directing Aaron Sorkin's dialogue-heavy screenplay.

Excellent acting in the final act by Cruise and Nicholson made for a very entertaining duel.

In addition to the courtroom drama, the film is also a character study revolving around Cruise's character, Daniel Caffee, a relatively inexperienced attorney trying to crawl from under his father's legacy as an attorney and his lack of actual courtroom experience.
