Oscar winners that deserved it

Tools

Often there's been a lot of disappointment and criticism over the choices for the winner of an Oscar- whether it's disagreeing with the merit of the winner or the frustration that a more worthy candidate has been looked over.

So, which Oscars have been deservedly won? Not just for acting and best picture but all categories.

Yep, this won't get many replies, TGWHATL. Not that it isn't a good thread, just that there haven't been that many. Not of the 'major' awards, anyway.

What? There's been plenty!

I think the key to this thread is someone posts a film and then HK or some other hipster contrarian comes along and says why it isn't deserving.

Me and C&W talked about this at one point, but I am convinced that No Country For Old Men should have won Best Picture over There Will Be Blood.

Takers?

I would have voted for No Country for Old Men over There Will Be Blood, sure.

But the idea of a "deserved it" topic makes two separate categories for me. The first is, of the five (or now ten for Picture) actual nominees, do I agree that the best of those choices won the award? The second take on it would be in how many years do I think the "best" picture or performance or whatever of the year was even nominated much less actually named Best by the Academy?

Of the first order, being best of the nominees winning, in the Picture category I'd say for me it lines up once or twice a decade, which is just enough to keep it interesting. In the past forty Oscars I think No Country for Old Men, Million Dollar Baby, Schindler's List, Unforgiven, Rain Man, Amadeus and The Godfather were all the appropriate choices, and I don't have huge gripes with four or five of the others which would have been close strong seconds for me among the nominees. As for how often I find the Picture is of the second order, actually the best picture, that's much more rare, with Unforgiven and Amadeus being the only two in the past thirty years that I'd cite, for my personal taste.

But when it comes to The Academy Awards, it's like Eastwood's Will Munny growled in Unforgiven: "Deserve's got nuthin' to do with it?".

That's the real nub of it, isn't it? If it's deserved to win of that group? Then there'll be far more 'winners' to choose from.

Unforgiven was for me easily the best movie of it's year as well. Silence of the Lambs and Rain Man fall into that category for me too. Others such as Million Dollar Baby, A Beautiful Mind, and The Departed I believe were good choices in comparison to the nominees. And obviously older movies like Casablanca, The Bridge on the River Kwai and The Best Years of Our Lives were highly deserving, though some had very stiff competition.

A Beautiful Mind is an exceptional movie. I agree with you.

Denzel in Training Day, some people thought he was second choice to Russel Crowe but IMO I think he is a great actor the new Sidney Poitier

I've said this before, but being a huge Denzel fan I really don't think Training Day was his best. I'm glad he won best actor for it anyway.

I am not saying it his best performance but finnally he was recognised for his ability to act, and come on who didnt hate his character in that movie?

I am not saying [Training Day is] his best performance, but [finally] he was [recognized] for his ability to act...
That was Denzel's second Oscar. He won his first in 1990 for Glory.

"... And the Oscar for "Best Performance Of Samuel L. Jackson Playing A Character In A Film That, For Whatever Reason, Samuel L. Jackson Wasn't Cast In" is...... Denzel Washington for Training Day!"

Now Glory on the other hand, I believe that one was well deserved and probably his best supporting role.

Something that hasn't been talked about, I really think Dustin Hoffman was 100% deserving of the oscar that he was awarded for his performance in Rain Man. I really don't think that another actor could have pulled off a performance like that for that film.

I would say Hurt Locker was not better than Avatar and still this movie won more awards so even I criticize them...

I thought Tom Cruise deserved the award over Dustin Hoffman. His character development is what makes that film and gives it heart.
