Shutter Island, One Flew Over a Cookoo's Nest and The Shining would be my favorite mental illness movies.

i am from india , and can tell about bollywood movies . in bollywood there is a director called mahesh bhatt , who specialises in movies containing people with mental issues .

he was into a relationship with a famous bollywood star called parveen babi , and parveen was diagnosed with schizophrenia while he was in this relationship with her . her subsequent mental breakdown affected mahesh greatly , as he himself had mental health issues because his mother was mistress of his father and his father and father's wife used to treat mahesh's mother and mahesh not too well in his childhood .

later he made a movie called 'arth' ( meaning ) in which one of the two leading actresses ( played by smita patil ) has mental issues . the hero is into this extra marital relationship with her , neglecting his wife ( played by shabana azmi ) . the character of smita was based on parveen babi .

later again mahesh bhatt regurgitated the parveen babi story in a film aptly titled ' phir teri kahani yaad ayi ' ( i just remembered your story again ) . the leading actress was played by his daughter pooja bhatt and she was shown to be a schizophrenic who ultimately dies in the movie .

mahesh dealt with his own mental issues arising from his iilegitimate birth in the film 'janam' ( birth ) starring kumar gaurav . mahesh once gave an interview saying ' before others say it , i am shouting myself ( presumably from the rooftops ) " i am a bastard ,i am a bastard !! "

As someone who deals with mental illness, films about the subject tend to be hit and miss with me, largely depending on the tone and approach taken. There are some I really like/love (Donnie Darko, Take Shelter, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Robot and Frank etc) but then there are others that I can't warm to. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest for example I have no real fondness for because I find it just a bit close to the bone and tough, uncomfortable viewing.

My favourite film that deals with mental illness is definitely Lars and the Real Girl which I just love.

Just remembered a film I watched not to long ago

An Angel At My Table (1990, New Zealand)

I watched this a few months ago.. The author.. The special features with cool too. I liked the movie.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
A Woman Under The Influence
Taxi Driver
The Snake Pit
Can't believe I had to scroll this far down the thread to find mention of A Woman Under the Influence...that was the first movie that popped into my head when I saw the title of the thread because it takes a different tack than most movies on the subject...the patient doesn't really know that she's sick and her family is in denial about it, as most films on the subject are about what happens after the diagnosis.

Definitely i like mental illness movies and i saw
"Shutter Island"............

Spider 2002 (David Cronenberg) and Bug 2006 (William Friedkin) are two films that no one has named yet, but they definitely should be included in any list that claims to deal with mental illness. Furthermore are two great films overall.

Spider is one of my favorite Cronenberg films.

Has anyone mentioned Frailty yet? I found that to be quite a strong, effective film showing the impact mental illness in the family has upon children

Based on the truth.. and lies.
