Rush Hour 3

Female assassin extraordinaire.
ok, i love me some chris tucker. maybe it's the fried chicken references, i don't know, but i love him.

the thing for me and action is that i generally don't like my action heroes "funny" per se, I like them wry (Die Hard) or tortured (Blade). so i never went crazy for watching a Jackie Chan movie, even though I love watching someone kick some ass with martial arts. (oooh, the memories of Jean Claude Van Damme's early movies ...)

so when I saw Rush Hour, like most of america, i was totally blown away and thrilled. it was like, what Ace Ventura: Pet Detective did to comedy, it was just a whole new pairing, out of left field that WORKED and it revived that "cool and happy and in on something" feeling of the old day action movie: remember Beverly Hills Cop? Who do you think Chris Tucker is emulating, hmmm?

So right, comments re: Tucker's becoming a caricature. He totally is. Both he and Chan have watered down their characters and it is clear they were having fun recapturing a theme but it is also clear they are not as invested in making the movie truly entertaining in a positive, genuine way, in an earnest way, like their first one.

Chan's suddenly totally negative all the time, and he treats Tucker like a nagging wife. Tucker IS a nagging wife, no longer mostly funny and slightly perplexing/annoying, and now mostly annoying and occasionally funny.

The laughs do come - but only when the pair are natural and not trying to hard. The porn movie joke was off the cuff and under Chan's breath - so natural it shocked me because it's not something his character would usually say but he didn't sound forced.

Unlike a lot of the other scenes in the movie, for both of them - it was like these two were forcing the dialogue, the feeling of the original, and that in truth it just wasn't there ...

and they both knew it. it was way below par compared to what we know they can do. yeah it had some laughs but when you've seen to guys turn out some amazing comedy and action before, you're definitely going to feel cheated coming out of this. this isn't my review, btw, i think i'm too disheartened to actually write one.

BETRAYAL! i was SO looking forward to tucker, you have no idea, he's like, so my favorite. i love him more than chris rock. I DO! it's something about that big old mouth and all the crazy mess that comes out of it. but only when it's funny ... only when it's funny.

*shakes head*
