Controversial movies
Snuff 102 is actually on my watchlist
Very very difficult watch but well worth tracking down the director to discuss it with him, cricket. Nice, upfront guy.
I have a hard time with "controversial" movies because 9 times out of 10, they just seem to exist as shock treatment..treating what, I have no idea?
Take Lars Von Trier and even Michael Winterbottom when he went silly with "9 Songs". These are pornographic. I enjoy porn as a form of ..umm..enjoyment?...but mix in a weighty character driven story and I get lost and disinterested super fast.
Von Trier's brand of porn is equally unappealling because it uses beautiful juxtaposed scenes against the hardcore penetration montage.
Like, for instance, if I were watching Big with Elizabeth Perkins..that's far enough for me. If I wanted to see her drilled and spilled I'd do it myself. I can do it myself! Imagination. Not that I would. NO!!
Seriously, though. I prefer sex and controversy to be separate, and films and porn, as well. Once you open pandora's box, nothing is left but heartache, or, at its safest, an empty bottle of champagne and a hangover. No thanks.

If you want something a little less in your face, try good ol' Michael Haneke too. He's a bleak old bastard.

I was totally kidding. You knew that, right? "Drilled and spilled" didn't mean murder. I just read that back and it's nasty. Meant sexually sorted..in a vulgar PG-13 way.
I can vouch for you that you're a good guy.
I think he was kidding as well. LOL.

They haven't let me out the past few weekends and I'm foaming at the mouth for a little drill and spill action.

I watched a great controversial film about two months ago. Here's what I wrote about it in my Movie Log back then:
#54 - In the Realm of the Senses (1976) ~ April 14
This is a film, based on an actual event, about two deeply troubled people trying to find the ultimate happiness through their sexuality and the psychological games that go with it. It's directed by the revered Japanese director, Nagisa Ôshima. This is generally considered as his most (in)famous film, especially in the West, and it was also the first film I've watched of his.
I did not expect this film to be as radical as it was in its expressiveness, but putting that issue aside, I think it's a fairly good portrayal of obsessiveness and the reaching for a certain kind of pleasure that can never truly be found. The extreme explicitness is probably necessary in order to truly make the viewer experience the state of mind of these characters.
This is certainly not a film for everyone, but I personally found there to be a certain value to it. Nagisa Ôshima's philosophy about art is fascinating: "Nothing that is expressed is obscene. What is obscene is what is hidden." He certainly took that sentiment to heart.

I disagree. I think graphical images can perfectly coexist with a good story. They can even strengthen the story when they're used wisely and offer a relevant emotional addition to what's being told.
