I don't know what it is, but I love
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Not that this is even a surprise, since the film was a critical success. But for a film that isn't in my Top 10, I would flat out watch this every week if I could. Maybe it's the character comaraderie or the phenomenal production value and pacing... I don't know. It all just clicks into place.
The Thing is another one of those films that goes without saying. Of course it's incredible, but the fact that I don't usually do horror makes this unusual. I just love that raw, secluded feeling, and the paranoia aspect of your buddies being potential monstroids makes it all such an incredibly atmospheric experience. Perfect flick for when you've got the house to yourself.
I really don't know why
Zack and Miri Make a Porno resonates so well with me. I'm not the biggest follower of Kevin Smith and I'm usually only modestly satisfied with the Judd Apatow School of Filmmaking. But this one's got so much good feeling and energy, and the relationship between the two main characters is awesome. And I'm in love with Elizabeth Banks.
I tend to watch
Solaris a lot at night, when I'm chilling out and getting ready for bed. It's got that ambient quality that sets up perfectly the mystery and serenity of space, with not a lot of jarring sounds being allowed to poke through. The shots are deliberate and systematic, which is surprisingly nice. And the soundtrack is absolutely mesmerizing.
I think
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is now the absolute quintessential fantasy film. I grew up on Harryhausen and
Excalibur and
Willow, but this film has that believable, salt-of-the-earth, rooted-in-nature quality that puts it in a class all its own. The richness of New Zealand makes this an astoundingly beautiful film, much more so than the subsequent sequels, which aren't able to retain the first film's classic book-worn feel.
