You all need to stop looking up John Sayles on the IMDb and going by his work as a screenwriter. Yes, I know that's listed first there, but he is a director. A great director. The flicks he wrote for Roger Corman while he was learning the biz are hardly "his" movies.

Geesh. Get thee all to the rental stores ASAP. Sayles has many great films to his credit, but I recommend Lone Star, Matewan and Eight Men Out as an introduction.

Well, it's more than a bit of a stretch to say DePalma's The Untouchables is "based on" the 1959-1963 TV series. They are both based, loosely, on the historical events of course. And none of the supporting agents around Ness from the series were used for the feature film, but instead new and completely different characters were created. Same name, same basic idea (both can credit Ness' book as distant source material), but that David Mamet scripted movie was definitely not born from the TV show.

OK, while I don't approve, I can at least understand how someone who sees mostly mainstream crap hasn't gotten around to Mike Leigh, John Sayles or even the great Akira Kurosawa (and this thread is proving that sad fact even more than I feared). But you've never seen a COEN BROTHERS film?!? How is this even frippin' possible?

And by the by, Deep Impact is not a Steven Spielberg film, fer cripe's sake. He and his company produced it, but it ain't one of "his". The IMDb is a tool, people. Learn how to use it or step away. Steve's only directed twenty-some feature films, many of them among the most popular and successful movies of all time. Don't tell me you've never seen one of them either.
