Amongst my favourite sci-fi movies would be these:

1. Contact
2. 2001 : A Space Odyssey
3. Silent Running (Bruce Dern, 1970s)
4. Star Trek The Motion Picture
5. 2010
6. Solaris

Taking care of planet Earth
You know, as much as I feel I ought to say something like 2001 I'm going to stick my neck out and say The Thing(1982)

The John Carpenter version is simply fantastic, the music, the setting, the story and the acting are all, for me, perfect. I give it a 10/10, I can go back to this anytime and thoroughly entertained everytime.

2001 A space odissey and 12 monkeys are the only sci-fi movies in my top 50.

Hows Clockwork orange a sci-fi??

Oldies but goodies...

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Forbidden Planet

Best ever is really tough...

Alien

I had a thirst for similar movies after seeing it but nothing has matched it...in how many years? Alien stands alone.

It also had one of the best sequels ever.
