Space Porn

Tools

Let's post space porn. Or just look at it.

I'll kick it off with some basics.

Obligatory "Pillars of Life."

Can't have space porn without earthly long exposure shots.

Mad ups from our only extrasolar excursion.

A little perspective (usually) never hurt anyone.

Speaking of which...
Here's some stats that show how big things are in comparison with one another.

If the sun was only 1 inch (25.5 millimtres... 2.5 centimetres)... basically the size of a large marble...

Mercury would be 0.0034 of an inch (0.001 of a millimetre) and would be 3 feet away (1.05 metres)

Venus would be 0.0086 of an inch (0.2 of a millimetre) and would be 6 feet away (1.97 metres)

Earth would be 0.0091 of an inch (0.2 of a millimetre) and would be 8 feet away (2.72 metres)

Mars would be 0.0048 of an inch (0.1 of a millimetre) and would be 13 feet away (4.15 metres)

Jupiter would be 0.1027 of an inch (2.6 millimetres) and would be 46 feet away (14.19 metres)

Saturn would be 0.0836 of an inch (2.1 millimetres) and would be 85 feet away (26.04 metres)

Uranus would be 0.0337 of an inch (0.8 of a millimetre) and would be 171 feet away (52.37 metres)

Neptune would be 0.326 of an inch (0.8 of a millimetre) and would be 269 feet away (82.11 metres)

Pluto... would be 0.001 of an inch (0 millimetres).... and would be 354 feet away (107.90 metres)

I think it's quite a testament to the Sun's power.

If the Sun was only 1 inch across, Pluto would be so small you could barely measure it, it's over 100 metres away and the Sun's gravity still has a hold on it.

Awesome.

PLANET OF THE MONTH: NEPTUNE

Neptune is my favorite planet. Ever since I was a child, I've been fascinated by it. I love the way it looks and I love its name.

I love Jupiter.

Something about a giant ball of gas and no knowing what's at the very very center... apparently Jupiter was almost a Sun at one point... all it needed was a few extra chemicals when it formed, and it would have ignited.

Also, I watched that comet hit Jupiter back in the 1990s... that was well exciting.

And the Great Red Spot... a storm that's so big the Earth could actually fit inside it 3 times over.

Jupiter is scary. It's a huge beast. The father of all of the planets in our solar system.

I've seen it in the night sky before, have you?

Yes, I remember that comet (or was it comets?) hitting Jupiter back in like 1995 or something like that. That was freaky to witness. I didn't see it happen live, did you?

Yeah I watched it live. The comet broke up then hit the planet over and over making a bunch of pock marks along the surface.

I just found out... Jupiter's core... under the extreme pressures, it's believed that the gas that makes up the planet's body is compressed and heated so high near the centre that it becomes a solid.

Solid Hydrogen and solid Oxygen, solid Helium and so on.

That's just scary.

Neptune has it's own Great Blue Spot, and it's more ferocious than Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Neptune's actually the planet with the strongest winds in our solar system. And it rains diamonds.

I've always thought that I was an alien from Neptune. I really think it's true. That sounds like my kind of planet.
