I sure hope this kind of critical acclaim is the prelude to Julie Christie getting an Oscar nomination, if not another trophy. She has three nominations to date, for Darling, McCabe & Mrs. Miller and Afterglow, having won for her first nom way back in 1966 when she was only twenty-four-years-old. Now she's sixty-six, and Away from Her is quite possibly the very best work of her long career (certainly in the top three). It's a very subtle yet powerful performance, and she's mesmerizing every second she's on the screen. I hope The Academy doesn't overlook her.

Indeed...can't say I enjoyed the film too much though...

The Lives Of Others???

How does that one compete?

I don't know. Each body has their own bylaws of what qualifies each year. I guess The Lives of Others just missed the cutoff for the New York Critics Circle 2006 batch.

It's a great movie, so I don't care when it gets its due.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Hot Fuzz has yet to be mentioned thoughout these awards ! This is a mockery !
Well, it's British, it's a pastiche-style comedy, it has comedy acting rather than real acting and, let's face it, it's not a patch on Shaun of the Dead and that didn't win much, so are you really surprised?

Aside from it's amazing directing , cinemetography , and acting - i guess it really isn't that special : not to mention it's hillarious
If there are awards for action etc, then maybe. Special effects, technical awards, perhaps. But the acting was off the hammy comedy variety - that's not to say it didn't suit the film perfectly, but it won't win awards.

I must protest, Hot Fuzz was far better than SOTD...

I must protest, Hot Fuzz was far better than SOTD...
What, how did you reach this conclusion? Were you being waterboarded when you were watching Shawn of the Dead? Both fine movies, but Hot Fuzz had nothing on Peg & Frost's first big-screen outing.

Anyway, glad to see No End in Sight won out over Sicko. I'm fine with Moore but I'm glad they didn't just default to his film's higher takings. Both incredibly left-wing, though.

Why don't conservatives make documentaries? I guess they're too busy running the world to film it.

Is that some English expression? Anyway, I watched HF prior to SOTD, so maybe that could be a factor. I thought SOTD was watered down compared to HF, both in action and humor...:\

Though I do love shaun of the dead - my first viewing of hot fuzz : i didn't like it as much , but second , third , fourth , fifth - i kept watching hot fuzz again : that's when i figured

Hot Fuzz is actually better than Shaun of the Dead - shaun of the dead is still a
in my book : but Hot Fuzz is a visual spectacle , that tells it's own story - rather than a parody.
