Jurassic World (2015) - Colin Trevorrow

- This is by far the best sequel/prequel of the original Jurassic Park movie. Highly entertaining and visually perfect I appreciate this flick and it worth the 124min of viewing. The Storyline and the ending dyno battle was epic. Bryce Dallas Howard is HOT.

First movie watched in a while, since I broke off my movie-a-day back on June 16th.

Anyways, as I sort of predicted, this rewatch made my rating sneak a tiny bit up. By no means is it a perfect film, but if you buy into the fun it's one of the most adrenaline-fueled insane explosive action movies ever made. Holy crap what a ride. The last 30 minutes are still one of the best and most impressive action set-pieces I've seen. And I guess many set pieces in this film could be talked about in that way. Cleopatra Jones (1973)

Good actioner from exploitation director Jack Starrett (Race With the Devil, Slaughter). Tamara Dobson is Cleopatra Jones, a "Special Agent"---she flashes her credentials but it doesn't really say which division she works for---probably the DEA since she's going after drug-runners who are loading the streets with hard drugs. There are some good co-stars here; Bernie Casey as Cleo's love who runs a center to help people get off drugs; Antonio "Huggy Bear" Fargas as a local drug lord who tries to maintain his own army; and Shelley Winters as "Mommy," the head drug lord who controls everything. Lots of fistfights, gunfights, car chases, and especially Cleopatra using her karate skills to kick butt all through the movie. Great 70's era fun.

Man Bites Dog used to be in my Top 10. Glad to know you love it as well, GS.
Still is in my top 10 because it's quality.

dadgumblah, take a look at Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold. I think I prefer it to the first, though it's been a while.

When Marnie was there 5/5. This movie, it just, I don't know, it was so beautiful without relying on being sappy. I love the characters, I love the animation, I love the story, the ending was incredible, it was all around just enjoyable. There might have been a few moments where I wish things weren't so unsolved while the film was happening, but the way it wrapped it all up, I can't even believe how good that was. The last scene with Marnie in it was just so wonderful. When Marnie was there just might be one of Studio Ghibli's crowning achievements. It manages to create great emotions without making you feel like it's being forced, or sappy, or stereotypical or anything other than the amazingness that it was. I have not enjoyed an animated film like that since The Wind Rises, which just proves how wonderful Studio Ghibli is. That film was simply a treat to watch, and I loved every second of it.

The Equalizer (2014)

-

Pretty run of the mill revenge/action/thriller except for the performances of Denzel Washington, who elevates any movie he's in, and Marton Csokas(below with Washington), who plays the main villain. We all know Washington is going to do his thing. The villain is effective because he effortlessly goes back and forth between calm and vicious. The downside of the movie is the action scenes, which are just so standard today. I miss the wow factor of movies like Die Hard and Aliens. If a movie goes big, it's a superhero or transformers type movie. There seems to be not much in-between in recent years. The best parts of this movie are the verbal face-offs and cat and mouse. It gets a little long in the end, but I enjoyed this.

Thoughts posted in HoF thread...soon.

Seconds (1966)

The cinematography at first traps you in, then the acting and carefully constructed editing and movement of characters, looming over in a quasi-noir trance never lets you out. Great film. Didn't expect to like it very much.

... but damn the cinematography. I haven't liked a film's cinematography this much since Woman in the Dunes. I'm pretty sure my rating for this film will go up on repeat viewing.

I thought "The Equalizer" and "John Wick" were totally one sided movies. You have a guy with one reason for revenge going around and shooting all the bad guys. These movies had no room to be good or bad because of lack of complexity. "John Wick" was slightly better, because it made less effort on moral level and stuck to being plain shootout.

Woah, just noticed its in your Top 10. That was a surprise, made me look even more forward to the revisit.

American Psycho (2000)

Overall a pretty fun movie but I had a couple gripes. The biggest one is that I really wasn't a fan of Christian Bale's character, he came across as just annoying most of the time as opposed to the cool sadistic sociopath I thought he was gonna be. He did have a couple funny quirks though like the business cards and "I gotta return some videotapes" line. It also doesn't help that I'm just not a huge Christian Bale fan to begin with, I mean he's okay and I don't hate him or anything but I've just never been too crazy about any movie I've seen him in.

The other gripe is that I felt the ending was a little underwhelming, but don't want to spoil that for any who haven't seen it yet.

There are plenty of positives though, a lot of the violence and craziness this film is known for is pretty well-done; the plot itself is pretty good also, I just think that if I liked the leading performance a bit more this is a movie I would've loved, not just liked.
