Perhaps Japanese cinema's greatest decade and one where I still have much to see - particularly from Hollywood.

Perhaps Japanese cinema's greatest decade and one where I still have much to see - particularly from Hollywood.
The 1950's was not only in Japan but the greatest decade for film in the world because of the rise of TV (and manga in Japan) beginning around 1955 meant the decline of film, videogames also helped to bring the declined of film further in the 1980's and 1990's.

The 1950's were the last decade when films were still the main source of mass entertainment which meant more talent was invested there than in the next decades. That's Roger Ebert said that the best neighborhood of cinema city was the black and white one.

Sometimes I seriously wonder if you believe these comments are fact, or.... What? You're the only user who should have IMO programmed into their posts.

It's hard to rate musicals on the same list with non-musicals, so I've been able to narrow it down to a top ten if I list my favorite musicals from 1950 separately.

These are my top five favorite musicals from the 1950s:
Brigadoon (1954)
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Damn Yankees! (1958)
Oklahoma! (1955)
Annie Get Your Gun (1950)

These are my top five favorite non-musical movies from the 1950s:
12 Angry Men (1957)
An Affair to Remember (1957)
North By Northwest (1959)
Dial M for Murder (1954)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

This would be the second half of my top ten if the musicals were completely excluded from my list:
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
Rear Window (1954)
Vertigo (1958)
Harvey (1950)

These are some honorable mentions from the 1950s:
Non-Musicals:
High Noon (1952)
Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
Pillow Talk (1959)
Compulsion (1959)

Musicals:
Gigi (1958)
An American in Paris (1951)
The King and I (1956)

Disney Animated Movies:

Trouble with a capital "T"
I'm probably the only person extremely looking forward to the fifties countdown. I think it will be my favorite of them all.
Make that two people! I love 50s movies.

I thought I'd done my list already but clearly not:

1.12 Angry Men (1957)
2.Some Like It Hot (1959)
3.North by Northwest (1959)
4.The African Queen (1951)
5.High Society (1956)
6.Scrooge (1951)
7.Guys and Dolls (1955)
8.Roman Holiday (1952)
9. Funny Face (1957)
10.Vertigo (1958)
Guys and Dolls? Seriously? I love musicals and even I wouldn't consider that a top film of 1950's...I can think of a dozen musicals made during the 1950's that were better than Guys and Dolls.

I've always thought of The African Queen as a fun, entertaining, adventure film. And nothing more. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it is a solid addition to Huston's resume that I enjoy watching.
I've always thought The African Queen was overrated too...I saw it and enjoyed it but the movie is kind of slow and doesn't have a lot of re-watch appeal and the fact that Bogart stole the Lead Actor Oscar from Brando doesn't bode well for the movie in my mind either.

7. On the Waterfront (1954; Elia Kazan)
8. The Baron of Arizona (1950; Samuel Fuller)
9. Killer's Kiss (1955; Stanley Kubrick) - This might even be higher later on, underrated film.
10. North by Northwest (1959; Alfred Hitchcock)

Don't worry, I'm working on improving this list.
