if I want to laugh, I need it mainlined with stand-up comedy. It's very rare I find any humor in movies in the "comedy" category. I never liked slapstick, screwball, or stupid. I seem to like angry behavior, someone calling out bullhit, getting to the truth, exposing something essential flippantly, or things that are well-written (usually inside laughter).

I'm thinking of funny parts, and they're all in dramas.
-Harry and Tonto
-La Strada
-One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
-Buffalo '66

or that scene with Joe Pesci in "Casino" when he starts yelling about Charley M.

I actually prefer slapstick and screwball and wish they would bring that type of humor back, rather than a lot of comedies nowadays trying to be more "sophisticated", and not being able to push the silliness as far as you can as a result.

I would say the opposite, comedy these days is too heavily biased towards these types rather than wit.

Well maybe sophisticated is not the right word, but it seems that the last few are trying to be more than they are. Do you have any examples of biased ones?

I mentioned this not too long ago, but I recently got a chance to watch Battlefield Earth for the first time.
As a sci-fi fan I'd always heard this was one of the worst movies ever made - it was indeed bad, but its badness had me laughing through most of it. I realize it was meant to be taken somewhat seriously, but to me it came off more like Spaceballs (a sci-fi spoof). I especially thought Travolta's character and delivery was hilarious (some of it meant to be that way, but I saw all of it that way).

I have yet to see Battlefield Earth, but it sounds fun, corny but fun. One of the funniest-'serious' movies I've watched was Empire of the Ants (1977)

If you get the opportunity to see it, keep your eye on Travolta & Forrest Whitaker (and their interaction / relationship). Then just imagine putting their characters in a sit-com.

I'd also advise some beers while watching!

I got the feeling that if someone edited the movie to only the Travolta scenes (and those with Whitaker) it would've turned out as a very amusing little short film!

Another way to look at it is "What if Vinnie Barbarino had been born as an alien on a different planet then came to Earth?"

Nostalgia Critic introduced me to Battlefield Earth. It was on Netflix so I was going to watch all the hilarity but my spouse couldn't handle how dumb it was.

I’d agree with OP for the most part, exceptions such as Dr. Strangelove are pure comedy though. But yes, comedic scenes in Pulp Fiction, Raging Bull, and King of Comedy are often funnier than straight up comedies.

I love bad movies. If you enjoyed Battlefield Earth, you should give The Room, Troll 2 and Manos: The Hands of Fate a try.

I think Valley of the Dolls is funnier than 60% of the alleged comedies that I've seen.
Similar with many of the "Blaxploitation" movies of the 70's - a lot of them weren't necessarily intended as comedies, but come off as laughable with their stereotypes of a particular time period and sheer campiness.
