I think they were filmed literally back to back... whereas Hobbit, the "back-to-back" thing meant at the same time.
LOTR did the same thing.
They were filming stuff for Two Towers and Return Of The King before they'd even wrapped on Fellowship.

Actually, thinking about it... I think the last scene actually filmed for the entire LOTR trilogy, was Serkis doing reaction shots for Gollum... for scenes in The Two Towers.
