There's a feature on the How the West was Won Blu-Ray called smilebox that makes it look like cinerama. Will that look good on a 50 inch TV, or is it made for projectors?
Will the smilebox on How the West was Won blu-ray look good on a regular TV?
It is not made for projectors, no. "Smilebox" is the closest way yet to replicate Cinerama on a TV screen, but frankly nothing will ever replicate Cinerama effectively. Smileboxing is a better compromise than straight letterboxing or 16x9 enhancement, and it is designed for televisions and conventional movie screens.
Saw a presentation by the guys who invented "smilebox" a while back, a recount of that HERE. Definitely do check out that terrific documentary, Cinerama Adventure, which is included on that How the West Was Won BluRay disc.
