Well, hello again!
Now I’m here with Keaton’s Palooka from Padukah. That’s possibly the hardest oh his “Educationals” ‘cause there’re 2 inarticulate characters there and furthermore they didn’t use the special microphones for distant shots at that time! So it’s rather difficult to understand what do the actors say when they’re rather far from the camera.
Well now on the characters. Mostly the camera is focused on the members of Diltz family, and their names are quite simple – they’re just Ma, Pa, Sis, Jim and Elmer. Note that Keaton’s character’s name is not Elmer – he’s Jim.
So let me start… The length of this film is only 20 mins, but still there are about 40 replies that are not quite clear to me.
OK, so – part one of the video.
1) 01:06 What does MA reply to the postal guy (after he says “how are you feeling”)?
2) 01:19 – 01:44 – the whole conversation between mother and daughter. Some sentences are quite clear to me, and I can get the whole idea but I want to be absolutely sure of what they say.
3) 02:03 – 2:21 The conversation between brothers starting with “Say, Jim…”
4) 04:10 – 4:33 Ma says something about the cost and then everything they say is not quite clear to me up to Sis’s words “They show up… Mum”
5) 5:20 – 5:52 Startin’ with Jim’s words “What’s the matter, Pa?” and the whole conversation up to Pa’s words: “Some of them fellas make a heap of money”
6) 06:54 Jim: “Elmer, you’ll have to lay down ……” Then Elmer: “What .., Pa?”
7) 7:20 Pa: “I’m going to see if Ma’s ……”
8) 7:29 Jim: “This is ……. thing …… Pa was telling us”.

1. 2:09 Ma: “……wrestlers ……hard work, Elmer”
2. 2:27 Ma: “You silly boys………..” – somethin’ like …are rough. I’m scared you get hurt”
3. 2:34 Pa: “…………… for. ……………………..make you a referee, Jim.”
4. 3:26 An announcer: “Get ready, hurry up, you ….. next. C’mon!”
5. 4:31-4:45 Referee’s words (they’re said from the distance and that’s why they’re not to clear). He starts with something like “ladies and gentlemen”. And what does he say next, about the corners?
6. 8:42 The announcer is dragging Ma towards the ropes. He says something. Is that possible to hear his words in that mess?
7. 8:53 Now the man (I suppose he’s a manager) says to the wrestler “Nevermind…..wrestle!” Right after that Jim says something to him. What does he say?
8. 9:03 Now Jim says something again.
9. 9:12 Now he addresses the wrestler.
10. 10:06 Ma’s words “……Ma again!”
