Looking for a phrase from Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Tools

I just finished watching Roman J. Israel, Esq. At about an hour and 15 minutes into the film, Israel (Denzel) is talking to Maya (Carmen Egojo) outside after their dinner together. He says something that I can't quite make out. It sounds like,
You can't steal the corn in self defense.
This doesn't make sense to me and I can't find any references to it.

Can someone tell me what the phrase actually is and what it means?

Thanks,

-cm

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
I've watched the scene and I understand all the dialogue but I didn't hear anything which sounded like that. Maybe you can quote a line before or after it and I could answer.

I just watched it again. I was wrong about the setting. They are still in that fancy restaurant. He just commented on the duck à l'orange saying something like,
The world is full of wonderful things.
She replies,
Define "wonderful".
That's when he says,
For example, who says that you can't steal a car in self defense?
Maybe my ears were cleaner or something, but this time it was a bit clearer, so I think it is "a car" rather than "corn". But I'm still not sure what it means.

Thanks

- Well...

the world is for wonderful things,

isn't it'?

Define "wonderful."

Okay. As an example...

who says...

you can't steal a car in self-defense?

In reference to what?

If one required a means of escape,

so to speak.

Escape from what?

Possibility to actuality.

I mean, it follows. The logic is valid,

thus the premise is true.

Every weapon is a tool

if you hold it the right way.

You're saying to justify something?

I'm saying...

purity...

can't survive in this world.

Living conditions have bearing.

I'm talking about the burden of activism.

Exactly.

What are you talking about?

My ears are ringing.

It's somebody's phone.

Roman.

Ifs very difficult to be truthful.

Not just with principles...

but with yourself.

To admit that you want something else

and to try and act on it.

But I don't want something else.

I feel blessed to believe in something.

The way you do.

Thanks for dinner.

That was very generous.

The portions were small.

Now that I've got "car" instead of "corn", it makes a little more sense, but it's still quite cryptic. But then I think his character was a bit of an odd duck with some type of unusual mental condition. A lot in that movie was cryptic, at least to me. Maybe it was just over my head.

Thanks for the help.
