Bolt's not in theaters yet.
There was a sneak peek Saturday I think.

I want to see Quantum of Solace so bad. I've heard it's good and I still haven't gotten to see it. Usually in films like these, I'm camping out in front of the theater (not really, but I want to )

I'm torn between my all consuming hate for Miley Sirus and my absolute love of that hamster dude. Me and my friend have been freaking out about him since the first time we saw a trailer for Bolt, and I think I might go see it just for him. However I don't know if I can bring myself to actually contribute to that totally undeserving wench's fortune.

Let's try to be broad-minded about this

that's me!

Synecdoche, New York
2008, Charlie Kaufman

Charlie Kaufman's latest cinematic puzzle, his directorial debut, is his most ambitious project to date, much like his central character's play within the play within the play within the film. The plot, as indescribable as it is, concerns a man named Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a middle-aged regional theatre director in Schenectady, NY. He has a wife (Catherine Keener) who is an aspiring painter and a young daughter. His career is unfulfilling and unchallenging and he is beginning to be overwhelmed by hypochondria and a general preoccupation with death. Just when things seem to have dead ended he is awarded the MacArthur Genius Grant, giving him a large sum of money to put together his magnum opus, a project which eventually overwhelms the scope of any known theatre production and realty itself.

This is an exceedingly clever and often hysterical hodgepodge of Existentialism, Theatre of the Absurd, homonyms, doubles, constructs, facades, pustules, desire, regret, memory, chaos and order...life and death. Amazing cast that also includes Samantha Morton, Emily Watson, Michelle Williams, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hope Davis and Tom Noonan. I'm sure I'll have to watch it many multiple times for the rest of my life to get everything that is crammed into this movie, but on first pass...wow. Intricate, funny, touching, indescribable and unforgettable.

Four Christmases

Saw this at a free screening so it wasn't a waste of money, but it was a waste of time. Really dull and completely uninspired, can't even be bothered to go through the formulaic motions with any kind of verve or sincerity. Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon play a San Francisco couple of three years who are happily committed to each other and their casual lifestyle of fun but protestations of marriage and kids. They are also both great at avoiding their families. Each Christmas rather than spend time with them they take an actual vacation, lying to their relatives about flying to far-flung locations to do charity work but really frolicking together in tropical locations. But this year a massive fog bank has canceled all flights out of the airport, and worse luck a local TV news feed catches them live, alerting their families that they aren't going anywhere, obliging them to go to four different houses (both sets of parents are divorced) on Christmas Day.

Know what happens? Some crazy hijinx and some personal revelations, leading the couple to reassess their lifestyle and commitment to each other. There are some good physical gags in the first house, with Vaughn's father (played by Robert Duvall), but after that the laughs are very few and very far between. I like Vince and he does his thing so he has some funny line readings and moments in spite of the tepid material, and Reese really doesn't have much to do. None of the many supporting players who have a scene or two are especially good either (Duvall, Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek, Jon Voight, Kristin Chenoweth, Dwight Yoakum, Jon Favreau, Tim McGraw). They aren't bad, but again are just given practically nothing to do. For a comedy it's not very funny, and for a drama it's about as deep as a bucket.

It lumbers along to its inevitable conclusion. Other than some nice Vince Vaughn moments here and there the only other nice thing to say about it is that it is blissfully short: less than 90 minutes! Unfortunately that's still about seventy minutes too long.
