Best Death Scene

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
The best death seen I ever saw was when Steve McQueen shot Karl Malden a bunch of times, in the knees, elbows etc., in the movie, Nevada Smith.
All Karl Malden could do, was to call McQueen, "Yellah. Kill me! Yer yellah!"

Old Rubber Nose is a tough S.O.B. He's alive and kickin' at 95! He was also born 18 years before McQueen and 12 years before Brando.

Welcome to the human race...
Duke in Repo Man.

The lights are growing dim Otto. I know a life of crime has led me to this sorry fate, and yet, I blame society. Society made me what I am.
The best part about that death is when Otto goes "You're gonna be OK", only to hear one last breath, then goes "...maybe not...".

Anyway, whenever I try to think of good death scenes, the first movie to pop into my head is always Battle Royale. There are several shocking deaths (both graphic and emotional), but if I had to pick one, it'd be Kuninobu's explosive necklace being detonated.

Boromir, brother of Faramir is killed in Fellowship of the Rings, but one of the Urauk-Hai (ORCS). He is shot several times with arrows, yet still fights. He is finally taken down and dies in Arragon's arms. He's played by Sean Bean.
Ah, Sean Bean! A name I recognize!

But did McQueen as Nevada Smith ever really kill Malden's character or just leave him crippled? In fact, did he really kill any of the guys he tracks down? Seems I recall the Arthur Kennedy character dies in the swamp, drowns or gets snake-bit or something of a more natural nature. I seem to recall a knife fight with Martin Landau, but my recollection is that his death is almost accidental, too, like he falls on a blade or something.

Here are a few that are memorable to me...

Thelma and Louise
Alien
Alien 3
Léon
Nosferatu
Jaws
Bonnie and Clyde
The Shining
The Crow
Return of the Jedi
The Crying Game

Funniest death scene I can remember was in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (the 1992 movie)....

In the movie CLICK
when Adam Sandler was about to die in the middle of the road around the heavy rain..(ALL wet) It was really a touching scene

Just as far as cool deaths go, All of the deaths in Saw. They're just cool.

WARNING: "Saving Private Ryan" spoilers below
But i would go with Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. He should have lived!

There is one very realistic death scene in Saving Pvt. Ryan, during the hand-to-hand combat between the German's and a couple of the Rangers. One Ranger has been shot (or otherwise injured) in the throat and literally chokes to death and drowns on his own blood. The surviving Ranger and German fight it out with knives until the Kraut finally wrestles him down and starts sliding the knife blade into his chest. The Ranger is begging, 'No...No...No!" in a low voice, while the squarehead whispers in German, "Shuuuu, sleep, sleep."

For me the saw sequel, It is very horrifying, can't imagine how he torture his captives....

I am half agony, half hope.
Watched Platoon yesterday, and I have to say, every time Elias comes out of the jungle and gets cut down by the Vietnamese as the helicopter circles above him, just kills me.

I must be one morbid mofo, because when I think of "best" death scenes I think of either funny ones or ultra-violent ones.

Amateur
had a scene of a man getting shot about 20 times while he staggered up a hill--all from point blank with the same pistol. Hal Hartley wanted to show people just how little he knew about making action movies, hence the title of the picture.

Jim Jarmusch also played against gunplay conventions in Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, when a mobster is killed and ever-so-gently slinks down into a very comfortable-looking office chair. Finally, with one last breath, he reclines.

But the death scene that always ties my brain in knots is the famously brutal shotgun to the head in the 1980 slasher, Maniac. The victim is also the special effects modeler, and for this scene alone he stood in for the killer as well. Thus you have a man shooting a model of himself which he in fact created. That must have been a very interesting feeling!

One of my favorites is when Mrs. Darcy dies watching Platoon.

But seriously, I agree that the scene is very affecting, and that image of Elias on his knees, arms raised, is one of the most memorable ones in all of cinema.

is thouroughly embarrassed of this old username.
The death of Mr. Baek in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Broken Dam's death in Noriko's Dinner Table. I like these two scenes because they are very emotionally charged scenes which are in already fantastic movies.

Welcome to the human race...
Two more I reckon are worth mentioning...

- The "disappearing pencil" scene in The Dark Knight. Honestly have not been so shocked and so amused so suddenly by one action.

- Also, a lesser known one is from Brother (a Takeshi Kitano film) where a thug is killed by having what I imagine is a pair of broken chopsticks rammed up his nose. Hard.

What did you think you were going to read here, Pal?
ummm considering the fact that there is no spoiler warning in the head line of the thread i did not expect to have any movie spoilt.

Well, considering the fact that it's obvious from the title that the thread is about characters dying. For a lot of movies a character's death is considered an important part of the movie's plot, whether at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end, or anywhere really. So it's reasonable to assume that death can be a plot spoiler.

Also, you know that Braveheart is based on a true story about 500 years ago, right? I think it's quite obvious that he'd be dead anyway.

so you wouldn't care if i spoilt every movie that was based on a true story, simply because the charicter would be dead sooner or later?
