The "Barton Fink feeling"?

Barton Fink is one of my favorite Coen Brothers movie. By the way, if you're a fan of John Goodman, this movie is an essential watch!

I think it's a great movie because it sort of explains why many mainstream movies have $200 million budgets yet they're only average at best. People want a mindless movie to follow a formula and they don't care about writing finesse and all that.

Barton Fink is about a pretentious Hollywood writer whose developed a following on his fame alone, but people only appreciate his writing talents on a superficial level.

Likewise, Barton (Hollywood's intellectual savior) talks so much about appealing to the common man with his writing, yet refuses to even listen to the experiences of everyday people.

At one point, a film director in the movie says "Barton, your writing just doesn't have the Barton Fink feeling. We'll hire someone else who can make it more Barton Fink-like"

It kind of reminds me of other writers and directors in Hollywood. People always talk about movies having a Tarantino feeling, or Tarantino movies lacking a Tarantino feeling.

The movie can also be a jab at some of the Coen Bros fans themselves, who often can't describe why they like their films aside from the boilerplate "Well, it's a Coen Bros movie".

One of my favorites as well. I love the Coen's earlier sense of humor, and Barton Fink has a bizarre atmosphere and looming sense of surrealism that really catches my fancy. For more of the 'Barton Fink feeling': I think the weirdness, time period, release date, and color scheme make it good for a double billing with Cronenberg's Naked Lunch.

Yes, surreal is the right word. It's a farcical movie and not a literal one. All of the drama and horror elements are purely there to enhance the comedy of how poor Barton just has to have everything go wrong while he's trying to write his script.

The movie makes good use of imagery and iconography to represent certain emotions.
