Willis is one of my favorites as well. It's weird but I like him in a lot of the stuff you don't seem to, his non-action stuff (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, 12 Monkeys), although I think Die Hard with a Vengeance is a tremendously fun movie, and I do enjoy Die Hard. I just think he really got to forge his own style in stuff like 12 Monkeys, where he is still a tough guy, but shows a vulnerable side that makes him seem a bit more human than many people who attempt similar roles.

I feel Die Hard II was complete crap.

I agree on Die Hard 2. It sucked. There should have been three brothers instead and have the movies around them. Get what I'm saying? I pretty much like him in everything, especially in The Fifth Element and, of course, Die Hard. That's when I started to like him, after seeing those two films. I love them both. They're my top two movies of his.

I also love him in the ones you said. He's an all around good actor.

William H. Macy

Date of Birth
13 March 1950
Miami, Florida, USA

Short Biography
Although not entirely a household name, William H. Macy is a recognisable face and respected supporting actor. As with many actors, his professional aspirations were initially not for performance, but rather veterinary medicine. When he found himself a student of playwright-director David Mamet at Vermont's Goddard College however, his goals changed. Together with Joe Mantegna and Dennis Franz, Macy became a member of "Mamet's Mafia", the foremost interpreters of the auteurs stage work, later rejoining Mamet and Steven Schachter to found the St. Nicholas Theater in Chicago.

On the small screen, Macy appeared for four years on the hit series "ER" in the recurring role of Dr. Morgenstern, but it was the Coen brothers who directed Macy's film breakthrough in the part of Jerry Lundegaard in the quirky "Fargo", a part which earned Macy an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

With his wife Felicity Huffman, Giancarlo Esposito and TV stars Camryn Manheim and Kristen Johnson, Macy is a member of the NY-based Atlantic Theater Company.

Married since 1997, he and his wife have two children.

Why I love William H. Macy
Macy is one of my favourite actors. A consistent stoic supporting actor, he has the ability to convey pathos and charm, whether it be as the gay sheriff in Happy, Texas; the unlikely superhero in Mystery Men; or the once famous child star in Magnolia, his portrayals show depth and honesty. I think my favourite performance is of George Parker, the conservative husband and father in Pleasantville, whose world falls apart when modernity is thrust upon him. While not every movie he has appeared in have been great, Macy can be relied upon to provide an unforgettable performance.

You may have noticed an omission in the listings above. I just haven't got round to seeing Seabiscuit yet!

I’ve been an admirer of Crispin’s work since I first saw him in The River’s Edge. No matter what role he takes on in the films he plays in, he is immediately recognizable and likable and always pleases me. Even in poor movies, such as Charlie’s Angels, he can make me like the film just because of his role. I still get excited seeing him play the badass in that one. I just wish he could’ve allowed to be a little bit tougher, like putting one of them in the hospital. After Willard, I hope he is recognized as somebody who can carry a film, because he can.

COMMENT:
Who doesn’t love Clint? From early on in his Rawhide days, he has shown that he is the lead, no matter who plays opposite. But no matter how much I love him as an actor, it’s his directorial work that will be his real claim to fame in the history of film. He has given us one of the most enigmatic character’s in cinematic history as The Man With No Name, and has given us one of the greatest western films and central characters with his Unforgiven and Bill Munny. He is a true living legend.

COMMENT:
This really is a thread about actors and actresses, but I won’t split any more hairs than that one. The Coen’s are ‘one’ of the only director’s that causes me to go see a film on opening day. My first experience was Raising Arizona when I was a teen-ager back in the mid-80’s. I was hooked after that. Even their worst films are better than a lot of other directors best work. Their original witty dialogue, masterful story weaving, and air for flair, makes them masters in a world of posers.

There is no other actor that can deliver scathing or sarcastic remarks as deadpan as Kevin. His delivery with his voice and facial expressions make him one of the most original actors working today in Hollywood. I like him best when he plays mean spirited characters. He is just so good at being intellectually ruthless and unforgiving.

There are a good number of excellent actors working today that could easily be labeled as being ‘not so handsome’, but these guys can still draw an audience. Too bad more production companies don’t want to risk their bigger budget films to these people. I’d take 10,000 Paul Rudd’s for one Hoffman, Reilly, Macy, and Buscemi, any day. These guys have this acting thing down, don’t they?

Traditionally ugly, Steve-O still has everybody thinking he is the coolest guy on the planet; me included. Playing a lead character in Reservoir Dogs sure didn’t hurt that thinking. Following up as a cooler than hell stoner/rocker in Airheads didn’t hurt either. Nowadays, whenever Steve-O shows up on the screen, you can literally hear the audience sigh in satisfaction that his presence is there. He is a favorite of nearly everybody’s.

The first time I had ever seen Toshirô was in Hell in the Pacific. I was just a kid, but could recognize how spectacular he was…and he didn’t even have any English dialogue for me to understand. But then, just last year, I found out about how special Kurosawa films are and saw this man, who I didn’t even connect to the other film, for what I thought the first time, and I was blown away. Nobody can play the stoic man as well as Toshirô.

I’ve liked Uma for awhile now, but never considered her one of my favorites, though I did think she was sexy as hell. Yet, Kill Bill Vol. 2 has really made me think more of her. Her acting is what supports that film more than anything else, because there isn’t a lot of action involved, and the other actors only have limited screen time in comparison. She is something special, and look forward to seeing her in more films.

Kiefer is not even close to being one of my favorite actors. Not because I think he is miserable or anything, but rather because the majority of his films have been lemons. Still, there are times where he shines. I haven’t seen his TV show 24 yet, mainly because I’m too busy watching movies to dedicate the time for a television series, but I hope that because of its popularity, Kiefer gets some more solid roles in film.

Hugely successful today because of his role in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, he is finally being recognized for his greatness. I just think its ridiculous that last years Oscar’s was his first nomination. I can think of five years in all where he should have garnered nominations. Fortunately, he’s still young and amazingly handsome.

I remember when I saw Primal Fear after it was first released on VHS, my wife and I were both amazed with Ed’s performance, much like everybody else who saw it. He has a charisma and natural strength that cannot be denied, and carries even fair to poor films, making them just a little better just because he’s in them. A bona-fide future Oscar recipient if there ever was one.

Jack is another guy like Clint; who doesn’t just worship this guy? Old, young, slim, or fat, Jack has a way of making you think, “This is one cool cat, man!” One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was my first experience with him. It was filmed in my State’s Mental Hospital, so it was a big deal for the family to see it when it first came out. I was still a little kid at that time, but I still remember the impression of sadness that it left with me. My Aunt had to console me for quite awhile on the way home after the film.

I haven’t seen many of Katherine’s films, but with what I’ve seen (and what everybody else says), I know she was, and always will be, one of the great ones. I loved her regardless of what type of character she played; funny, like Bringing Up Baby, or serious, like The African Queen. The only thing I’d give her crap about (if she were still alive) is the company she chose to keep. Hey lady! It’s Michael Jackson! C’mon!!!

Cary was one of the greatest comic actors who ever lived, and also one of the most incredibly handsome. It is impossible not to like him, regardless of how good the film is. When I was a kid, there were two local stations that only played old black and white films. That was my main staple as far as movies went, and I remember getting really excited when it was a Cary Grant movie (a close second behind Abbot & Costello).

I really can’t see how he can be a favorite already because he hasn’t really done much yet, but from what I’ve seen he does a descent job. The Green Mile has him playing one of the most detestable characters from its decade, but that still doesn’t make him a favorite. I’d rather root for Jeffrey Combs.

Now here’s a real class act. I had an extremely difficult time answering my own questions here because he kicked ass in nearly everything he ever did. I can’t, for the life of me, remember a role he didn’t nail, or a movie that he starred in, that wasn’t great. How many other actors in the entire history of cinema can that be said about? Humphrey is arguably the greatest actor who ever lived.

I don’t know a whole lot about Sean. I know that most of his roles have been in not so great movies, and that more often than not, he plays the heavy. But I’ll say this: I loved the way he played Borimor. Borimor’s death was very moving for me, with the exception that he should have died after at least the third arrow, but that’s a minor thing. I hope he escapes the typecasting that he’s a victim to.

I remember watching Morgan in [i]The Electric Company when I was a little rug rat (that show kind of scared me sometimes because it could get so eerily weird). Just about every movie that I’ve seen since then has been played exceptionally by him, and some of them have become great films primarily because of him. Driving Miss Daisy will always be one of my all time favorite movies because Morgan was just so wonderful in it (that’s not saying Tandy wasn’t). I always look forward to see what he’s going to do next.

I feel so damn sorry for Michael. Not only is he wildly talented, but he has always been a man that everyone can respect. As far as his library of work, however, it’s not terribly impressive. Actually, I think his best work was on television on his shows Family Ties and Spin City. Unfortunately, we won’t get the chance to see if he could have become as much of a film legend as he was with television.

I am having a nervous breakdance
Impressive as always, Slay!

I would like to add a category - Most Overlooked Film. "Underrated" is not always a good term when it comes to films that are rated highly but seen by very few.

When it comes to Steve Buscemi, I would like to recommend the overlooked and very buscemish film Living In Oblivion (1995), directed by Tom DiCillo. Here Buscemi plays a frustrated low budget film director and it's like the role was written especially for him. He is brilliant in it.

Slay has allready mentioned The Apostle (1997), directed by and starring Robert Duvall, but it can't be mentioned enough. During recent years this film has become one of my all time favourites. You can feel the passion for the project, Duvall's life long dream it seems, in everybody involved. You might think this masterpiece is about religion exclusively but it's about so much more.

Speaking about Duvall and The Apostle leads me to think of an actor who starred in Duvall's film, Billy Bob Thornton. His appearance in The Apostle was a thank you gesture towards Duvall for appearing in Thornton's excellent Sling Blade (1996). Thornton both directed and played the leading role in it and it's another gem not talked about enough. Thornton is terrific if not brilliant and all other actors are great too. Another excellent performance worth mentioning in Sling Blade is the one by the late great J.T. Walsh as an instituionalized psycho killer.

Billy Bob and J.T. are worth a post each in this thread, don't you think Slay??

My actor is Rutger,I love his work and all the movies he made.I'm a total FAN!

Rutger Oelsen Hauer Height
6' 2" (1.88 m) Mini biography

Blonde, blue-eyed, tall and handsome Dutch actor Rutger Hauer has an international reputation for playing everything from romantic leads to action heroes to sinister villains. The son of actors, Hauer was born in Breukelen Holland. Because his parents were often touring, Hauer and his three sisters were raised by a nanny. A bit of a rebel during his childhood, he chafed at the rules and rigors of school and was often getting into mischief. His grandfather had been the captain of a schooner, and at age 15, Hauer ran away to work on a freighter for a year. Like his great-grandfather, Hauer is color-blind, which prevented him from furthering his career as a sailor. Upon his return, he attended night school and started working in the construction industry. When he again bombed at school, his parents enrolled him in drama classes. Fancying himself a poet, Hauer spent most of his time writing poetry and hanging out in Amsterdam coffee houses instead of studying. He got expelled for poor attendance and afterward spent a brief time in the Dutch Navy. Deciding he didn't like military life, Hauer convinced his superiors that he was mentally unfit and was sent to a special home for psych patients. It was an unpleasant place, but Hauer remained there until he convinced his ranking officers that the military really did not need him.

Couldn't agree more. The Apostle lingered in my mind for awhile after watching it until I sat down and watched it a few more times. It's become one of my tip five favorite films of all-time, actually, and I'd recommend it to anyone with an appreciation for passionate acting. You're right, Duvall clearly threw himself into the role, which should come as no surprise seeing as how he directed and financed it, as well.

The funny thing is, I was sitting there watching it for what was maybe the third time, and I suddenly had an epiphany: Robert Duvall was not a preacher! He wasn't the character! He was an actor. I knew this all along, of course, but it never truly "occurred" to me. At no point did I think "that's Robert Duvall." If I watch Terminator 3, at some point I'm going to think about Ah-nuld cruising around in his Hummer. But with The Apostle, I had to see it several times before I even processed the fact that it's all pretend. That's how wrapped-up in the role Duvall appears to be.

The subject matter itself is quite interesting, too, regardless of your religious affiliation. A lot of the preachers in the film were real, and I've read that many were not given lines; just an open mike to preach as they normally would. It's pretty inspiring to see people with such incredible dedication and truly genuine enthusiasm for what they believe.

Trivia.......
– Actress Joan Fontaine is Olivia’s younger sister.

– She sued Warner Brothers studio over a contract despute. She had been reprimanded and suspended for 6 months by the studio when she became unhappy with the roles she was offered to her and refused them. When her 7 year contract was up with Warner’s they claimed she still owed them six more months because of that suspention. She fought back (which could have killed her career) and won in court. A law was put into place and named after her (The De Havilland Law) that limited contracts to 7 seven years.
