Where the movie really excels however is the ominous night scenes where you see unsuspecting couples just hoping to spend some quality time with each other, only to get stalked by a sadistic masked killer.

My first knowledge of this film was from how the look of the serial killer, with the bag over his head, inspired Jason Voorhees' look in Friday the 13th Part II (before he got the hockey mask), but I'd never seen the film before.

And while occasionally theres a creepy home movie energy to it---such as in the scene where the Phantom pursues the woman he just shot--generally it just looks flat and muddy.
