Sam and Peter

Do you see Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson as the horror kings that brought us Evil Dead and Braindead repsectively or do you now regard them as Hollywood stars for Spiderman and LOTR. Personally i feel it would be shame if they were forgotten for the early master pieces, the fact that some people are shocked that these guys have made such different films is enough to sadden me. Similaly, you think they'll ever go back to horror? I've seen Sam Raimi is involved in a remake of The Grudge. Im sure this has been done as a poll before, i just like to know if you still recognose them for earlier works opposed to big budget contemporary blockbusters.

Raimi will never be forgotten for "The Evil Dead". I know I'll never forget him for it. But as for Jackson, well, he may not be so lucky...

I didn't know about either before Spiderman or LOTR.

And when I had watched Army of Darkness it was my husband who had pointed out that it was Sam who directed it. I just noticed from IMdB that he was the executive producer for Xena. Both Sam and Peter seem to be very interesting men.

Annie, the one Pete Jackson movie you (and the Horror fanboys) just have to see is Heavenly Creatures. Amazing movie.

I personally will always remember them for just plain dominating any movie they are involved with.

Braindead/Dead Alive is one of my all time favorite movies. I ****ing love it and was blown away when I saw it.

As for them returning to their roots, I don't know what Jackson's plans are, but Sam Raimi deffinetely is. He isn't just involved with the Grudge, he is the executive producer and it is being produced under his new production company Ghost House Pictures, which now has three efforts under its growing umbrella (The Grudge, Boogeyman, and 30 Days of Night). I don't know if he'll ever direct another horror movie, but with Ghost House Pictures he'll always be involved in them.

Do you think thay they're horror roots are apparent in their currnet films? I mean Spiderman 2 had blatant horror moments, chainsaw etc

I don't think so. I think they are both tremendous filmmakers who aren't confined to one very specific genre, such as horror. Take a look at Raimi's For Love of the Game. Best sports movie ever, doesn't have a single hint of horror in it though.

I think the style they developed when they made their pioneering horror flicks does show up in their newer movies. The tragic development of their main characters, the absolute extremes they are pushed to until their mind almost snaps. We saw it in Ash, we've seen it in Peter Parker. We saw it in Lionel, we've seen it in Frodo. For me, what connects those sets of characters is that either director perfectly links the audience with them. We're with them in the tears and in the laughs. That is something someone could say pretty much any director tries to do, but Raimi and Jackson do it flawlessly every single time.
