Trouble with a capitial 'T'
I just got off the phone with my parents and they both really liked Jersey Boys. And they can be picky too, but they were very positive about the film.

Cricket I'm glad I watched it, I liked it enough to give it a
, which for me means an average OK film. If I had hated it I would have given it a
or even the dreaded
.

I'm just playing critic and commenting on what I see as flaws. Every single movie has flaws or things that could have been done better/different.

I thought well enough of Jersey Boys to give the DVD to my parents to watch. I'll have to see if they liked it or not. I do thank you! for mentioning the film...otherwise I would not have known about the mystery that is Joe Pesci
I really liked Jersey Boys...the guy who played Frankie Valli has a gorgeous voice, but his acting left a little to be desired. The guy who played Tommy De Vito was the best thing in the movie. I wrote a review of it on my thread.

Thanks I just read it, nicely written review. You covered a lot of important details about the production of the movie it's a good review and you seem to agree with my parents in liking the film a lot. GBG you should read Gideon's review.

BTW...I never knew this about Tommy who's one of the Four Seasons: "Joe Pesci, whose character name in Goodfellas was Tommy DeVito."

OMG! That's right. It must have been an homage done on Pesci's part (since they were friends) !
Hoping real life Tommy was no where near as bad as Pesci's Goodfellas' Tommy!

I can't help but wonder how this poor Tommy guy feels being portrayed as a hood, a slob, an out-of-control gambler, a loudmouth weirdo who blows his nose in towels, a cheapskate and having a psychotic mobster character named after him! (He's probably crying all the way to the bank!)

I'd give her a HA! and a HI-YA! Then I'd kick her.

I read Gideon's review a couple of weeks ago, and bumped the movie up a little bit in my watchlist, but I hadn't gotten to it yet when you guys started discussing it in here, and I dropped it down a little bit on my watchlist. Now I'm thinking about bumping it up again on my watchlist. (My watchlist is starting to feel like a roller coaster. )

I haven't seen The Changeling (1980). Post 1970 horror is not my thing, so I almost would say no, but I read about the film and it does sound intriguing and I hope it's more cerebral.

"A man staying at a secluded historical mansion finds himself being haunted by the presence of a spectre." and "The supporting cast is headed by Melvyn Douglas (in one of his last roles)"

So I will give it a watch Thanks! (my library has it too)
I hope you watch it soon. I loooove this movie, and I've watched it numerous times. It is a great horror movie, and it's my favorite type. No gore, just true suspense, a lot of surprises, and a very creepy feel to it. Then of course . . . George C. Scott!

Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986)

Director: Gene Saks
Writer: Neil Simon
Cast: Jonathan Silverman, Blythe Danner, Stacey Glick, Lisa Waltz,
Genre: Period Piece Comedy

Based on Neil Simon's life as a boy growing up in a poor Jewish family in Brighton Beach, New York. Originally wrote as a play by Simon and is 1 of 3 films in a series that chronicles his life. The other two are Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound. The film is set during the 1930s depression era which gives it a nostalgic feel and the period piece sets look authentic which adds to the nostalgia.

Eugene (Jonathan Silverman), a 15 year old teenager struggles with hardships, puberty and conflicts that arise from his many family members. The crowded household is shared by his widowed aunt (Judith Ivey) and her daughter, Eugene's cousin Nora (Lisa Waltz)...Eugene has a big crush on Nora.

Blyther Danner plays the strong willed bossy but caring mother. Her widowed sister however lacks confidences and is played by Judith Ivey.

One of the strong points of the film is how Eugene has a different relationship with each of his family members. The scenes with his older brother were reminiscent of a coming of age film. The way his mom (Blythe Danner) bossed him around and how he rebelled against it, was both funny and very well done. At the same time we get a more serious relationship between the mother and her widowed sister (Judith Ivey). Neil Simon knows how to write people who are 3 dimensional and believable.

I thought this film was funny in a realistic way and at the same time serious too. It dealt with real problems that families and teens face with a straight forward telling. It never crossed over into cheesy territory. All of the family members are well fleshed out, memorable characters. The dialogue sparkles with wit and wry humor done with a very humanistic and believable style.

This was a treat and I wish more films were made like this.

No gore...good! And I agree with you Geroge C. Scott rules. He made a really good Ebenezer Scrooge too.

I have the movie coming from my library...come to think of it libraries rule too.

Well Gideon and my parents say it's pretty good so there you go.

No, I never knew about the date time post thing. I hope I can remember it.

That's right. I posted it on my favorites thread, no time back. I do that with every movie I watch and post about in my thread.

Yep, I have that Christmas movie. I have a fair amount of his movies, actually.

I saw Brighton Beach Memoirs many years ago, so I don't remember a lot about it, but I remember liking it. I've always been a fan of Neil Simon, and I also like Jonathan Silverman, (although I used to confuse him with Matthew Broderick when I was younger). I'll have to dig out my DVD and re-watch this movie.

I haven't seen either of the two sequels, so if you get a chance to see them, I'd be very interested in reading your reviews of them.

Thanks to SilentVamp for recommending the film that I will review next
You're welcome.

I am seriously SO HAPPY that you enjoyed it SO much! I started to think that I was going to be the only one (along with a couple of members of my family) that really liked "Brighton Beach Memoirs". I seriously would love to start quoting the movie right now, but I will spare everyone that.

This was a treat and I wish more films were made like this.
You don't know how many times I say something like this after I see such a movie as "Brighton Beach Memoirs".

I also like Jonathan Silverman, (although I used to confuse him with Matthew Broderick when I was younger)
That is funny because Matthew Broderick originated Silverman's role on Broadway (and he starred in the movie sequel "Biloxi Blues").

I really like "Biloxi Blues", too (although I think "Brighton Beach" may be a little better), but I wasn't the biggest fan of "Broadway Bound", which is a shame. Maybe I should watch it again sometime to see if my opinion would change. There's an idea! I think sometime this winter I will make it a triple feature and watch all 3 in a row.

I knew that Matthew Broderick starred in a sequel to Brighton Beach Memoirs, but I didn't know the name of the movie, and I've never seen it.

I liked Matthew Broderick a lot when he was younger, but I haven't been much of a fan of some of his more recent movies. (Although I've heard that he's terrific on Broadway.)

I always think it is funny how he has created a new career for himself as a musical comedy star. Who ever would've thought that was going to happen?
