Post a picture of political cartoons

Tools

I enjoy political cartoons very much because they often in one image depict the emotions and ideas of certain schools of thought.

This thread is for those pictures.

The rules of the thread are as follows:

1.) Politics are inherently heated so I will ask all to respect others' right to post something they liked.

2.) A picture is worth a thousand words. If you have to explain the picture, then it does not qualify.

3.) You cannot post a picture of a father and daughter and then write "child marriage in Saudi Arabia" to prove your belief that it exists in that country. In other words, try to be intellectual and use something you'd see in a newspaper or something. No pornography obviously, and please use your judgement.

4.) Religion is off limits as I can easily see this derailing the political nature of the thread.

5.) Commentary on others pictures is welcomed especially if you found it amusing, or if it hit a poignant truth for you.

I'll go first. The caption on this picture says "A picture is worth a thousand words"

This doesn't really feel like a perfectly neutral topic, given "rule" #3. And I can't really reconcile "they often in one image depict the emotions and thoughts of an entire group of people" with all the stuff you've been saying elsewhere about generalizations.

Also, I'm not quite sure what "respect others' right to post something they liked" means, but people are obviously allowed to dispute the implications of the cartoons, so I'm pretty sure this thread is going to lead to all sorts of arguments. Even if they didn't, all you'd end up with are people arguing by proxy with their cartoons.

All that said, I think even the cleverest of political cartoons are pretty damn glib and contain little to no insight about the issues they're trying to capture. Their primary value is that they make people who already hold the same position feel better.

Hmm. So how do I create a thread where people can post political cartoons that anyone can look at and appreciate regardless of your beliefs??

I really enjoy those cartoons, especially the trump ones.

Oh and yea, I don't mind a thread where people argued via their cartoons. That's be so much more...interesting.

Edit: Thank you for that edit, always fair .

I think that's almost an oxymoron: political cartoons get passed around and admired almost exclusively by people who agree with their message. That affirmation is the whole reason they exist. Take away the self-satisfaction of having one's beliefs reinforced, and there's very little left to appreciate.

I've enjoyed many political cartoons, but I don't think most of them contain any insight. They're just a clever repackaging of things the people enjoying them already believe.

I think it'd be a pretty illuminating exercise to have to explain what each one meant, and then try to imagine those explanations being used in an actual disagreement. Nearly every one would end up just being a flat, simplistic assertion.

Could be, though I think it would pretty quickly devolve into the exact same arguments. Up to you, though. Hope I'm wrong.

Haha. I genuinely laughed.
