Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

Tools

We've gone on holiday by mistake
WARNING: "plot" spoilers below
Another major complaint was no Lightsaber duel, suppose they didn't have 2 people to put against each other this time. Sort of one at the end and Rey/Ren vs guards but that wasn't really a duel. First time in 8 episodes no duel.

WARNING: "things I didn't like" spoilers below
Have they ever done a "previously on Ahch-To" like they did here? just felt weird to go back in time a bit after the opening scene
The casino bit of the film gave me the same feeling as the whole pod-racing bit in Menace,
but incredibly boring
Pantomime Peter Pan flying in space using the force?!?!?!
Finn dragging Rose back to the base, sorry but there's no effin way
Snoke..... haven't been this annoyed about a villain since Darth Maul

WARNING: "things I liked" spoilers below
really liked Driver's Kylo
Poe has really grown on me, looking forward to seeing the rest of his journey
The big middle finger about Rey's parents lol (which is probably a misdirect)
Snoke, Serkis is just great
Luke's first scene
Finn having me hook, line and sinker. really thought he was biting the big one
Hux may have been a bit Spaceballs-y in some scenes, but I was entertained

I've heard the Rumors about Reys parents and if was Rey I'd get a second Opinion or least check with any force ghost. But anyways whats wrong with Reys parents being who they were. Im certain its not as simple as how she learns it is.

Legend in my own mind
Largely loved it.

A few niggles but I can look beyond them

Boo-hoo. Go watch the prequels for that.

This is about developing the the characters while moving the story in a new direction.

I would like to take this opportunity to share my only complaints here, and not about any of problems I have with the film. Those will come later. It's regarding the consistent bitching from fans and critics about these extremely petty things.

WARNING: "MAJOR LAST JEDI SPOILERS" spoilers below
First off: F*ck Snoke. I'm glad he's dead. I hate to break it to the fanboys on Reddit, but this story isn't about Luke or Palpatine 2.0; It’s about KYLO and REY. Point blank. Not a combination of the 4 that are intertwined. Also, I wasn’t really dying to find out Snoke's Identity or Backstory. People are bitching like “uggh, how can I care about a character’s death If I don’t know anything about him?” He’s f**king dead. Too Bad. So Sad. Move on. And the reason why Darth Maul's death was aggravating is because the rest of the trilogy kept killing villain after villain with no real antagonist that wasn't lurking in the shadows. You had Maul kill Qui-Gon--Obi Wan's master... wouldn't that be a perfect motivator for Kenobi? Thus resulting in a great villain that'll last for the next 2 films? Now, we're already at the second film in this new trilogy. We don't need an extra villain (especially If he's freakin Discount Palpatine) just because he looks oh-so-spooky and you can endlessly speculate on "what his TRUE identity is."

BECAUSE BEN SOLO IS OUR VILLAIN YOU IDIOTS.

And there's a reason why the "Snoke Identity Confirmed became such a big meme that essentially pointed and laughed at the fans for their wacky theorizations. Granted, I'm a bit guilty of one myself. But you've never seen me talk to an overwhelming extent while OCDing my "theories” about and what not. Plus, your reactions to my “Theory” post essentially proved my aforementioned point of an oversaturation perpetrated by the fanbase. It honestly feels like you can’t speculate or have any fun unless these YouTube 'Click Baiting' fanboys analyze every spec of every little detail. It’s getting tiresome.

When I first learned of Rey’s parentage, I was shocked but didn’t know how to feel. Letting it sink in for a period of time, made my realize that this is utter brilliance. I’m aware Lucas wanted to keep the saga “Skywalker” oriented. But making her a complete nobody that’s essentially been a bastard her entire life, adds way more strength and complexity to her character that didn’t need a connection to the other Trilogies in order to achieve. Also, If this really feels like a letdown after such of big deal was made of Rey’s identity; then listen here: Rian Johnson took the proclaimed "MYSTERY BOX" that J.J Abrams threw into the Lucasfilm Hat… then Rian f**ked the box up It's the a**. Then he shoved it up Abram's a**, while he constitutionally f**ked Abrams in the a**, while the box and the hat was still up his a**. Then he went ahead and actually DID something with the characters, while moving the films in a very bold and new direction. (Whilst taking massive liberties with the seeds that J.J planted.) I highly applaud him for that.

All annoying rambling aside, this film (so far) feels like it’s garnered the reception that 'Empire' got in 1980. The same bitchy fans/critics who seem to be the vocal portion, will probably die down too as time goes by. In the future, I presume some might even put this film above the Original 'Star Wars' from 1977, but they won't be the majority. Empire will probably forever reign as the best in almost everyone’s eyes. However, I believe this film will eventually be recognized as the biggest game changer in the entire Star Wars Franchise. And for good reason.

No. This film is nothing compared to The Empire Strikes Back.
How is this a game changer? It's more like a filler episode that cuts off certain interesting potential storylines. Ultimately, it doesn't bring anything new or surprising to the table.

WARNING: "Last Jedi" spoilers below
I did like the relationship between Kylo and Rey that they tried to create, but even that part wasn't developed well enough.

It's an entertaining film with some spectacular setpieces, but plot-wise it's undoubtedly one of the lesser Star Wars films.

Boo-hoo. Go watch the prequels for that.

Which characters developed in interesting or surprising ways compared to The Force Awakens? Pretty much none, if you ask me.

Gonna try to say more later (crazy busy day couple of days coming up), but I mostly liked it. I was excited when I heard Rian Johnson was involved because I figured he'd bring a lot of new ideas to the film, and he definitely did, even if not all of them worked.

Oh, but in the meantime (very slight spoilers), I want to be on the record as coining the phrase ForceTime to describe those galaxy-spanning chats between Kylo and Rey.

I think its clear snoke was behind the rey and kylo long distance galaxy phone chat.
WARNING: "Last Jedi" spoilers below
Isn't there a moment after Snoke's death where they chat as well?

Have not seen it yet but lets me honest.....there are some people who will LOVE IT prior to even walking into the theater. Their mind is already made up because they are "fans".

I really enjoyed The Last Jedi (2017), but I was left a tad underwhelmed. Frankly, my biggest disappointment with The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi is John Williams' uninspired score. I enjoyed the humor of The Last Jedi, but I think it was in some places that undermined the dark tone of the film. Also, I don't know why the Resistance would get ride of the Y-Wings for those slow ass heavy bombers they had at the beginning of the movie.

I think if ever John Williams wanted to retire i think id like to see Hans Zimmer or the Composer who came up with the Avengers and the MCU theme do a Star Wars movie score

I think Kylo Ren is lying about who Reys parents are or it didnt happen the way Kylo Ren says it did. I think Kylo Ren has parents issues and wants Rey to believe him so tells her truth and lies like all True Sith do.
I think Reys parents could be Scavengers but good people who had too leave Rey because Snoke was after Rey and Force Children then. The Kylo and Rey connection I think is meant too in some way connect all the films together. No where does Lucas state that Anakin's mother did not have a sister or brother sold to another slaver. Rey could be a Skywalker just not from Anakin mom then Anakin.

Kenobi did say that Vader was more machine than man....

Maybe he had a girl in every space-port

I think Anakin is guiding Rey Under Yoda's more or less assigned mission. I think Hamill as Luke has to return but id be even more ok if Anakin or Yoda kinda has been guiding Rey in her training and Luke returns but tells Rey about her Family and he Knew who she was. Kinda like Obi Wans talk to Luke on Degabah

So after long time waiting as a die hard Star Wars fan, finally I went for this double feature event last night.

Obviously they showed The Force Awakens again on IMAX screen, it was the 2nd time viewing for me, and I still loved it.

Things I didn't like about The Force Awakens:
- Same as pointed out by a lot of people, the plot is lack of originality
- The part Finn didn't get killed by Kylo near the end was pretty BS

But overall, J.J. Abrams did well, IMHO.

Then it was the real deal of the night, The Last Jedi, until it only turned out to be overshadowed by The Force Awakens. After the movie, I honestly felt that had I not have watched The Force Awakens first, I might enjoy The Last Jedi better.

Things I didn't like about The Last Jedi:
- A lot of lazy writings, just like all other Disney Marvel productions. Example: that kicking the pipe and catching the bomb detonator scene. It was so uninspiring and freaking lazy. Also, that Leia superman scene, LOL
- Snoke Snoke Snoke, no spoiler, you know what I am talking about
- The side quest between Finn and Rose is pointless and BORING, and also how did that Asian girl land her role?
- The plot is just a mess. They planted a few twists, if you think hard, it is not that great, they did it just for a cheap surprise to the viewers. Having twists for the sake of having twists is a bad habit of a lot of directors nowadays (The blame should go to Nolan). They think that actually make them look smart and if you don't like the plot, you simply just don't 'get it'.
- Humor, I laughed here and there, but then had face palm for the most part.

Overall, congratulations to Rian Johnson, who successfully destroyed the Star Wars franchise.

I will put my rank of all the Star Wars movies so you can logically put your expectations at the right place before watching The Last Jedi:

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Rogue One

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

Yes, The Last Jedi is at the bottom with Attack of the Clones and no kidding The Phantom Menace is even better.
