Rambo V Story Details

Rambo 5 sounds like it’ll be more of a direct sequel to “First Blood” (1982) than any of the over-the-top sequels were. According to Aint it Cool News, the film will see the muscly Vet return to the misty greens of America’s Northwest – the same terrain portly Brian Dennehy hunted him down in in the original film.

The tentative title (it’ll change – the last “Rambo” went through about five different titles before Sly, and Lionsgate, decided on a keeper) for the new film is Rambo V : The Savage Hunt. In it, “….there is a U.S. Military installation that is doing experiments on elite soldiers as part of some sort of program where they're attempting to tap into that SAVAGERY that we have deeply embedded into us. The plan is create brilliantly instinctual killer soldiers that have no qualms about taking life. Sly brought up the ancient Immortals, which were cartoonishly glimpsed in 300. In reality, they were children trained from the time they were infants to kill”, says the site. “Well as happens with Government Experiments to create the perfect killer - it goes exceptionally well... and then exceptionally badly. And Rambo is brought in with a Black Ops squad ("Like in PREDATOR") to hunt, capture or kill this worse than Rambo killer.”

The film, which Stallone’s convinced (or intending to be) will be the last Rambo film, is in the early stages of development says the site.

Clash of the Titans First Look and B-Roll

During MTV's "Behind the Screen" special, the network debuted a first look at Warner Bros. Pictures' Clash of the Titans in the form of a set visit as well as B-Roll footage. You can watch both clips here.

Opening in theaters on March 26, 2010, the Louis Leterrier-directed action-adventure stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Danny Huston, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen, Jason Flemyng, Alexa Davalos, Izabella Miko, Nicholas Hoult and Pete Postlethwaite.

In the film, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

Stallone Clears Up Rambo 5 Confusion

Yesterday, had the breaking news for the next installment of the Rambo franchise, which centered on the story of Rambo 5. From what we heard, the idea for the fifth installment seemed a little odd and it resulted in some confusion and mixed reaction. This provoked Sylvester Stallone himself to quickly address the confusion and explain himself what the film’s story is (and is not) about.

Sly read the reader feedback to the news on several sites that over-emphasized the science-fiction aspects of the story for Rambo V, so he left a message with Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News, who first broke the news, to clear up the details.

Read on for what Sly’s explanation of Rambo V: The Savage Hunt

In the voice mail, Stallone first emphasized that the story is not about him fighting a group super soldiers like in Universal Soldier, but instead, it’s about him and a team brought in to fight a “savage beast” of a man - A man that represents an “amalgamation of fury and intelligence.” (The result of conditioning people from when they were kids onward to make them fearless, intelligent and cunning warriors, a la 300)

This villain’s ability to survive is rivaled only by that of Rambo and that’s what makes the movie interesting. The doctors at this facility couldn’t control this guy’s mind and he became a “savage killing machine.” Hence, the title.

He also clarified again that it’s not Rambo battling a squad of super soldiers but instead that it’s like you worst nightmare, “battling your primitive self.”

Head over to AICN to hear the entire message Sly left.

Sly’s idea of this savage beast-like character adds a great element to the nature of the film. Instead of a focus on physical ability and raw killing talent, we’ll be seeing heavy emphasis on the strategic and tactical cunning of John Rambo and this villain, as one hunts the other.

Weinsteins Pushing for Another Childen of the Corn

Variety reports that the studio have signed on Ehren Kruger (The Ring, The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) to once again adapt the short story by Stephen King pertaining to a little town whose children end up killing its adults.

We felt the New World film was a missed opportunity," Weinstein tells Variety. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it, and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you're re-envisioning a project, but a lot of the time they're just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story."

Patrick Stewart Wants To Make More X Men Movies

At a Dragon Con in Atlanta on Saturday, Patrick Stewart answered questions on whether we would be seeing him in future X movies, or maybe even in the reinvented Star Trek movie series.

As we know, Stewart recently appeared as a younger Xavier in X Men Origins : Wolverine but he seems to be interested in appearing in future mutant centric movies in the future too. While working on an adaptation of Waiting For Godot with Ian McKellen, he says the two of them agreed that they would love to further explore the relationship between Magneto and Xavier.

Asked about Star Trek he said he thought the new movie was "terrific", but that he did not see a large role for Jean Luc Picard to play in the movies rebooted timeline. He did say he would do a cameo in a future movie.

Ridley Scott Alien prequel has official title and first teaser posters?

Be mindful of the questionmark...

Den of Geek received these and were advised that they are 'week 42' teasers for the Ridley Scott Alien prequel scheduled for 2011. The prequel story to the 1979 blockbuster has been touted around the net as Alien: Origins and Alien Origins, but the latter seems to have won out if you can believe these.

Note that one of the alleged teasers employs both the headline fonts used in the original movie and in James Cameron's 1986 sequel Aliens.

It was a sparse communication, so take it with a pinch of salt - could be the backdrop to a current round of Fox meetings or just a bit of fan-art...

Akira Movie Not Quite Dead?

Hollywood has been fumbling around with turning the popular, cyber-punk anime film Akira into a live action movie for years now. More recently Leonardo DiCaprio was rumored to be involved in getting an Akira movie done. But as of this June word was that Akira is “dead as a doornail.” Not so fast!

Collider says those rumors of Akira’s demise may have been premature. There’s still life in this anime goes Hollywood story. They claim to have sources close to screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, probably best known as the writers behind Children of Men. Word is they’ve been quietly working on an Akira script and now they’ve finished and are about to turn the thing in.

The question is, once they turn it in, is anyone still interested? Collider insists that they are and what’s more, it’s still a priority for Warner Bros.

Charlie Sheen back for Wall Street 2

Speaking to The New York Times about his upcoming “Wall Street” sequel, director Oliver Stone confirms that Charlie Sheen will be back to play Bud Fox in the flick – if even fleetingly. Sheen will apparently make a cameo appearance in the sequel – set to lens this week in New York – reprising his role from the 1987 hit.

It seems Josh Brolin is also now a lock for the film. Said to have been in talks for the past month, Stone has confirmed the No Country for Old Men star is onboard to play an evil investment banker in the film. Others making small appearances in the film include Nouriel Roubini, a New York University economics professor and chairman of a consulting firm, and Jim Cramer, the hyperkinetic host of “Mad Money” on CNBC.

Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Frank Langella and Carey Mulligan also star in the film.

A-Team finds it's B.A

UFC fighter Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson was rumoured to be up for the role of B.A Baracus in Joe Carnahan’s A-Team movie a couple of weeks ago – but the reports were speedily dismissed by the sportsman’s peeps.

Today however The Vancouver Sun reports that Jackson has indeed won the much-coveted gig (everyone from Ice Cube to Tyrese Gibson was said to be in the running at one time or another), suggesting he was in town as recent as last week prepping for the role made famous by Mr T in the 80s classic.

Says the outlet, ‘’The Sun has learned Rampage was in Vancouver on August 19 to discuss the role with producers and arrived in town Friday to prepare for filming.’’

If indeed true (and sounds like it is), Jackson joins Liam Neeson (Hannibal Smith) and Bradley Cooper (‘Faceman’) for the Twentieth Century Fox flick. It hasn’t been announced who’s playing Howling Mad Murdock yet.

'Resident Evil' Franchise is Getting Rebooted

While Sony Screen Gems is prepping for Resident Evil 4: Afterlife, Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively (and confirmed) that the studio is already looking forward to the fifth film. While Milla Jovovich is confirmed for Afterlife, it's got to be getting expensive and (increasingly) difficult to keep her onboard. Instead of moving forward with the ongoing story, the studio is planning a quasi-reboot, which is tentatively titled Resident Evil Begins. While it's a long, long, long way off, the idea is to redo the story of a special military unit who fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.

In the meantime, Resident Evil: Afterlife, the 3D sequel is slated to arrive in theaters August 27, 2010.

Warner Bros. ‘Oz’ Project Not So Twisted After All

After the rumor about Fanning surfaced, McFarlane (always the hype man) spoke up about what his vision for the film was, comparing Dorothy’s odyssey through Oz to Ellen Ripley’s nightmarish experience in Alien. In recent weeks McFarlane talked to Empire about the film (which he is only loosely associated with), where he claimed that there were some squeaky-clean weaknesses in the Oz script that needed some dirtying.

Well, AICN touched base with screenwriter Josh Olson (A History of Violence), who had a few words to say about Mr. McFarlane, and how the Warner Bros. Oz film is actually progressing.

This particular Oz film has been in development over at Warner Bros. for about two years now. According to Olson, the only connection Todd McFarlane has to the project is that he was the one to open the door for an Oz sequel at Warner Bros., via his toyline. And…that’s where it ends. Olson claims that once WB was open to the concept of another Oz film, he stepped through that door with a concept and pitch that were all his own. Oh, and Dakota Fanning starring as Dorothy is strictly a rumor.

Check out some excerpts from AICN’s exclusive memo from Olson:

Just to clarify - the Oz project I wrote wasn’t “twisted” in any way. McFarlane’s involvement with the project and the fact that his line of toys live up to that epithet has led to a lot of confusion in the last couple years. The pitch I sold to Warners was entirely my own, based on events in several of the L. Frank Baum books, combined with a story of my own creation…If you want to think of it in terms of what’s out there, I was going for a Harry Potter tonality…

But for the record, the project we sold Warners on was in no way based on the Twisted Land of Oz figures. There was no bondage Dorothy, and no gigantic Toto monster. I’ve never met Todd, never heard his take, and we had one brief telephone conversation after I sold the pitch in which no details of the project were discussed. To be honest, I don’t even know if he’s read my script.

However, if we’re not going to get the twisted freaks of McFarlane’s Oz, what can we expect? According to Olson:

Mine is more of a sequel that was - or was at least intended to be - a return to the magical land of Oz that would work well for both fans of the MGM classic, and fans of Baum’s amazing books.

Tolkien Trust and New Line settle Lord of the Rings lawsuit

According to TheOneRing.net The Tolkien Trust, New Line Cinema, and HarperCollins Publishers have resolved the lawsuit relating to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The lawsuit was filled against New Line last year as The Tolkien Trust wanted their share of the profits. Everyone from director Peter Jackson to extras have sued New Line in the past. I guess that’s what happens when films make billions.

Commenting on the settlement, Christopher Tolkien said: “The Trustees regret that legal action was necessary, but are glad that this dispute has been settled on satisfactory terms that will allow the Tolkien Trust properly to pursue its charitable objectives. The Trustees acknowledge that New Line may now proceed with its proposed films of ‘The Hobbit.’”

Warner Bros.’ President & Chief Operating Officer Alan Horn said: “We deeply value the contributions of the Tolkien novels to the success of our films and are pleased to have put this litigation behind us. We all look forward to a mutually productive and beneficial relationship in the future.”
Now everything is sorted out The Hobbit can continue as normal. If the settlement dragged out or a deal wasn’t reached then it could have affected production on the upcoming Hobbit films. Thankfully filming can now start next March as originally planned.

Nic Cage Is Out Of The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet just can’t catch a break. The film’s production has been plagued with delays and disappointments for years now, but last week Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet started filming and it seemed as if all of that was finally behind them. And now there’s this: Nic Cage quits.

Cage was on board to play the movie’s villain but The Hollywood Reporter says he never actually signed an agreement with Columbia Pictures. Now they’ve given up on trying to sign him and Nic is off to do something else, leaving director Michel Gondry to find a new dastardly evil doer for Seth Rogen to battle.

Though the movie’s been shooting in Los Angeles since last week nothing with Cage was filmed since, of course, he hadn’t signed on the dotted line yet. Presumably they’ll keep filming and save the movie’s bad guy moments until they actually have a bad guy to put in front of the camera.

Alex Garland completes Judge Dredd screenplay?

Rewind, for a minute, back to last Christmas. That's when we first learned that the long-mooted plans to have another stab at bringing Judge Dredd back to the big screen were moving ahead. Dredd, of course, was the subject of a debatable 1995 movie, starring Sylvester Stallone and directed by Danny Cannon (now best known for lots of CSI episodes).

For a long time, it was assumed that the commercial and critical reaction to the Dredd movie had killed the chances of Ol' Stoney Face returning to the big screen. But last December, it was announced on the 2000AD forums that Rebellion and 2000AD were teaming up with Danny Boyle's DNA Films (who, in turn, is covered by a deal with Fox Searchlight) to give Dredd a second shot at cinematic stardom.

As is usually the drill, of course, things then went quiet. That was until comics artist Jock dropped a small single comment on his Twitter feed:

"working through script visuals for JUDGE DREDD movie. Alex Garland writes a great script."
Alex Garland is a long time Danny Boyle collaborator, of course, ever since the director brought The Beach to the big screen in 2000. Garland has since gone on to write the screenplays of both Sunshine and 28 Days Later for Boyle. If the project, however, is at some form of visualisation stage, it does open up questions as to how close Judge Dredd is to finding a director. Could Boyle himself be tempted?

Slashfilm, incidentally, has some concept art from Jock that emerged earlier this year for the new Dredd movie. You can find its post here. The current plan is for the Judge Dredd movie to be in cinemas for 2012, but we wouldn't expect further details on it for a while yet.
