There's also a great deal of acting ability, with Eastwood turning in one of his best performances ever as high-IQ prison escapee Frank Morris, and Patrick McGoohan performing well as the malicious prison warden.

There are a few slow points throughout, but if anything, they show you just how isolated you were from anything and everything if you were serving time on the rock..

The actual escape is depicted with a similar terseness, characters crawling through the crevices of the prison, ducking out of the sightlines of the guards, their navigating of the prison's architectural rendered with a real tactility.
