While this film most certainly has the biggest names of the series, the film as a whole is one of the lamer entries.

Having not seen any of the Saw movies, it's difficult to tell whether this film is a re-thinking of the franchise or a continuation of the last film in the series because the screenwriters and director Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed all of the Saw films but the first one, seem to assume here that....
Thief
So, knowing that Lionsgate was responsible for the Saw franchise, the comedian pitched a "fresh" idea for a sort of sequel/spin-off, which he saw as an opportunity to change, evolve, or progress maybe.
