Welcome to the human race...
Oh, my bad.

EDIT: Wait, idea - just one vote to decide which of the last lot (with four votes) gets to make the list and which don't?

Besides, I've already spent an insane amount of time on this. The next step is to have them all debate it, fuss about it, or whatever they want to do until I'm done with the holiday. After that, I'll continue on with it.

I would think you hold a preferential voting session for every tie - take all the movies with, say, four votes each, and number them from top to bottom. Do that for every tie, set up individual threads in the Tournaments sub-forum and whatnot, see how it turns out.
I like this idea. It sounds like a pain in the ass, but if you'd like to do it and need any help, I'll volunteer.

As for the list, it's pretty solid, although I'm disappointed not to see some of my favorites on there: Kill, Baby...Kill!, Slither...you guys is weird. Of course, you could say I'm the weird one, but that's a given.

It's also interesting that Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 are tied. I voted for Evil Dead 2, but not Evil Dead, which means that someone must have voted for Evil Dead and not Evil Dead 2, which is a much stronger movie, IMO.

which means that someone must have voted for Evil Dead and not Evil Dead 2, which is a much stronger movie, IMO.
Actually, five people voted for both, two people voted for the first one, and two people voted for the second one.

Very happy and surprised to see that "The Omen" beat out "The Exorcist"!!
"The Omen" has always been (at least critically) in the shadow of "The Exorcist".

Give me "The Omen" any day.

What the hell is "The Lost Boys" doing there!? And above stuff like "The Evil Dead".
You crazy guys!

I'm still lost on this order thing though.

We are having a popularity order for the 100 films in the end surely?
Is the alphabetical aspect just for this preliminary list?

As for ties...Surely we have to vote again on them later? You can't have a 100 list with 3 films all voted as the best.
Do we not have to break these ties? Or not. I don't know...I'm old, simple and lost.

For now I just want opinions on everything. I'm not doing anything else with the list, until after Halloween.

Ditto on The Omen. I voted for it, but not The Exorcist. I think I waited way too late in life to watch that movie. I was expecting a lot more. I was expecting to be scared a lot more. Actually, it didn't scare me at all. Honestly, most movies don't "scare" me. I think the word excited/exciting describes them best for me.

No wonder you had a headache.... I think I might have taken the list to use for target practice a few times... and I don't mean it's bad by saying that... just that it had to have been a nightmare to sort...

Thanks for all your hard work Lisa... I'll think about a way to break the ties when I when I'm a little more awake...

My life isn't written very well.
Yeah, thanks Lisa! The list looks great! I'm surprised at some of the titles and their position according to number of votes, i.e The Decent made the top 20?! And I don't recall Splinter even being on the list....wait, let me check again.....

Nope, not there.

Now I've got to see everyone's list! I am a true horror movie aficionado; I've been watching these things since I was 9. I just wonder if some members simply put "horror" movies on the list as they recall seeing them, or put thought into each one based on influence, quality and true examples of the genre (Shaun of the Dead?!--more of a parody).

It'd be interested to see the list of movies that got less than 4 votes as well....

Thanks Lisa again! A great and time consuming job--well done!

Yeah, I just copy/pasted each title from random lists. I didn't check the dates for accuracy. I only made sure a date was there. More are probably wrong. It wasn't until I posted the list last night, that I realized I used someone's The Village Of The Dammed (1960). I had to drop the "The", and switch one of the Ms to an N.
r3port3r66, the only Splinter I know, runs around underground with some giant turtles. I'm also a true horror fan, and I hate that some of these are on this list. They have their own lists.
Thanks Caity, and I for sure wanted to shoot this list. I had a horrible migraine yesterday, while finishing this up. Especially on the few letters I came up short on. One thing is for sure . . . I did not miss a movie anywhere.

Awesome job so far Lisa. I do think we need to give some thought to tiebreaking; using mentions is more likely to reward solid, well-known films, whereas some kind of voting system, as Iro suggested, rewards just how much we like each film. But this is shaping up really nicely and I really appreciate what a good job you've done putting it together. Like someone else mentioned earlier, I'll be glad to volunteer whatever time is necessary to break ties, pare things down, etc.

Re: the whole "what constitutes horror?" debate. I dig the rationale behind everyone's various definitions, but I think using the supernatural as a guide has some logistical problems. Mainly, you can watch 99% of a film and not know if it's "horror." You can be scared all movie, but if you find out in the end that the ghost isn't real, does it suddenly cease to be a horror film? Heck, what about Halloween? I may be forgetting something, but I think that Michael Myers' strength sort of implies a supernatural element, but I don't know if it's spelled out right away. And, of course, in some films these things are left up in the air complete, or spelled out in sequels.

I think the word horror itself is the best barometer we have. If it's a film that tries to scare you, it's probably a horror film. I realize this still puts us on a fine line with films like The Silence of the Lambs, which aim to thrill a bit more than scare, but I think there's a lot of overlap between horror and thrills, anyway, that can't really be avoided.

Just my opinion, naturally. Though not that I've typed this up, I can't help but wonder if it deserves it's own thread. Yay/nay?

Hate "The Others". A tediously obvious twist that takes what seems like 2 hours of nothing to finally appear. A 30 minute TV episode stretched to hellish lengths.

Blimey! 7 films in 5th place!

Hey! Where's "C.H.U.D"?

Happy New Year from Philly!
How many movies are on this list, Lisa? Is it the top 100 or everything that was mentioned?

By the way Prospero, why don't you like The Shining?

I can't really put my finger exactly on what is horror and what isn't. It's kinda like art or pornography, in that you know it when you see it but everyone sees it differently. However, these are the films from the 100 that I didn't watch as horrors.

Spoorloos
Peeping Tom
Angel Heart
Shadow of the Vampire
The Silence of the Lambs
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956)
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
The Hitcher
The Sixth Sense
Tremors
Witchfinder General
Misery
The Birds
Alien
Jaws
Shaun of the Dead
Psycho
Aliens

Some of them I included on my own list, just because I thought that they'd make the 100, so I may as well put them on too and bump them up the list(Psycho, Jaws, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The Hitcher and Peeping Tom). I'm not saying they're absolutely not horror films and shouldn't be on the list, just that, until a few years ago, I'd never considered them horror films and was surprised when I found out that others did. If we're going to include them as horror films, then I'd be happy to see all of them on the list.

Some of you may've noticed that I've included the 1956 version of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and not the 1978 version. The reason for this is that, for reasons I don't know (or can't remember) the '78 version seemed a lot more like a horror film than the '56 version and not just because it was in colour and was more modern. There was just something about it and, to put to bed any fears of favouritism, while I put the '56 version on my list (because I love it) I didn't include the '78 version, because I don't like it. So I'm actually ruling out a film I love for a film that I don't even like.

However, unless the majority want them on there, then I'd like to 'lose' the following:

Spoorloos
Angel Heart
Silence Of The Lambs
Shaun Of The Dead
Aliens

And, even though everyone else has mentioned it, I'd like to do the same, thank you so much Lisa for all of this and please don't feel the need to apologise for not doing it all in a couple of days. It's obviously a lot of work and we all appreciate what you do here.
