Original Plotlines

We all know hollywood has been exploiting the same old plotlines over and over again changing only a single variable in a hundred films, im looking for new movies to watch with original plotlines, things that i can watch for more than ten minutes without being able to tell you how the rest of the movie will proceed.

some of my favorite movies like this include

King of California
Wristcutters: A Love Story
Ink
Me You and Everyone we Know

I haven't heard of any of those films, but I looked up The King of California and saw some similarities to They Might be Giants and The Fisher King. It's hard to come up with something that is absolutely original.

i agree that theres little to no absolute originality left in cinema but at least we can try to stray from the same old things over and over again or at least attempt to portray the usual plotlines in a new light.

Same old puppeteer and his chimpanzee-loving girlfriend find portal into the consciousness of an Oscar-nominated actor behind the filing cabinet of an office on the 7½ floor until deposited on the side of the Jersey Turnpike thing. Then what? Tedious ol' bank robbery, car chase, spaceship, wedding, music video montage set to '80s pop song horsepucky, I expect. *YAWN*

As much as it seems like there's no creativity left, it really depends where you look. I'm one of the most caustic people when it comes to attacking the generities of a medium, but I do know that uniqueness does still exist....yes even in America. Therefore, I don't know how long of a list you want.

There are a lot of movies, new and old, that have interesting stories where the ending is not predictable, but it all depends on your taste.

and winter ill take as long of a list as your willing to type haha, ill watch anything and im interested in anything

Inception was pretty original... Toy Story, Being John Malkovich and the basic plotline of Fight Club can be called original.

Thanks a bunch, I actually havent seen many of the movies on your list but ill definitely check them all out.

Also this could turn into a good debate if anyone disagrees that a film is/isn't original

Dog Day Afternoon is about a bank robbery that has gone wrong and has been done lots of time, but it still has an unpredictable quality and certainly is the best film of its kind.

Yeah. Are you just asking, or are you implying that book adaptations aren't original?

Yes for the first, and yes/no for the second. I tried to avoid book adaptations in my list for the sake of being "pure" but I don't feel like being the police in this thread haha

I know some bad original movies.

book adaptations can be original as long as the plot is. When i created the thread i was mainly just talking about things that got me away from watching just another horror film or just another love story, etc. Just things that stand out in their genre.

The newest releases ive found to be like this are inception and its kind of a funny story.

You cant go wrong with Black Swan. It just had its wide release so you should be able to find it at a theater.
