The reproductive system of the creature adds to its complexity, and the film also deals symbolically with our own reproductive system I love catching these little metaphors in the film (the obvious phallic design of the creature, umbilicus clear, when they are looking at the tracking device to ....

Alien started an entire sub-genre we now know as sci-fi horror, and has influenced countless films with its effective blend both sci-fi and horror, and is a landmark in both genres.

Ridley Scott's great use of atmosphere is probably on display here more than in any other film, as the visuals of the film add so much to the suspenseful, slow burn nature of the film.
